Abomasnow:

Summary:

Most Used Abomasnow Set:

Abomasnow generally runs a Sub Seed set, one which runs the following moves: Substitute, Leech Seed, Blizzard, and Grass Knot / Focus Punch. With these moves, you will often have a tough time taking Abomasnow down. Do your best to take it down as soon as possible, or you’ll risk it setting up on you.

Usual Counters:

Fire-types, such as Heatran and Infernape, can switch-in on any of Abomasnow’s attacks with impunity, barring an occasional Earthquake. Abomasnow will likely have to switch out, or face being OHKOed by a STAB Fire attack. Scizor can switch-in easily and threaten to OHKO with X-Scissor or Bullet Punch, and it can also ruin the Leech Seed strategy with U-turn. However, Scizor should be wary of the rare Hidden Power Fire. Tyranitar can switch-in and set up Sand Stream, which not only makes Blizzard lose its 100% accuracy, but boosts Tyranitar’s stellar Special Defense. It can then threaten to OHKO with a STAB, super effective Stone Edge. Although a very potent counter, Tyranitar has to fear Focus Blast, Focus Punch, Earthquake, and Wood Hammer before considering switching-in. Blissey can counter Special sets well, but has to fear Physical attacks and will detest a Focus Punch.

Types of Teams Abomasnow Is Used On:

Abomasnow is almost exclusively used to set up Hail for its teammates. If you see an Abomasnow lead, you can assume that the opposing team is a Hail team, consisting of 3-4 Ice-types.

In Depth:

Weather Starter@ Leftovers
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 252 HP / 160 SpD / 76 Spe / 20 SpA
Nature: Sassy (+SpD, -Spe)

- Leech Seed
- Wood Hammer
- Blizzard
- Protect

A Sassy Abomasnow set is an excellent lead for Hail teams, since you will be slower than both Tyranitar and Hippowdon (if the Tyranitar is slower, it’s more than likely a Tyraniboah). This means that Hail will be set up instead of Sandstorm. Protect is very useful, as it allows you to scout attacks from opposing Pokémon, and it also gives you a free turn which allows you to regain your health from Leech Seed and Leftovers. Wood Hammer is the best option on this set, hitting Slowbro, Suicune, and Tyranitar harder than Energy Ball / Grass Knot. Blizzard is 100% accurate in Hail, and will 2HKO Skarmory with the aforementioned Special Attack EVs.

Sub Seeder@ Leftovers
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 252 SpA / 204 Spe / 54 HP
Nature: Timid (+Spe, -Atk)

- Leech Seed
- Blizzard
- Grass Knot / Focus Punch
- Substitute

Abomasnow may be cursed with horrible typing, but it does have access to the extremely annoying Substitute and Leech Seed combination. Abomasnow’s STAB Blizzard is really what separates this set from other Leach Seeders, since now Abomasnow can deal with the Grass-types who are immune to Leech Seed. Grass Knot deals heavy damage to bulky Waters, but if you are afraid of Tyranitar and Weavile, then Focus Punch is a great alternative. Focus Punch will also do some excellent damage to Blissey and Heatran. The suggested Speed EVs will allow you to outrun Gliscor with no Speed investments.

Swords Dance@ Life Orb / Leftovers
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 252 Atk / 204 Spe / 54 HP
Nature: Adamant (+Atk, -SpA)

- Ice Shard / Ice Punch
- Wood Hammer / Seed Bomb
- Earthquake
- Swords Dance

Abomasnow is not exactly the greatest Physical attacker, but it can do some respectable damage after a couple of Swords Dance boosts. Earthquake takes care of Heatran, while the Grass moves will OHKO Tyranitar after a Swords Dance boost. Ice Shard is the preferred move here since it will help compensate for Abomasnow’s low Speed. The Item is up to personal preference: Leftovers if you’re looking for a little more bulk, or Life Orb if you want that extra boost. Wood Hammer deals heavy damage to most Pokémon, but if the recoil puts you off, Seed Bomb is a perfectly acceptable alternative.

Choice Band@ Choice Band
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 252 Atk / 204 Spe / 54 HP
Nature: Adamant (+Atk, -SpA)

- Ice Shard
- Wood Hammer
- Focus Punch
- Earthquake

With a Choice Band attached, Abomasnow does reasonable damage, while having excellent type coverage at its disposal. Ice Shard is preferred over Ice Punch, since the priority is immensely useful, and it’ll be surprisingly potent with a Choice Band. The remaining attacks are relatively selfexplanatory.

Choice Specs@ Choice Specs
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 252 SpA / 208 Spe / 50 Atk
Nature: Timid (+Spe, -Atk)

- Blizzard
- Focus Punch
- Hidden Power Fire
- Grass Knot

A STAB Blizzard coming off of such a good Special Attack stat, further boosted by Choice Specs, will put a dent in a lot of Pokémon. Focus Punch is the best way to deal with Blissey, Tyranitar, and Weavile switch-ins. Hidden Power Fire is a great way of dealing with Scizor, Forretress, Metagross, and the plethora of Steel-types in today’s metagame. The extra 4 EVs in Speed are needed to outrun Gliscor, because a 30 Speed IV is required for Hidden Power Fire.

Physical Choice Scarf@ Choice Scarf
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 6 SpA
Nature: Hasty (+Spe, -Def)

- Wood Hammer
- Focus Punch
- Blizzard
- Earthquake

Abomasnow reaches a Speed stat of 360 with the recommended EV spread. This allows it to outrun Pokémon such as Modest Jolteon, Infernape, Gengar, and Froslass. Blizzard is used on this set since it will 2HKO Skarmory even with the limited Special Attack EV investment.

http://www.pokesho.com/img_icon_us/i_abomasnow.gif
Special Choice Scarf@ Choice Scarf
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 180 SpA / 252 Spe / 78 HP
Nature: Naive (+Spe, -SpD)

- Energy Ball / Grass Knot
- Focus Punch
- Blizzard
- Hidden Power Fire

This build has the same concept as the above set, but it uses Special attacks to deal with its usual counters. The 78 HP EVs allow you to survive a Scizor’s Choice Banded Bullet Punch, and OHKO back with Hidden Power Fire. You will also survive a Choice Banded Salamence’s Outrage.

Other Options:

Not much is left for our Yeti friend. Focus Blast is an alternative on the Choice Specs set, but Focus Punch will generally do more damage, and it is more accurate. Rock Slide will not offer Abomasnow much coverage, as it will only allow him to hit Charizard, Articuno, and Moltres, all of which are seldom seen. If you’re feeling really lucky, Grass Whistle and its terrible accuracy is an option.

Opinion:

Since Abomasnow has 7 weaknesses, many people shy away from using him. However, its unique typing allows him to make an excellent counter for bulky Water-types and some Grass-types. Abomasnow is also the only Pokémon that can set up a never ending Hail, which is absolutely imperative for Hail teams.

Updated. And for future reference, we use "Bob, Jill, and Allen" on TU, not "Bob, Jill and Allen". It's up to debate anyway, since some people consider the 'Jill and Allen' to be 2 words, in which no comma is used, even though it is preceded by another word. And some consider it to be like words in series, and that's the way I consider it. Anyway, just giving you tips guys (Oh, and it's 'anyway', not 'anyways'!).
