Tier - UU

Hypno is one of the bulkiest special pokemon that the UU tier posesses. It boasts an excellent movepool which provides Hypno to serve a great number of purposes.

Special Wall

Hypno @ Leftovers
Trait: Insomnia
252 HP / 252 SpD / 6 Def
Calm (+SpD, -Atk)
- Wish
- Light Screen / Reflect
- Seismic Toss / Psychic
- Hypnosis / Toxic / Thunder Wave

This is perhaps the greatest special wall the UU tier has to offer. As you can see he is very bulky and has access to a great movepool. Wish combined with Reflect or Light Screen provides tremendous team support and then to combine that with either Hypnosis, Toxic or Thunder Wave.. it just doesn’t get much better. Seismic Toss or Psychic is useful for providing gradual damage to sweepers and stat uppers.

Choice Specs

Hypno @ Leftovers
Trait: Insomnia
252 SpA / 252 Spe / 6 HP
Modest (+SpA, -Atk)
- Shadow Ball
- Psychic
- Hidden Power (Fighting) / (Ice)
- Grass Knot

This set is pretty straight forward, just an all out attacking Hypno. The EVs allow you to outspeed minimum speed Gliscor, max speed Machamp and neutral natured Tyranitar. The choice between Hidden Power types is primarily on whether you would rather be able to hurt Heatran or take out Gliscor and Dragons more effectively.

Nasty Plot Pwnage

Hypno @ Leftovers
Trait: Insomnia
172 HP / 112 SpA / 224 SpD
Calm (+SpD, -Atk)
- Nasty Plot
- Psychic
- Hidden Power (Fighting) / Shadow Ball
- Wish / Baton Pass

Thanks to Hypno’s sheer bulkiness and average special attack he is able to benefit greatly from Nasty Plot. The interesting thing in regards to this set is the choice between Wish and Baton Pass. They cannot be used in conjunction as they are obtained through different events. Wish allows Hypno to have some longevity and makes him quite a good late game sweeper while Baton Pass allows him to provide some great team support.

Calm Minder

Hypno @ Leftovers
Trait: Insomnia
252 HP / 252 Def / 6 SpD
Calm (+SpD, -Atk)
- Calm Mind
- Psychic
- Hidden Power (Fighting)
- Wish

The idea behind this set is to get some calm minds up and become one hell of a bulky pokemon capable of firing off powerful hits. Psychic is there for stab while HP (fighting) hits things that resist psychic such as Tyranitar and Heatran for super effective damage. Wish is for recovery obviously.

Crocune Hypno

Hypno @ Leftovers
Trait: Insomnia
252 HP / 252 Def / 6 SpD
Calm (+SpD, -Atk)
- Calm Mind
- Psychic
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Like Suicine, Hypno is a very bulky pokemon with access to calm mind. This set attempts to play in exactly the same way as Crocune. Before attempting to set up make sure that all Psychic resists have been taken care of e.g Tyranitar. Most useful at the end of a match to clean things up.

Bellypno

Hypno @ Leftovers
Trait: Insomnia
252 SpD / 252 Atk / 6 HP
Adamant (+Atk, -SpA)
- Belly Drum
- Fire Punch
- Zen Headbutt
- Wish

Not sure how viable this set is but with access to a move such as Belly Drum why not give it a shot. Still relatively bulky so there is a chance that once you get Belly Drum up you could recover with Wish.

Team Support

Hypno @ Leftovers
Trait: Insomnia
252 HP / 56 Def / 200 SpD
Calm (+SpD, -Atk)
- Wish
- Light Screen
- Reflect
- Hypnosis / Toxic

Forgoes any attacking moves to purely act as a supporting healer for your team. Light Screen and Reflect in conjunction with Wish and Hypnosis means that it can easily set up screens than switch to an appropriate pokemon.

Extra Information

Other Options- Switcheroo is quite a useful move that Hypno has access to and can allow him to play a similar role to Alakazam putting a choice scarf onto a Blissey or similar poke and gain leftovers for yourself. Counter is also worth a mention and could be used on the team support set or even the walling sets.

EVs- EVs being used depends greatly on the set that you plan on using. Special walling sets require a large investment in HP and SpD while calm minding sets should place EVs into Defense for a greater all round bulkiness. On the attacking sets EVs go into

Counters- Physical pokemon can cause Hypno problems in a lot of cases. Some prime examples are Scizor with X-Scissor and Tyranitar with Crunch. In UU Nidoking could potentially pose a threat with Megahorn.

Other than that Hypno can be seen as set up fodder and most sets should contain a move to remedy this such as Thunder Wave or Hypnosis.

Opinion- Hypno has access to a great movepool and a great ability in Insomnia. It plays a similar role to Blissey when played in UU and he is one of the best team players in the whole game.
