This article gives you ideas of how to use Gurdurr in battle in the Pokémon Black, Pokémon White and Pokemon B2W2 Games. It lists popular movesets used by competitive battlers, as well as a description on how to use each set to help you understand why the moves were chosen. These popular sets are usually the best to use in battle and so reading this guide will help you in your team building.

Gen 5: Overview

Many of the Pokemon used in most metagames (minus little cup) are either fully evolved or not able to evolve. In other words, those Pokemon are in their final stage, and those Pokemon are usually the most powerful Pokemon of that evolution group. However, one item, the Evolite, has changed how the NFE (not fully evolved) Pokemon should be looked at. The Evolite boosts the defense and special defense of a NFE Pokemon by 50% each, which can really make a difference. Pokemon like Golbat, Porygon2, and Dusclops become much more viable because of their move options and decent defenses.

Gurdurr, Conkeldurr´s pre-evolution, is mostly outclassed by Conkeldurr because Conkeldurr has a greater attack stat than Gurdurr. However, Gurdurr has greater defenses than Conkeldurr. With a Careful nature and with max HP and special defense EVs, and with the Evolite´s boost, Gurdurr has defensive stats of 374 HP, 309 defense, and 327 special defense, which is really quite good. In comparsion, a similar Conkeldurr set has 414 HP, 226 defense, and 251 special defense. Therefore, while Conkeldurr has slightly more HP, Gurdurr with the evolution stone actually takes hits better than Conkeldurr.

Of course, Conkeldurr still outclasses Gurdurr, mainly because of Conkeldurr´s base 140 attack. Gurdurr´s only real set is to be a defensive Bulk Up Sweeper.

This is what Gurdurr has over Conkeldurr, the ability to effectively use a more defensive Bulk Up set and sweep. Given the right conditions, Gurdurr can become a threat to an opposing team. Scrafty can run a similar Bulk Up set, however Scrafty doesn´t completely outclass Gurdurr. Scrafty has higher special defense, an arguable better ability in Shed Skin, and Stab on both Fighting and Dark moves. However, in comparing the two sets to each other, Gurdurr has higher HP, higher attack, and higher defense (due to the Evolite) than Scrafty, and Gurdurr´s special defense isn´t far behind Scrafty´s special defense. (327 to 361) Bulk Up should be used for the first slot for obvious reasons of being a Bulk Up set. After a few Bulk Up boosts, Gurdurr can become hard to stop. Rest is required for this set, because Gurdurr lacks a true method of healing other than Drain Punch. Gurdurr doesn´t even get Leftover recovery unlike many other Pokemon, so Rest is a

essecary evil for this set. Drain Punch is highly recommended for the third slot. Drain Punch is a reliable, decently powered attack that heals Gurdurr, and it really is this sets best attack. If PP is a concern though, Hammer Arm can be used, since Hammer Arm has more PP and power than Drain Punch, and the speed drops usually don´t matter for Gurdurr, since Gurdurr is slow anyway. For the last slot, Payback is recommended to get rid of the Ghost and Psychic Pokemon that resist Gurdurr´s Drain Punch, or Pokemon like Gengar and Jellicent. Payback also gets very good coverage with Gurdurr´s Fighting move of choice. On the other hand, Stone Edge can be used to get rid of the Flying Pokemon that also resist Gurdurr´s Drain Punch, or Pokemon like Zapdos and Dragonite.

Additional Comments:

The EVs and nature are designed to maximize Gurdurr´s special bulk, since Gurdurr would be boosting its defense with Bulk Up. Max HP and special defense EVs should be used, along with a Careful nature. Guts has to be the preferred ability, as Gurdurr would appreciate the boost to its attacks if it is statused. Iron fist can be used to give a boost to Drain Punch, but Guts usually is the superior ability.

Team Mates

Gurdurr really appreciates entry hazards, as they aid in its attempt to sweep. Skarmory and Ferrothorn can both work well, as they don´t take much damage from Flying and Psychic moves, both of Gurdurr´s weaknesses. Gurdurr also appreciates Toxic Spikes being on the field, as they put pressure on the opponent to get rid of Gurdurr. Forretress and Roserade can both work fairly well with Gurdurr; Forretress can take some hits while setting up Toxic Spikes, and Roserade can take some high-powered special hits. In terms of offensive synergy, a Pokemon that can break apart most physical walls is helpful to Gurdurr´s sweep. Latios can work well here, since it does well against Hippwodon, Gliscor, and Skarmory. Latios can also tank some high powered special attacks aimed at Gurdurr.

Other Options

Gurdurr could run the Sheer Force ability, which would make Rock Slide an option. Rock Slide is better than Stone Edge under Sheer Force due to Rock Slide´s better accuracy. However, Guts or even Iron Fist is the superior ability.

Mach Punch could be used instead of Drain Punch or Hammer Arm, due to the fact that Mach Punch is a priority move. However, even with a boost from Iron Fist, Mach Punch isn´t all that viable for this more defensive set for Gurdurr.

Usual Counters

Well...physical walls can stop Gurdurr cold. Pokemon like Hippwodon, Skarmory, and Gliscor can easily take hits from Gurdurr, even if Gurdurr is boosted. Taunt users also really hurt this set, as Gurdurr needs to set up to become a real threat. Pokemon like Gliscor and Thundurus work well, since they both resist Gurdurr´s Stab Fighting moves. Also, while Gurdurr has decent special defense, it can´t take high-powered special moves, like Alakazam´s Psychic or Latios´ Draco Meteor. In general, Gurdurr can´t take too many strong hits, and most fast sweepers have the potential to end Gurdurr´s life before it really starts sweeping.

Opinion

Conkeldurr has a way better attack stat than Gurdurr. However, Gurdurr has greater defenses, and for stall teams and other teams, you don´t want the bulky Gurdurr set to be the opposing last Pokemon.
