Navigate Generation ⇓

This article gives you ideas of how to use Manaphy in battle in the Pokémon Black, Pokémon White and Pokemon B2W2 Games. It lists popular movesets used by competitive battlers, as well as a description on how to use each set to help you understand why the moves were chosen. These popular sets are usually the best to use in battle and so reading this guide will help you in your team building.

Gen 4: Overview

Manaphy will always be used on a Rain team, whether it is offensive or defensive. Kyogre is a extremely common teammate because its Drizzle ability, which summons permanent rain.

This set shows why you would use Manaphy instead of something like Mewtwo. In the rain, Manaphy is a fearsome foe. Many dangerous setup sweepers can be stopped with status conditions. Not Manaphy; it just laughs as it gets a free Tail Glow, absorbs a Toxic, and heals it off with Hydration at the end of the turn. Rest works in a similar fashion. When Manaphy´s HP dips to low levels, just take a brief snooze and wake up to fight another day. Tail Glow allows you to capitalize on this longevity by quickly boosting Manaphy´s Special Attack to astronomical levels.

Surf is self-explanatory, while the last slot gives Manaphy some supplementary type coverage. Although Water/Ice and Water/Grass look easily walled at first, fear not. Surf does ridiculous amounts of damage after just one Tail Glow. A +2 Surf will 2HKO Rayquaza, Kyogre, and Soul Dew Latios after factoring in STAB, Life Orb, and Rain (for the latter two). Speaking of Life Orb, the power-boosting item should be used since Manaphy needs the extra power. The 10% recoil isn´t that bad since it can easily be Rested off. However, Leftovers can be used to make Manaphy more bulky.

Manaphy is a bulky pokemon, and is able to use this to its advantage in battle. In the Uber metagame, Manaphy can therefore be used as a tank, taking hits from pokemon that are unable to threaten it. Once achieved, you can then setup calm mind to increase both special attack and special defense. After setup, you are then able to sweep the opponents team with either Ice Beam, Surf or Grassknot. Rest is a good option if you are affected by paralysis or poison, and is also a good way to annoy your opponent when they thought they knocked you out.

Thanks to Manaphy´s impressive defense base stat, it is able to take physical hits well such as an attack from Garchomp´s outrage. Thanks to icebeam, you´re able to counter these offensive dragon types, including Giratina, Salamence or Dragonite. Another option includes the use of Grassknot to cover Kyogre teams, as grassknot together with Manaphy´s excellent special attack stat will deal a 2HKO, and a 1HKO with 2 calm minds.

This set can be extremely useful and annoying for your opponent. The use of Toxic can destroy any walls your opponent may setup, and rest can be used to recharge after taking hits and after watching their health decrease from intoxication. Again, Icebeam can be useful to kill off threats such as Rayquaza or Garchomp, or you can use Grassknot to deal serious damage to the common Ubers Groudon or Kyogre.

If you need to support your team, the use of Light screen or reflect can prove useful instead of rest. Surf is an important move, as when used it not only provides a powerful 100 power, but together with STAB and a potential super effective hit, can destroy your opponent.

Moreovre, the effort values in this set further enhance the defensive base stats of manaphy. Thunder from Kyogre cannoy OHKO Manaphy, thanks to the 108 Evs in Special Defense.

Most Used Set

Manaphy´s most common set is the Tail Glow set. In Ubers, the only things that separate Manaphy from stronger and faster special sweepers like Mewtwo are its ability, Hydration, and Tail Glow. Tail Glow allows Manaphy to double its SpA with just one use, letting it set up quicker than Calm Mind users.

Other Options

Manaphy can be used as an all round tank with all EVs in defense and special defense. Thanks to its Hydration ability, you can use manaphy in any rain support teams.

Manaphy also has a signature move that can be particularly useful if you´re faced with an opponent who has setup calm mind for example, and your team is in danger of being swept. The move steal stat boosts from opponents. Instead of Grassknot, you can use Energy Ball. You also have the option to use a Choice specs set to enhance its high special attack stat; however due to the numerous possibilities this pokemon has, it really isn´t worth it.

Usual Counters

Manaphy should only be used in the rain, as outside of that weather it is just a Celebi/Jirachi/etc. with more generic typing and fewer moves. As such, anything that changes or nullifies the weather will hurt it. In particular, a well-timed Groudon, Rayquaza, or Tyranitar switch-in can spell doom for a Resting Manaphy, as the lack of rain will force Manaphy to wait out the two turns of sleep. Latias and CM Blissey won´t take much damage from Manaphy, and the latter can easily take it down with Thunder. Palkia won´t take much damage from boosted Surfs and can OHKO Manaphy with Thunder.

Opinion

Manaphy is an excellent pokemon to have on any Uber team, as it provides an excellent backup support if you´re in trouble. Heart Swap can steal any stat changes your opponent can make, and manaphy can survive a powerful thunder from Kyogre, as well as offer defense support in any uber team.
