This article gives you ideas of how to use Poliwrath in battle in the Pokémon Black, Pokémon White and Pokemon B2W2 Games. It lists popular movesets used by competitive battlers, as well as a description on how to use each set to help you understand why the moves were chosen. These popular sets are usually the best to use in battle and so reading this guide will help you in your team building.
Gen 4: OverviewPoliwrath, a bulky water absorbing fighter. Poliwrath packs a punch, from very nice defenses to a fairly good movepool. Alot of the sets below will contain ways of pumping Poliwrath; making it bulkier and stronger.
Ability | Nature | Item | HP | Atk. | Def. | SpAtk. | SpDef. | Speed
Water Absorb | Adamant | leftovers | 252 | 252 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 6

This set is all about opportunity, when your opponent goes for a water move, its Poliwraths Que to act. Send this guy in on water moves and set up a substitute. This guys bulkyness will really be useful, Focus Punch now will give your opponent a few problems, if he switches he gets 2HKOd most of the time.
Ice Punch would be more reliable when facing Salamences/Flygons and other Flying types, rock slide would be best if you are up against gyarados however. Hypnosis could help you out at times and waterfall is for Stab.
This set could also be very useful in ubers, switch in when Specs Kyogre uses Water spout, Sub up and hypnosis/ice punch/ Focus Punch the switch ins.
Ability | Nature | Item | HP | Atk. | Def. | SpAtk. | SpDef. | Speed
Water Absorb | Adamant | choice band | 38 | 252 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 220

Water STAB is the advantage you have against any other fighting types. Brick Break and Waterfall for Stab, Poliwrath unlike the other fighters can´t learn Close combat so Focus Punch would be best for extra fighting power. Ice punch will be very useful, taking out any dragon type. The real problem is choosing which move to fill in the last slot; Earthquake hits Ampharos and Lanturns hard. But taking down gyarados will be a problem without Rock Slide.
Ability | Nature | Item | HP | Atk. | Def. | SpAtk. | SpDef. | Speed
Water Absorb | Adamant | leftovers | 252 | 164 | 94 | 0 | 0 | 0

This set really takes advantage of Poliwraths good defenses, this guy can take Stone edges from Rhyperior and Aerodactyl, Dragon claws from Salamences and all Stab moves from deadly threats like Weavile and Tyranitar.
Hydro pump would fair better tthan waterfall since it can 3HKO Skarmory and 2HKO Hippowdon and Donphans. This set may have good defenses but it lacks attacking power.

This set is even more defensive than the one above, but it lacks even more attack power. Life orb would be better than leftovers if you want to do SOME damage. But overall this set fails in attack, however unlike the other sets this set has a way to recover HP.

This set will deliver the more damage than any other set. Substitute up while your opponent switches and belly drum the next turn. Poliwrath now at 393 Speed and 1076 Attack, is there seriously anything else to say?
You could have hypnosis to smooth the set up, but hypnosis´s accuracy isn´t very reliable. You probably wouldn´t need to have rock slide as an ice punch would do quite some damage to gyarados after a Belly Drum. You might want to carry brick break rather than Waterfall but both are STAB moves and would do quite some damage.
You could go for an Adamant nature to boost its attack, but Jolly is recommended, giving you the much needed speed.
none
Other OptionsPayback is the move that hasn´t been mentioned above but could really be useful against those ghost types.
Usual CountersSkarmory can take a few hits from Poliwrath and roost it off, drill pecking it to death.
Salamence walls both stab moves from Poliwrath as does Gyarados, beware Poliwrath´s Ice punch. Gyarados may not be able to do very much without Earthquake. Zapdos to me is the clear favorite to wall the Toad. Thunderbolt will KO poliwrath and it can roost of any damage. A psychic type like Cresselia/Uxie/Mesprit can also wall Poliwrath well. However some Poliwrath´s may carry Hypnosis so a sleep talker would be very useful here.
OpinionI think Poliwrath can be a beast at times, hes the UU version of a breloom with the subpunching set. But he can also cause havoc in Ubers, try him out in ubers, when your opponent plays a specs kyogre, switch into its water spout or surf and set up a belly drum and rape the team. Poliwrath is slow overall so make the best of its Subs and salac berries.
