Hey everyone! I've decided to read something creepy/scary for Halloween, so I started looking.. and what better than Higurashi? I've heard interesting things about it, so I'm in the process of reading the Visual Novel now.

What do you guys think of it? Have you seen the anime, read the manga, or read the visual novel? If so, what are your thoughts?

Done all three, pretty much Visual Novel>Manga>anime.
But all three are really good, manga and novel more for storyline and depth, manga and anime more for art that is actually good.
The visual novel has the most depth and story but the worst art, manga is like the mid point, and anime has pretty neat art and animation but skips over minor details and has less depth thank to air time/animation limitations.
Higurashi is really good though, and if you enjoy it, I'll go ahead and recommend other 7th Expansion stuff like Umineko no naku koro ni and Higabana no saku yoru ni. IMO it would go Umineko>Higurashi>Higabana.

Ah this.

The Higurashi no Naku Koro ni/Rei/Kai/Rei/Kina (sorry, I watched Rei before Kai) series is kinda . . . disturbing. But I like it in the sense that it IS disturbing. Gave me a nightmare one night. Which is saying a lot 'cause I NEVER get nightmares.

Man, this is definitely intense.. As an update, I finished the 4 question arcs, and I'm about to start on Meakashi-hen, the first answer arc from the Rei series. I have four things to say for now:
1. I'm so glad I have the PS2 art update. I'd probably be watching the anime otherwise.
2. Mother of God. I don't even know what's going on anymore. I'm split evenly, 50-50 over believing in a curse and believing in human intervention.Tatarigoroshi-hen tossed all of my theories out of the window.
3. I can't wait to find out who was Mion and who was Shion in Watanagashi.I absolutely adore one of them, and really don't like the other, but I'm so confused at this point, I can't tell who's who. Meakashi-hen better explain it all. xD
4. I expected everyone to go crazy at some point in the back of my mind, but I was surprised at some points. Rena always looked like she could snap at some point, RIka was always slightly suspicious to me, and the other 2 weren't so bad. So far, Satoko hasn't really lost her mind, so that's comforting, but I was sad to see Mion get the evil eyes. I will also say I never expected Keichii himself to go crazy either, so that was interesting to read.

All in all, its been great so far.. I can't wait to read more and wrap it up!

I just finished the whole thing now.. For the Visual Novel Readers (Like me) I read all 8 arcs. For the anime watchers, I just read what's equivalent to the original series and Kai.

All I have to say is.. wow. I was right about basically nothing that I thought at the time, except like 2 or 3 things. There are so many things that I catch now if I go back and look. What a well done series! It honestly makes me want to read Umineko as well. xD

Higurashi is a decent anime about friendship. I really enjoyed it, and the characters were really good, in my opinion. I don't really see the game/anime as frightening or startling in the least, it's really interesting. I should really get onto Umineko gbfjgsn I loved Rika so much. She was my favourite character. ;; w ;; //

Anyways, I actually have not played/read/see Higurashi yet, but I am planning to do so in the future. I have heard many great things about it, and it seems really interesting. Maybe I'll shed bucket loads of tears too. Who knows?

Higurashi isn't as sad as a lot of other things I've read (See Clannad) but there were some really powerful moments. The question arcs involved me screaming, and the answer arcs involved me going "Ahhhhh, I get it now!" while still being freaked out. There were two times where I really did cry though. They were great parts.. great novel in general!

I might read Umineko in the end, honestly.. and yeah, I should be made fun of if I do. xD
