Heatran Analysis
http://archives.bulbagarden.net/media/upload/b/b7/485Heatran.png
Summary:

Most Used Set:

The most common set for Heatran is easily the Scarf set. Heatran's immunity to Toxic Spikes and neutrality to Stealth Rock means that Heatran does not have much trouble coming in, considering that it only has three weaknesses, although they are very common. Second is SpecsTran or LO Tran, which trades speed for power, being useful on Sunny Day teams.

Usual Counters:

Blissey is the number one counter to Heatran, laughing at Fire Blasts with a base 130 Special Defence stat and an even bigger HP stat. Snorlax does the same thing, but it has lower stats, but access to Earthquake and has Thick Fat. Porygon-2 is also notable, as it can come in on Heatran's Fire Blast and have immunity, forcing it to switch out. Tyranitar can also come in on a Fire Blast, taking little damage with a resist and a Sand Storm boost. Stall Gyarados takes a hit easily, and can Waterfall or Roar away Heatran.

Types of Teams Pokemon Is Used In:

Heatran are often used on offensive teams, to not only provide synergy, but also a way to revenge kill, while staying bulky and having a great typing. Torment tran and the like can also be used on a Stall team, especially with Sand Storm in play, as it negates the Leftovers of most Pokemon. Offensively, Scizor is one of the best Pokemon to pair with Heatran, due to it only having a weakness to Fire, which Heatran is immune to and boosted by. In stall, Forretress can set up Hazards and also serve for this purpose.

Heatran @ Choice Scarf
Nature: Timid/Modest
Evs: 252 Sp Atk/ 224 Spe / 32 HP

Eruption/ Fire Blast
Earth Power
HP Ice/HP Electric/ Grass
Explosion/Dragon Pulse

Heatran is one of the most popular scarfed Pokemon and having 130 special attack, 77 speed, STAB Eruption and a boost in Fire Attacks by coming in on a common Fire attack! Because of all of this, it's no wonder why heatran is popular today. Most people stick to Fire Blast because of Erupton's drawback, but Heatran is meant as a revenge killer, so it should be at full or near full Hp. Earth Power is another common move on Heatran, as it lets heatran to hit Fire Types, Electric Types and Rock Types. Earth Power also has great coverage with Eruption, with the only common resistors being Salamence, Latias, Dragonite and Gyarados. Sadly for them, they are all taken care of by Dragon Pulse and Hidden Power Electric, which is recommended to use for revenge killing.

Specs

Heatran @ Choice Specs
Nature: Modest
Evs: 252 Sp Atk / 216 Spe / 40 HP

Fire Blast/Flamethrower/Overheat/Lava Plume
Earth Power
Dragon Pulse/HP Ice/HP Electric
Explosion

Heatran with glasses will do some damage. Period. Heatran is bulky enough to be Modest AND Choice Specs. First of all max out special attack. 216 Speed brings Heatrans speed to 244 which outruns Jolly Ttar so that is usually handy. If you are going with explosion you could put the remaining 40 evs into attack, although it won't make a heap of difference.

The first move is your primary move; a STAB'd fire attack. The best power is Overheat and has better accuracy than Fire Blast, but you won't be able to use it repeatedly thanks to the special attack drop it gives. Fire Blast has the power and can be used repeatedly. If you don't fancy the accuracy on FB, then flamethrower and lava plume are excellent options. Flamethrower has decent power and 100% accuracy but Lava Plume has 30% chance of burn so thats nice for you if a Gyarados switches in and gets burnt.

Earth Power is the standard for move 2 covers some of the steels that Move 1 doesnt including Heatran. Also this will hurt Ttar a fair bit.

Earth Power to a Standard Tyranitar with no Sp Def Evs:

Minimum Damage: 162
Average Damage: 177
Maximum Damage: 191

So in most cases Heatran can 2hko Ttar with Earth Power, so with good prediction you should be able to get rid of Ttar quickly.

Move 3 is whether you prefer coverage or whether you want to eliminate certain threats. Dragon Pulse means that with Earth Power and Fire Blast (or whatever STAB'd move you picked), you can every pokemon for neutral damage or more.

HP ice is for dragons; which to be honest, is only Salamence and Flygon atm. On the off chance that the opponent carries Yache Mence, this won't prevent an instant OHKO if it comes into contact with an Hidden Power Ice.

Hidden Power Electric is a nice surprise against the water pokes out there, more namely Gyarados. HP Electric is an easy OHKO on Gyarados I don't even need to show the damage calcs for it. Suicune is easily 2HKOed, so it can think again about switching in. Here are the calcs:

Minimum Damage: 227
Average Damage: 247
Maximum Damage: 267

Sleep Talk
http://www.smogon.com/download/sprites/dp/490.png
Heatran@ Leftovers/Chesto Berry
Nature: Modest
Evs: 244 HP/252 Sp Atk/12 Sp Def

Lava Plume/Flamethrower/ Eruption
Earth Power/Dragon Pulse
Rest
Sleep Talk

This is great at status absorbing. You can switch in on a Spore/Hypnosis and Heatran will still be useful thanks to sleep talk. Also that being said you can switch to other pokes and not be worried about your other pokes being asleep and crippled. 244 HP Evs are maximum lefties gain, 252 Sp Atk evs to do as much damage as possible, but feel free to shift the evs into sp Def to make Heatran more bulky.

Fire Blast nor Overheat are recommended because this set is more for a slower game and Fire Blast will run out of PP quickly and Overheat harshly lowers sp atk, doesnt add to the stalling effect. So therefore Flamethrower and Lava Plume are both great moves. Lava Plume is nice for 30% burn hax, flamethrower for power.

Earth Power for other Heatrans, and Magnezone. Plus pokes like Infernape and Electivire. Dragon Pulse takes down Mence nicely among other Dragons and the only thing that resists both Fire and Dragon is Heatran.

Rest will heal Heatran 100% and cure status aliments. So in this way its excellent at absorbing status. Sleep Talk to continue damage even when asleep.

Torment Tran

Heatran:@ Leftovers
244 Hp, 32 spatt, 12 spdef, 220 speed
Calm
-Substitute
-Torment
-Lava Plume
-Earth Power/ Protect/ Taunt

Popularized by phillip7086, Tormentran is known as one of the most infuriating sets to come across. since most people only have one move that can hurt Heatran, the magma Pokemon can take advantage of this and Torment it, stalling the opponent, while Toxic Spikes and Sandstorm whittle down the opponent, and with Lava Plume, most steel types won't be a problem either, especially considering that Heatran has 106 in both defences and 91 in HP. Pokemon that you should consider using with Heatran are Hippowdon and Tentacruel and Celebi. Hippowdon gives Torment Tran Sandstorm, while Tentacruel provides Toxic Spikes and Rapid Spin. Celebi and Heatran make the Celetran defensive combo, and they pretty much will like any attack, as most attacks hit them for not very effective.

Lead

Heatran:@ Shuca Berry
252 Spatt, 252 Spd, 6 hp
Naive
-Stealth Rock
-Taunt/Explosion
-Fire Blast/ Flamethrower
-Earth Power

Heatran, the mighty sweeper and staller can also function as a lead. With a not too bad speed of 77, Heatran will outspeed Metagross, the most common lead, Flamethrowing it to oblivion, or Taunting it so you won't have to put up with SR. Earth Power is commonly used to beat up on Infernape, who almost always uses Fake Out to get a hit in. Considering that it obviously has Stealth Rock, Heatran can be paired up with LO Celebi, for that again devastating combo of Celetran. With SR, Celebi can then OHKO Tyranitar AND Suicune with Stab Leaf Storm, killing one of Celebi's main checks and a common check for many offensive teams.

Other Options:

Life Orb is an item that can be used if you dislike Choiced Items, while Expert Belt or Shuca Berry may be used so you can bluff having a Choice item. Will-o-Wisp is a possiblity if you want to make Heatran a wall, and Taunt could be used with Toxic to force Blissey out. Magma Storm and Substitute could be a combonation to try and tear apart Stall, forcing walls to stay in while Poison Damage, Sandstorm and Magma Storm tear it to shreds. Metal Sound is a move that could really hurt Blissey's walling capabilities. Iron Head is a way to abuse paralysis and Lava Plume may be used to induce a burn. And Overheat can really cause some pain with a Choice Specs. Other than that, Heatran doesn't have any move moves worth covering.

Opinion:

Heatran is a very versitile Pokemon that can both wall, sweep, stall, lead and revenge kill. On top of that, it only has 3 weaknesses and an immunity to Poison and Burn! Because of this, it is hard to imagine why Heatran is not OU. Fortunately, many Pokemon resist his attacks and can hit back hard, especially considering that all of those weaknesses are common types. Heatran is a jack of all trades, but will not do everything, so countering it once you've found the right set will be easy.
