Summary:

Most Used Absol Set:

Swords Dance Absol is the most common Absol set because of its ability to effectively sweep through unprepared teams. Once its counters are out of the way, many teams will fall to Absol.

Usual Counters:

Most Steel Pokémon that aren’t weak to Fighting can come in on the Swords Dancing set to stop Absol from sweeping. The Mixed Sweeper build, however, takes care of them. Hitmontop is probably the best counter for Absol, coming in on anything not named Psycho Cut, Intimidating it, and threatening Absol with a Mach Punch. Technician Hitmontop also fairs well against Absol, with the combination of Fake Out and Mach Punch taking care of him. Umbreon is a good OU counter for Absol, as it resists Absol’s Dark moves whilst being immune to Psycho Cut, but it should watch out for Superpower.

Types of Teams Absol Is Used On:

Absol usually has teams built around it to allow it to set up a possible sweep. It can also be found on some offensive teams looking for a solid Physical attacker.

In Depth:

http://www.pokesho.com/img_icon_us/i_absol.gifSwords Dance Sweeper@ Life Orb
Ability: Super Luck
EVs: 6 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Nature: Jolly (+Spe, -SpA) Or Adamant (+Atk, -SpA)

- Swords Dance
- Sucker Punch
- Superpower
- Psycho Cut / Night Slash

It’s a pretty simple concept that’s been around for quite some time: Swords Dance up whenever the opportunity presents itself and try to sweep. Be wary though, Absol’s Defensive stats are atrocious, so it won’t enjoy taking hits. Sucker Punch is Absol’s calling card, and also happens to be the strongest priority move in the game. Sucker Punch bypasses Absol’s low Speed, and puts a hefty dent in anything that doesn’t resist it. Superpower provides excellent coverage in tandem with Sucker Punch. It allows Absol to deal with the many Steel and Dark-types switching in trying to absorb Absol’s other attacks. Psycho Cut deals with Fighting-types, such as Hitmontop, as well as Weezing. Night Slash is an option over Psycho Cut, as it allows Absol to deal with slower counters without having to predict with Sucker Punch.

You’re going to want to maximize Absol’s massive Attack first and foremost, so max Attack is obvious. Being as frail as it is, max Speed is a given. With an Adamant Nature, Superpower has a chance of OHKOing Steelix after a Swords Dance boost. However, if you wish for more Speed, Jolly is an option, although you’ll find that the extra power is generally necessary for late game sweeping.

Ability: Super Luck
EVs: 252 Atk / 40 SpA / 216 Spe
Nature: Hasty (+Spe, -Def) Or Lonely (+Atk, -Def)

- Fire Blast
- Sucker Punch
- Superpower
- Psycho Cut / Swords Dance

This set is designed to take out walls on both sides of the Physical and Special spectrum. Fire Blast nails Steel-types, and it has its advantages over Superpower, as Physical walls tend to switch into Absol. Sucker Punch and Superpower will be Absol’s main Physical attacks. The last slot can be used for Psycho Cut again, or Swords Dance if you think you’ll have time to nab a boost. You’ll be sacrificing some Speed to give your Special Attack more of a kick, so know what you can and cannot outrun with this set before trying it out. With a Lonely Nature and 216 Speed EVs, you’ll hit 240 Speed, outrunning Pokémon with Base 70 Speed and a neutral Nature.

http://www.pokesho.com/img_icon_us/i_absol.gifBanded Set@ Choice Band
Ability: Super Luck
EVs: 6 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Nature: Lonely (+Atk, - Def) Adamant (+Atk, -SpA)

- Sucker Punch
- Superpower
- Fire Blast
- Pursuit / Night Slash

Due to his low Defenses, Absol often has a hard time setting up with Swords Dance. With a Choice Band attached, Absol has the ability to hit hard. Sucker Punch and Superpower are once again Absol’s main attacks, but bear in mind you’ll generally have to switch after attacking if your opponent knows you’re Choiced. Fire Blast hits Physical walls, while Pursuit is a cool move on the Banded set. It nails fleeing opponents excepting a Swords Dance sweeper, while scoring a Critical Hit 1/8th of the time.

http://www.pokesho.com/img_icon_us/i_absol.gifScarfed Set@ Choice Scarf
Ability: Super Luck
EVs: 6 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Nature: Adamant (+Atk, -SpA)

- Night Slash
- Psycho Cut
- Superpower
- Pursuit

This set nullifies Absol’s rather poor Speed while sacrificing the power that comes with a Life Orb. Night Slash is listed over Sucker Punch due to this set’s much higher Speed, and the high Critical Hit ratio is definitely welcomed. Pursuit is listed again to nail fleeing Pokémon. It also lets you pick off weakened foes, who you think might switch out.

http://www.pokesho.com/img_icon_us/i_absol.gifDouble status@ Life Orb
Ability: Super Luck
EVs: 6 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Nature: Jolly (+Spe, -SpA) Or Adamant (+Atk, -SpA)

- Thunder Wave
- Will-o-wisp
- Night Slash / Sucker Punch
- Superpower

Not only does Absol learn a bunch of both Physical and Special moves, but he also has a handful of status moves in its arsenal! Another common concept here, Thunder Wave a Pokémon and cripple the switch-in with Will-o-wisp. Another nice thing about this build is that most Physical walls will despise being Burned, so try to nail them on the switch.

http://www.pokesho.com/img_icon_us/i_absol.gifCounter@ Focus Sash
Ability: Super Luck
EVs: 6 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Nature: Adamant (+Atk, -SpA)

- Counter
- Sucker Punch / Quick Attack
- Protect
- Taunt

It’s novelty if anything, but you have the surprise factor on your side. A Focus Sash ensures you’ll survive at least one blow, and then you can proceed to Counter your opponent. Sucker Punch is nice when you’re left with 1 HP because it lets you get in a powerful priority attack. Quick Attack is an option if you wish to lead with this set, since it is a more reliable priority attack. Protect allows you to scout for Choiced Pokémon, as well as making it easier to Counter, since you know what your opponent is thinking. Taunt is a solid move on a lead, as it keeps your opponent from setting up.

Other Options:

Absol has a huge Special movepool, despite his meager Special Attack. If you have enough audacity, you can run either a Choice Specs or Calm Mind set, but Fire Blast should be the only Special Attack you use. Baton Pass sets are also viable if you wish to pass down some boosts. However, sturdier Pokémon fulfill this role far better. Magic Coat can surprise some people and can be used on the Double Status set, but Absol has a good enough movepool.

Opinion:

Absol’s sky-high Attack stat and impressive movepool make him extremely dangerous. Sucker Punch is Absol’s best feature, allowing him to clean up late game with ease. Steel-types are no longer safe, since both Fire Blast and Superpower will put a huge (and often fatal) dent in them. Despite his frailty, Absol is a solid Physical presence.

It also lets you pick off weakened foes, who you think might switch out. Absol’s Speed reaches 373 with a Choice Scarf, enough to outpace all Pokemon in the UU tier, barring Electrode and Swellow. Just watch for priority moves and other Scarfed Pokes.

Another nice thing about this build is that most Physical walls will despise being burned, so try to nail them on the switch. Night Slash is viable with Thunder Wave because Absol won’t need the priority that comes with Sucker Punch, while also being able to score a Critical-hit here and there.

Sucker Punch is nice when you’re left with 1 HP because it lets you get in a powerful priority attack, as well as being able to take out your opponent if they survive the Counter with a Focus Sash of their own. Quick Attack is an option if you wish to lead with this set, since it is a more reliable priority attack. Protect allows you to scout for Choiced Pokemon, as well as making it easier to Counter, since you know what your opponent is thinking. Taunt is a solid move on a lead, as it keeps your opponent from setting up, but Absol isn’t fast enough to abuse Taunt as much as the likes of Azelf and Weavile.

Other Options:

Absol has a huge Special movepool, despite his meager Special Attack. If you have enough audacity, you can run either a Choice Specs or Calm Mind set, but Fire Blast should be the only Special Attack you use. Changed some stuff around, including sets. I was a nub when I wrote this so there were sets that didn't belong, and sets that were missing.
