The second generation OU giant metal snake is back in D/P with some new toys, although, the new toys don’t improve it, tier wise that is, however the previous beast is now a bottom dweller, sitting at UU.

Set 1.

Sturdy Snake

Steelix @ Leftovers
Nature: Impish / Relaxed
EV’s: 252 Hp / 120 Atk / 136 SpD

Moves:
Stealth Rock
Earthquake
Stone Edge / Gyro Ball
Toxic / Explosion / Roar

The most common Steelix, this set takes advantage of its BEAST-LIKE tanking abilities. Since his physical walling capabilities are so massive, you can send this guy into a physical sweeper and easily have a turn to set up stealth rocks.

Stone edge paired with Earthquake proves very useful in this set as it hits everything in the game for at least neutral damage (besides levitating Bronzong)

The last slot goes down to opinion, Toxic for bulky waters, Roar for residual damage in conjunction with Stealth Rocks and acting as a phazer or explosion for that last punch Steelix can pack once at low Hp.

Set 2.

CurseLix

Steelix @ Leftovers / Occa Berry
Nature: Sassy
EV’s: 252 Hp / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
IV’s: 0 Spe

Moves:
Gyro Ball
Curse
Earthquake
Explosion

Very deadly, even in OU once set up. Curse raises Steelix’s defense to phenomenal heights while also increasing his mediocre attack to a respectable figure. Gyro Ball is for STAB and once boosted up by the drop of speed from curse can pack a massive punch, taking hefty chunks of damage from many pokemon. Earthquake is there for secondary STAB and widens his type coverage and explosion can be used as a last ditch to scab another KO.

Set 3.

CurseLix + Rest

Steelix @ Chesto Berry
Nature: Sassy
EV’s: 252 Hp / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
IV’s: 0 Spe

Moves:
Gyro Ball
Curse
Earthquake
Rest

The CurseLix + Rest combo can be incredibly tricky for your opponent to handle. Like in the other set, Curse raises defense to unseen heights and powers up his average attack stat. When Steelix is getting worn down, Rest + Chesto proves very handy as it gets Steelix back to full Hp and rids it of any Status it may have been carrying. The listed EV’s are focused on the lacking SpD and Hp as Def and Atk are getting heightened by Curse anyways.

Set 4.

“I think my Steelix’s gone crazy.”

Steelix @ Choice Band
Nature: Brave
EV’s: 252 Atk / 252 Hp / 4 Def
IV’s: 0 Spe

Moves:
Earthquake
Explosion
Gyro Ball
Stone Edge / Crunch

Steelix can also act as a very aggressive pokemon and can be quite affective as the opponent will not see it coming. Choice band, +Atk Nature and maxing out his attack in conjunction with a hindering Spe nature sets up his key STAB Atk Gyro Ball for some serious damage, OHKOing most fast fragile threats in the game that would otherwise be able to set up and sweep your team.

Earthquake and Stone Edge are listed for there amazing type coverage, Stone Edge in particular hurts foes like Salamence and Dragonite for a lot more then they bargained for, especially because they didn’t think they would be switching into a Choice Banded Steelix firing off Super Effective hits.

Explosion, even without Choice Band can be elephantine in the damage department, imagine with Choice Band. Undoubtedly a large dose of power to come out of this move and he should be OHKOing most pokemon in the entire game, baring the Pokemon that resist or are immune.

Other options:

Elemental fangs are there on offer, thunder fang with a large amount of EV’s in Atk can 2HKO the ever so bulky Gyarados, while Ice fang can cause the Dragon family a very hard time, but there BP are too low and you wont be getting that as much damage as you want unless you waste a lot of EV’s in Atk which are in fact better off in Hp and Defenses.

Psych up is available although useless as the main things that increase there stats in OU are Pokemon that Dragon Dance, Agility, Nasty Plot or Calm Mind, all of these are simply useless to Steelix, also what are the chances you get in on a pokemon increasing there stats, using Psych up while they further there stat increase then using your newly acquired stat increase against your for before you have already fainted and that enemy pokemon has swept your whole team.

Block can trap pokes and may be in conjunction with toxic or whatnot, but still, proves very useless compared the moves mentioned above.

Counters:

Most special sweepers in the game that carry either a fire/water/ground special attack, it’s as simple as that. From bulky waters to special Rapid Spinners such as Claydol, there is numerous ways to bring down the Metal Snake, just beware for well placed toxics and surprising explosions.

Phazers such as Skarmory, Suicune and the like also harass the Curse versions and the latter can surf for a OHKO
