These popular sets are usually the best to use in battle and so reading this guide will help you in your team building.
Gen 4: Overview
Since Slowking is weak to the common Pursuit, it will usually be found on teams that carry Steel-types. Steel-types are a great aid for Slowking, as they can defeat most of its counters.
First of all, Slowking is way better than Slowbro when it comes to sweeping. 656 SpA is reached with only one Nasty Plot, and can go up to 853, which is a marvelous SpA stat. 252 HP enables better walling, while Surf is for STAB. Hidden Power Electric handles Gyarados, while Ice Beam tears apart Dragon and Grass-types. Grass Knot itself mauls Swampert, and Flamethrower will tear apart Scizor. Psychic is the second STAB. Slack Off makes this thing a real tank.
Beating Blissey is another advantage this set holds. With the HP EVs, it can take 2 Seismic Tosses; and then Slack Off regaining all its health. In those turns, it can Nasty Plot, then Slack Off, etc. After it has reached +6 SpA (which should be easily done against Blissey), it will be capable of 2HKOing Blissey; and if Blissey tries to stall, Slowking will still emerge victorious.
The basic Special Wall. Surf for the big STAB. Thunder Wave cripples sweepers. Hidden Power Electric can do harm to Vaporeon, and Yawn can shut down a counter. Calm Mind can be used if you want boosts in Special Attack, but Light Screen offers team protection. Slack Off for survivability.
Just to demonstrate how bulky this set is; a Choice Specs Shadow Ball from Gengar will not OHKO Slowking.
Slowking’s Attack stat might not be great, but it sure is decent. The choice between Waterfall and Aqua Tail is dependant on personal preference. It is basically a choice of Accuracy vs Power. However, Aqua Tail is the recommended option to use; because Slowking needs all the power it can get. Return, when used alongside Waterfall / Aqua Tail, gives unresisted coverage. Although, Zen Headbutt makes a great alternative, since it can hit Gengar pretty hard; and gives Slowking a nice STAB move. Earthquake is another replacement, as it can nail Electric-types pretty hard.
Slack Off grants you a recovery move, but Avalanche can be used to destroy Celebi, and other Grass-types. This Slowbro set is capable of surviving a lot of powerful Special and Physical moves; those include:
A Choice Specs Porygon-Z’s Thunderbolt, a Choice Specs Zapdos’s Thunderbolt, Choice Specs Gengar’s Shadow Ball etc.
Choice Specs Slowking is certainly viable, due to its high Special Attack stat and possession of high Defensive stats. Trick cripples Blissey, Snorlax, and Regice; while Surf hits Tyranitar pretty hard, and will OHKO Infernape. Ice Beam OHKOs many Dragon and Grass-types, namely Dragonite, Salamence, and possibly Celebi.
Hidden Power Electric destroys Gyarados, among other bulky Waters such as Vaporeon. Fire Blast obliterates Scizor, Metagross, and other Steel-types.
When it comes to setting up Trick Room, Slowbro usually does a better job. This is because Slowbro carries a high Defense stat, and in a metagame filled with Physical attackers; this comes in really handy. However, Slowking remains a viable Trick Roomer, since a high Special Defense stat grants it the ability to defeat a lot of Special sweepers.
Furthermore, Nasty Plot aids Slowking differentiate itself from Slowbro. A Nasty Plot boosted Surf damages a lot of Pokémon. To further increase the damage dealt by this set, Ice Beam becomes an option. However, this will leave Slowking walled by Water-types; so Grass Knot is a nice replacement for Ice Beam, but leaves you terribly walled by Grass-types.
Most Used Set
With Icy Wind, Slowking becomes capable of slowing down an opponent’s Pokémon, which will be a great aid to your slow Pokémon. This Slowking set makes an excellent counter for Choice Scarf Pokémon, especially Choice Scarf Gengar, Choice Scarf Porygon-Z, etc.
Slowking usually tries to differentiate itself from Slowbro. And to do so, it will usually be found running a Nasty Plot set. Not only does Slowbro not get Nasty Plot, but Nasty Plot can also aid Slowking defeat opponents such as Blissey. In addition, Slowking’s bulkiness is something to watch out for; as it can survive most moves, whether they are Super Effective or not, and retaliate in an appropriate way.
You can try Belly Drum + Substitute + Slack Off+ Ganlon Berry to really tank the competition. Additionally, Counter can be useful.
Blissey can only defeat the Choice Specs set. The Nasty Plot set can easily defeat Blissey, because Slowking doesn’t mind Thunder Wave; and it is resistant to Ice Beam and Flamethrower. Infernape can revenge kill with Thunder Punch, and Tentacruel can Hidden Power Electric, but will hate Nasty Plot Hidden Powers or Cursed Earthquake. Weavile also works wonders as a revenge killer, and so does Tyranitar. Additionally, Celebi can switch in on the Curse set with ease; and then retaliate with Grass Knot or Leaf Storm. All must be wary of random Tricks and Yawns, though.
Completely insane, it will really get the opponent confused and off guard. It is so unpredictable, but that´s Pokémon.
