why would you need the dns? shouldnt connection be automatic?

No, connections to our GTS are not automatic. In order to connect to our GTS to receive a Pokemon, users must modify the DNS in their internet settings. See here for more information: http://pokecheats.net/forum/showthread.php?4638-Pokemon-Distribution-on-the-GTS!
