Gen 4: Overview

5 Sets have Experimental/Statistics Data, which includes detailed information and calculations on countering threats you may encounter!

Ability Nature Item HP Atk. Def. SpAtk. SpDef. Speed
Levitate Timid focus sash / wide lens / life orb 4 0 0 252 0 252
This purpose of this set is for Gengar to use its already great Speed and SpAtk to take advantage in sweeping.

Experiment #1 (Speed)

Gengar´s minimum Speed is 256. Gengar´s maximum speed without speed nature is 319. Gengar´s max Speed is 350.

Pokemon that Gengar is able to out speed with 350 Speed and NOT 319:
- Gengar (Speed Tie)
- Latias (Speed Tie)
- Infernape (w/ 347)
- Scarf Machamp (w/ 344)
- Celebi, Flygon, Jirachi, Salamence, Zapdos (w/ 329)

From the above statistics we can see that Gengar needs Max Speed in order to out speed many of its threats.

Experiment #2 (SpAtk)

- Max SpAtk + LO + Focus Blast does 112.9% - 133.7% to Tyranitars with 252 HP EVs.
- Max SpAtk + LO + Shadow Ball does 69.2% - 81.6% to standard Mix/DD Salamences.
- Max SpAtk + LO + Shadow Ball does 89.4% - 106% to standard Latias´. 100% OHKO with SR up.
- Max SpAtk + LO + Shadow Ball does 92.8% - 109.2% to Rest Talk Rotom-A. 100% OHKO with SR up.
- Max SpAtk + LO + Shadow Ball does 51.1% - 59.9% to standard Metagross´. 100% 2HKO.
- Max SpAtk + LO + Shadow Ball does 85.3% - 100.7% to standard Infernapes.
- 0 EV Atk Explosion does 77.2% - 91% to Bold Blisseys.

From the above statistics we can see that this Gengar needs Max SpAtk in order to OHKO and 2HKO many threats with SR up. The rest of it´s EVs will go to Atk for Explosion power.

=======================

From the statistics above we can conclude the following spreads to be ideal for Standard Gengar:

#1 Gengar @ Life Orb + Timid + 4 Atk / 252 SpAtk / 252 Speed

======================

In D/P times this set was the ultimate and one of the best leads in the game. Hypnosis to be used on things that you are faster than and take them out of action, an instance where this works is against Bronzong which you can put to sleep then proceed to shadow ball and kill. Focus Blast for Tyrnanitar, Heatran, and Normal types. Thunderbolt for Skarm, Gyara and the like and Shadow Ball for stab and is used as your main form of attack.

Ability Nature Item HP Atk. Def. SpAtk. SpDef. Speed
Levitate Timid leftovers / life orb / expert belt 4 0 0 252 0 252
This purpose of this set is for Gengar to Substitute on the opponent and pose a great threat with its all special moves that deal heavy damage to any opposing Pokemon.

While it will need Max SpAtk in order to defeat many threats with SR up.

=======================

From the statistics above we can conclude the following spreads to be ideal for Special Sub Gengar:

#1 Gengar @ Leftovers + Timid + 4 HP / 252 SpAtk / 252 Speed

======================

While initially looking similar to the first set it is completely different thanks to the inclusion of substitute. Sleep the opponent, sub up and attack.. they wake up and break your sub so you put them back to sleep and repeat the process till slow bulky walls are taken care of.

Ability Nature Item HP Atk. Def. SpAtk. SpDef. Speed
Levitate Hasty leftovers / life orb / expert belt 0 64 0 192 0 252
This purpose of this set is for Gengar to Substitute on the opponent and pose a great threat with its all mixed moves that deal heavy damage to any opposing Pokemon. This set is great for destroying walls.

Gengar wants to be Hasty Nature so it doesn´t decrease it´s Atk stats for its physical moves. While it doesn´t want to decrease its great SpDef stat as it has a very low Def stat (which is why Gengar doesn´t have much use of it).

Experiment #2 (Attack + SpAtk)

- Gengar needs 112 Atk EVs in order to 2HKO Bold Blissey with Focus Punch.
- HP Fire will always OHKO CB Scizors.
- Gengar needs 36 Atk EVs in order to OHKO Tyranitars with 252 HP EVs with Focus Punch and SR up.
- Gengar needs 168 SpAtk EVs in order to 2HKO standard Mix/DD Salamences.

=======================

From the statistics above we can conclude the following spreads to be ideal for SubPunch Gengar:

#1 Gengar @ Leftovers + Hasty + 112 Atk / 144 SpAtk / 252 Speed

======================

Again this set is similar however using Focus Punch over Focus Blast entirely to take out that annoying Blissey or Snorlax attempting to get in your way. You play it in exactly the same way as the previous set however the EVs used are different and enable a 2HKO on Blissey meaning that it can no longer wall you.

Ability Nature Item HP Atk. Def. SpAtk. SpDef. Speed
Levitate Timid choice scarf / choice specs 4 0 0 252 0 252
This purpose of this set is for Gengar to use its already great Speed and SpAtk to take advantage in sweeping. With the addition of greater Speed with Choice Scarf or greater power with Choice Specs

Experiment #1 (Speed)

Gengar´s minimum Speed is 256 (384 with Choice Scarf). Gengar´s maximum speed without speed nature is 319 (478 with Choice Scarf). Gengar´s max Speed is 350 (525 with Choice Scarf).

Pokemon that Gengar is able to out speed with 525 Speed and NOT 478:
- Scarf Gengar (Speed Tie)
- Scarf Latias (Speed Tie)
- Scarf Flygon (w/ 493)
- +1 DD Salamence (w/ 493)
- Scarf Jirachi (w/ 493)

Pokemon that Gengar is able to out speed with 350 Speed and NOT 319:
- Gengar (Speed Tie)
- Latias (Speed Tie)
- Infernape (w/ 347)
- Scarf Machamp (w/ 344)
- Celebi, Flygon, Jirachi, Salamence, Zapdos (w/ 329)

From the above statistics we can see that Gengar needs Max Speed in order to out speed many of its threats. Both Choice Specs Gengar and Choice Scarf Gengar want Max SpAtk in order to deal the maximum amount of damage possible to its threats. Defensive EVs are not necessary as Gengar has very weak defenses.

=======================

From the statistics above we can conclude the following spreads to be ideal for Choice Gengar:

#1 Gengar @ Choice Scarf/Choice Specs + Timid + 4 HP / 252 SpAtk / 252 Speed

======================

The choice scarf variant works as a great revenge killer outspeeding that annoying Deoxys-e or Scarftran. Since it will outspeed practically anything Destiny Bond may be used allowing you to take down any pokemon that you may be unable to handle however Hidden Power shouldn’t be overlooked thanks to its ability to OHKO Salamence and outspeed it if you allow it to get in a Dragon Dance. Choice Specs isn’t as useful as a Scarf but it will allow Gengar to dish out major damage and kill many pokemon on the switch.

Ability Nature Item HP Atk. Def. SpAtk. SpDef. Speed
Levitate Timid choice scarf / choice specs / toxic orb 4 0 0 252 0 252
There are no current set statistics analysed

Platinum gave Gengar a great move in Trick which allows it to render walls almost completely useless. Tricking a choice scarf onto something such as Blissey means that it is gonna have a hard time being of much use for the rest of the match. You may also choose not to use Trick and continue to play with your own choice scarf gengar.

Ability Nature Item HP Atk. Def. SpAtk. SpDef. Speed
Levitate Hasty life orb 0 188 0 70 0 252
There are no current set statistics analysed

This EV spread gives Gengar enough attack to guarantee a OHKO on a Blissey when gengar decides to explode in its face. All the lost sp attack is made up for with life orb. Shadow ball is for STAB (obviously) and T bolt is for Gyarados, Skarm and all of out electric weak OU friends. Anything that cant be handled by Gengar can either be put to sleep, or crippled with burn, whichever you prefer. when Gengars job is done, ITS EXPLODIN´ TIME!

Ability Nature Item HP Atk. Def. SpAtk. SpDef. Speed
Levitate Hasty / Naive focus sash 4 0 0 252 0 252

Use as your starter and pray that they have Weavile. Counter it and then Destiny Bond the next guy. Takes down one to two guys if your opponent has an offensive starter.Hypnosis + Sucker Punch has it´s merits as well, especially vs. a Faster Pokemon (i.e. Weavile) that would be carrying a Focus Sash...

Basically, you Counter KO a Pokemon. If it hung on with Focus Sash, you finish it off with Sucker Punch.Hypnosis the next Pokemon.Explode on the Switched Pokemon.

Ability Nature Item HP Atk. Def. SpAtk. SpDef. Speed
Levitate Timid petaya berry 12 0 0 244 0 252
There are no current set statistics analysed

The EVs allow the user to get the Petaya boost after the third sub. This works better in some ways because it gives the opponent the illusion that you are subbing down for the boost, when in fact you are doing it so Gengar is guaranteed to be KOed after D-bond. If you want to use a regular Petaya set, replace Destiny Bond with Focus Blast or HP Ice.

Most Used Set

none

Other Options

Two other special moves that gengar has access to are Sludge Bomb and Energy Ball which can hit grass types and Swampert respectively. However with the given movesets these pokemon can be handled easily enough.

Usual Counters

Blissey can wall all sets bar the Sub Punch, and Bronzong and Jirachi can counter to some extent however may have trouble thanks to hypnosis. All versions apart from choice scarf can be countered by Heatran thanks to his ghost resistance.

Opinion

Gengar is one of if not the best special sweeper out there. He is extremely versatile and can provide good coverage hitting the majority of pokemon for at least neutral damage. The accuracy drop of hypnosis hurt Gengar slightly but it is able to make up for this thanks to substitute.
