I dont have the text or the replay for this, so ill describe the scenario.

I lead with an Alakazam with the kind of set you would never see on its kind.
My opp. leads with a Spiritomb.

I use Skill Swap, replacing my Synchronise with Spiritombs Infiltrator, and he uses Substitute.

Turn 2
I use Trick, and I get Leftovers while he gets my Ring Target (I think thats what the item is called), and he uses Dark Pulse, taking my Alakazam down to 20-28% (Bulky Alakazam FTW).

Turn 3
I use Focus Blast. I hit, super effective, get a crit, and OHKO the Spiritomb. After about 15 cussout posts in the chat, my opp. forfeits.



LOGIC

-Infiltrator enables a Pokemon to ignore Substitutes (along with other defenses) and hit the opponent directly.

-Ring Target causes the holder to be allowed to get hit by attacks that wouldn't usually work (works kind like Foresight or Odor Sleuth), so Focus Blast would be able to hit a Spiritomb for Super Effective Damage. The crit was just fluke, but my opp. clearly didnt care.

- Alakazam (appropriately nicknamed "SpiriTomb Raider"), was specifically designed to counter Spiritomb's, which is an obvious threat. Holding a Ring Target, it has Skill Swap, Trick, Psyshock and Focus Blast. It's EV spread is as follows:

90 attacking stats are really bad in ubers, and when you realize you can only use attacking moves, you may as well just use Ho-oh. At least it has a huge base 130 attack and can burn opponents somewhat reliably. Defog is imperative in both cases, but Ho-oh can also wallbreak, something Lugia can never manage.

No offence, RaS, but Assault Vest Lugia is one of the stupidest ideas I have ever heard. That could work if Lugia had 120 attack or something, but it doesn't, so... why would you use that?

Actually, the mod is right. Cute Charm is gimmicky because infatuation is not a very good status condition, since the opponent can just switch out (not to mention Cute Charm has an unreliable 30% chance of activating). Pixilate + Hyper Voice is better overall because it hits harder.

...I dont want to argue with you, but Cute Charm has helped me out SO much in previous battles. I hear what you say about it, and to an extent, I agree, but think of it this way. Sylveon is weaker in physical bulk, so more often than not, your opponent will hit with attacks like Iron Head or Gyro Ball or something of the sort. Yes, 30% is rather low chance, but it is the same chance as Flame Body or Static (both of which are common on Raichu or Volcarona), and if it does work, the opponent will either risk it not working, or switch out, allowing for a free Wish, so in my opinion, it's worth the risk. Moonblast also has this capability, as the Sp. Att drop, as you should have seen in the battle with the mod, forces switch outs for Specially offensive pokes, again allowing for a free Wish.

It's not that I like not using traditional sets from smogon or some such, but I like playing unpredictably. Go for an unexpected move, and catch your opponent off guard, not knowing what kind of set you are using.

Perhaps if this Sylveon was an offensive, Calm Mind build, then I would use Pixilate + Hyper Voice. But since this is not, I will stick with Moonblast.

(Also, the only difference between Paralysis and Infatuation is that the latter disappears upon switching out. Both have the same chance of hindering an opponent)
