In D/P times this set was the ultimate and one of the best leads in the game. Hypnosis to be used on things that you are faster than and take them out of action, an instance where this works is against Bronzong which you can put to sleep then proceed to shadow ball and kill. Focus Blast for Tyrnanitar, Heatran, and Normal types. Thunderbolt for Skarm, Gyara and the like and Shadow Ball for stab and is used as your main form of attack.

| Levitate | Timid | leftovers / life orb / expert belt | 4 | 0 | 0 | 252 | 0 | 252 | |
While initially looking similar to the first set it is completely different thanks to the inclusion of substitute. Sleep the opponent, sub up and attack.. they wake up and break your sub so you put them back to sleep and repeat the process till slow bulky walls are taken care of.

Again this set is similar however using Focus Punch over Focus Blast entirely to take out that annoying Blissey or Snorlax attempting to get in your way. You play it in exactly the same way as the previous set however the EVs used are different and enable a 2HKO on Blissey meaning that it can no longer wall you.

| Levitate | Timid | choice scarf / choice specs | 4 | 0 | 0 | 252 | 0 | 252 | |
The choice scarf variant works as a great revenge killer outspeeding that annoying Deoxys-e or Scarftran. Since it will outspeed practically anything Destiny Bond may be used allowing you to take down any pokemon that you may be unable to handle however Hidden Power shouldn’t be overlooked thanks to its ability to OHKO Salamence and outspeed it if you allow it to get in a Dragon Dance. Choice Specs isn’t as useful as a Scarf but it will allow Gengar to dish out major damage and kill many pokemon on the switch.

Platinum gave Gengar a great move in Trick which allows it to render walls almost completely useless. Tricking a choice scarf onto something such as Blissey means that it is gonna have a hard time being of much use for the rest of the match. You may also choose not to use Trick and continue to play with your own choice scarf gengar.

This EV spread gives Gengar enough attack to guarantee a OHKO on a Blissey when gengar decides to explode in its face. All the lost sp attack is made up for with life orb. Shadow ball is for STAB (obviously) and T bolt is for Gyarados, Skarm and all of out electric weak OU friends. Anything that cant be handled by Gengar can either be put to sleep, or crippled with burn, whichever you prefer. when Gengars job is done, ITS EXPLODIN´ TIME!

Use as your starter and pray that they have Weavile. Counter it and then Destiny Bond the next guy. Takes down one to two guys if your opponent has an offensive starter.Hypnosis + Sucker Punch has it´s merits as well, especially vs. a Faster Pokemon (i.e. Weavile) that would be carrying a Focus Sash...
Basically, you Counter KO a Pokemon. If it hung on with Focus Sash, you finish it off with Sucker Punch.Hypnosis the next Pokemon.Explode on the Switched Pokemon.

The EVs allow the user to get the Petaya boost after the third sub. This works better in some ways because it gives the opponent the illusion that you are subbing down for the boost, when in fact you are doing it so Gengar is guaranteed to be KOed after D-bond. If you want to use a regular Petaya set, replace Destiny Bond with Focus Blast or HP Ice.

Other OptionsTwo other special moves that gengar has access to are Sludge Bomb and Energy Ball which can hit grass types and Swampert respectively. However with the given movesets these pokemon can be handled easily enough.
Usual CountersBlissey can wall all sets bar the Sub Punch, and Bronzong and Jirachi can counter to some extent however may have trouble thanks to hypnosis. All versions apart from choice scarf can be countered by Heatran thanks to his ghost resistance.
OpinionGengar is one of if not the best special sweeper out there. He is extremely versatile and can provide good coverage hitting the majority of pokemon for at least neutral damage. The accuracy drop of hypnosis hurt Gengar slightly but it is able to make up for this thanks to substitute.
