This article gives you ideas of how to use Magmortar in battle in the Pokémon Black, Pokémon White and Pokemon B2W2 Games. It lists popular movesets used by competitive battlers, as well as a description on how to use each set to help you understand why the moves were chosen. These popular sets are usually the best to use in battle and so reading this guide will help you in your team building.
Gen 5: OverviewMagmortar is a pretty cool looking Pokemon. A powerful base 125 Sp. Attk, a good movepool, 95 base Attk for mixed options, what's not to love? Sadly, a fragile Defense stat, and average speed knock down Magmortar's effectiveness. With 5th gen, Magmortar gets some redemption thanks to Flame Charge. A neutral, max Ev'd and IV'ed Speed for the bounty hunter wannabe caps at 265. After one boost, Speed reaches around 392, outspeeding numerous Pokemon in the process.
Ability | Nature | Item | HP | Atk. | Def. | SpAtk. | SpDef. | Speed
Flame Body / Viral Spirit | Modest | life orb / expert belt | 4 | 0 | 0 | 252 | 252 | 0

As mentioned before, Flame Charge puts Magmortar ahead of the pack. Its good Sp. Defense means you can boost on Sp. attackers of types that Magmortar resists. If you carry Vital Spirit, then you can switch onto Ninetales that use Hypnosis, and proceed to boost and benefit from the sun.
Fire Blast for massive power, Flamethrower for PP, your choice.
Thunderbolt allows strikes on Water types, but primarily Gyarados, who would otherwise stomp you with Stone Edge or Earthquake.
Focus Blast and Cross Chop are intemixed. Blast for special power, Cross Chop for a mixed set, as well as to handle Blissey. HP Ice forms a psuedo-BoltBeam, justifying an Expert Belt, but Grass allows you to strike Swampert and other Water/Ground types that would eat Magmortar for breakfast otherwise. Solarbeam is stronger, but only used in the sun.
Ability | Nature | Item | HP | Atk. | Def. | SpAtk. | SpDef. | Speed

A set more focused on Magmortar's mixed aspect, thanks to it's decent Attack stat. Magmortar gains both Belly Drum and Cross Chop thanks to Hariyama, who gets Cross Chop from the Machop family. Belly Drum maxes out it's Attk, enabling it to dish out large chunks of damage. Flame Charge is still an option, to salvage Magmortar's Speed.
Cross Chop gives Magmortar a niche in OU, for no other Fire type has acess to it. It's accuracy and PP is a letdown, opting for Low Kick, a 4th Gen move to handle the many heavyweights in OU.
Depending on your preference and EV spread, Magmortar has a plethora of Fire moves. Fire Punch is reliable, Blitz is reliable and strong, although you'd be unable to use Belly Drum and Cross Chop. Flamethrower and Fire Blast are the special equivalents, with Overheat only recommendable if you plan to switch often, which is suited for Choic Specs anyways.
Solarbeam is for sun usage, HP Grass for a consistant method for Grass coverage against Swampert, and HP Ice is for the OU Dragons, such as Salamence, Haxorus, Dragonite, and Hydreigon. Thunderbolt is primarily for Gyarados.

Every sweeper can opt for Choice sets, and Magmortar is no exception, thanks to it's massive Sp. Attk stat. Specs for raw power, or Scarf for speed, as Flame Charge won't work on Choice sets.
Flamethrower is for reliablity, Fire Blast for power, or Overheat to smash, but switch out (It works thanks to the nature of Choice users).
Thunderbolt is for Gyarados, again, as well as for weakened Water types with a lower Sp. Def.
HP Grass is for our Mud Fish, Ice for Dragons and Psuedo Bolt-Beam. If under sun, Solarbeam is a stronger option over HP Grass.
Focus Blast is the Fighting move to deal with Heatran, as well as Rock and Steel types that can handle a Fire move, Thunderbolt, or Hidden Power/Solarbeam.
IF you want the benefits of the sun, then Ninetales is a good partner due to drought, just have Grass types to deal with the inevitable Ground or Rock counter from carrying two Fire Types. Speaking of which, Bulky Grass Pokemon such as Ferrothorn can take Ground and any Water types foolish enough to waddle in during the sun, especially a certain frog who would want to wash away your sun with rain. Ferrothorn also can attract Fire types that Magmortar can switch into and set up on (Provided they lack Flash Fire, or are Heatran, who Magmortar can't boost on without dieing to Earth Power)
Rapid Spinners would be highly recommended, for Stealth Rocks will take 1/4 of Magmortar's HP, something precious to a Fire Type with a good Special Defense and to Belly Drummers.
Other OptionsOther options go here.
Usual CountersHEATRAN! The Lava Dome Pokemon can take a Fire move with ease, powering it's own Fire moves, and crush Magmortar with Earth Power. Cross Chop is it's only concern, one lessened due to it's relative shakiness. Bulky Waters also can take it with ease, such as Suicune and Milotic. MIlotic even more, for any status Magmortar inflicts will make it impossible for Magmortar to defeat. Salamence can outspeed and KO with Earthquake, of Hydro Pump is the weather is clear, but must be wary of HP Ice. Physical Hydreigon can also KO it, but has to worry about HP Ice and Cross Chop. Haxorus can outspeed and KO if it manages a Dragon Dance, for it's fragile Sp. Def leave it vulnerable to Magmortar. Dragonite can handle anything tossed at it, and Multiscale will mitigate HP Ice.
OpinionMagmortar, a Pokemon normally found in the lower tiers, stand a good chance in OU thanks to Flame Charge boosting the one stat that held it back-Speed. Also, because of it's good Attack, it can manage a mixed set, or even a Physical set as well, thanks to Thunder Punch. Ultimately, Magmortar can gain footing, although that footing remains shaky due to it's type, but when used efficently, can pose a serious threat to the unprepared, which might happen often to those who wouldn't expect Magmortar to step in the OU tier.
