Overview:
Carracosta, arguably one of the better fossil Pokemon in existance, has plenty of things going for it. Carracosta can hit nearly everything for at least neutral damage with its combination of Rock, Ground, and Water moves, and Carracosta has a decent movepool of both physical and special moves. Carracosta has good stat-boosting moves as well. Shell Smash can be used to become a dangerous sweeper after one turn, while Curse can be used for a more defensive set. This prototurtle Pokemon also gets good abilities. Sturdy can help Carracosta live potentally fatal hits, while Solid Rock can help Carracosta live longer.
So, if Carracosta has good abilities, good stat-boosting moves, and good coverage, then what holds it back from truly becoming a potent threat? Its typing is the main issue. While a Rock / Water typing is good offensively, it leaves Carracosta vulnerable to Fighting, Ground, Electric, and Grass moves. Don't be fooled by Solid Rock; Carracosta will still take plenty of damage from these super-effective moves. Also, Carracosta has a very low base 32 speed, and even after a Shell Break, some faster Pokemon like Starmie can still outspeed Carracosta. While Carracosta has a great physical defense stat, its special defense is fairly low, so Carracosta is prone to lose plenty of health points from most special attacks.
