Aerodactyl:

http://www.arkeis.com/images/pokemonfactory/aerodactyl.png

Summary:

Most Used Aerodactyl Set:

Aerodactyl is really fast and learns Stealth Rock, meaning it can make an excellent suicide lead. The Choice Band set really shouldn’t be considered, since now, in DPPt you have a lot of Physical sweepers that can perform better than him. But Aerodactyl has qualities other Choice Banders don’t, so you might want to try CB Aerodactyl out.

Usual Counters:

Bronzong is probably the best counter for Aerodactyl. Gyro Ball will kill Aerodactyl in one hit and Bronzong doesn’t fear Fire Blasts or Fire Fangs from Aerodactyl thanks to his sky-high Defenses. Most bulky Waters like Suicune, Swampert, Slowbro etc. will work as they have high Defensive stats which help them take Aerodactyl’s moves with ease. Cresselia and Metagross both can shrug its attacks easily and threaten to OHKO with Ice Beam and Meteor Mash, respectively. If you ever see a Pressure Stall Aerodactyl...be warned! You should directly switch to something faster and resistant to its attacks like Choice Scarf Flygon and try to kill it.

Types of Teams Aerodactyl Is Used On:

Offensive teams for the Suicide set. Choice Band sets are also found on offensive teams, while the PP stall set is used on stall teams.

In Depth:

Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Spe / 172 HP / 84 Atk
Nature: Jolly (+Spe, -SpA)

- Stealth Rock
- Stone Edge / Rock Slide
- Taunt
- Earthquake / Ice Fang / Crunch

A auicide lead. Focus Sash guarantees a Stealth Rock and Taunt can shut down set up leads. Aerodactyl’s amazing Speed and access to Taunt and Stealth Rock make it one of the best suicide leads out there. Crunch should be considered if you’re worried about Slowbro, Starmie, and Cresselia, while Earthquake gives excellent coverage with Rock Slide / Stone Edge.

http://www.pokesho.com/img_icon_us/i_aerodactyl.gifCBdactyl@ Choice Band
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 HP
Nature: Jolly (+Spe, -SpA)

- Stone Edge / Rock Slide
- Earthquake
- Ice Fang / Pursuit / Fire Fang
- Aerial Ace / Crunch

In the Advance generation, Aerodactyl used to hit extremely hard with a Choice Band set. In DPPt, it still hits hard, but not as hard as it did. The reason behind that is because many of the new Physical walls introduced in DPPt can walk over Aerodactyl; this is why you have to use a lot of moves that are super effective against said Physical walls.

The only reason you should consider Crunch is to be able to take care of Psychic counters such as Cresselia and Slowbro, while Pursuit can be used for Ghosts that you suspect will flee (Gengar, Missmagius etc. will usually flee from Aerodactyl, and once they do you can grab an OHKO with Pursuit as they switch). Aerial Ace can be used for Breloom and Heracross, while Ice Fang is to be used against Claydol and Dragons. Fire Fang is your only chance against Skarmory and Bronzong, and it 2HKOs Forretress and Scizor. Stone Edge should be Aerodactyl’s main STAB move, but you could give Rock Slide a shot if you’re worried about Stone Edge’s accuracy. Earthquake will score a 2HKO on Metagross, Tyranitar, and Rhyperior.

http://www.pokesho.com/img_icon_us/i_aerodactyl.gifPP stall dactyl@ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Spe / 252 HP / 4 Atk
Nature: Jolly (+Spe, -SpA)

- Substitute
- Protect
- Roost / Taunt
- Stone Edge / Taunt

Can you guess the strategy? Yes, it’s the infamous Pressure stall set! Substitute the first turn. Protect the next....and repeat. Roost when necessary. Use Taunt to prevent set ups and Stone Edge when you need to attack. Useful Tip: If your opponent’s Pokémon is known for having Taunt, Taunt first. No one runs a Scarf Taunter and with the exception of Crobat which matches your Speed you should be able to stall for awhile.

http://www.pokesho.com/img_icon_us/i_aerodactyl.gifStall Phazer@ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Spe / 252 HP/ 4 Def
Nature: Jolly (+Spe, -SpA)

- Sleep Talk
- Whirlwind
- Rest / Nothing
- Roar / Nothing

The idea here is that Sleep Talk changes the priority of the moves Roar and Whirlwind allowing them to be used first. Obviously this thing needs Spikes / Toxic Spikes / Stealth Rock support. This set is basically to be used with stall teams since it makes an excellent phazer. Be warned though, Scarf Pokémon that go over 394 Speed will destroy this thing.

http://www.pokesho.com/img_icon_us/i_aerodactyl.gifMixed Aerodactyl@ Life Orb
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Spe / 80 Atk / 172 SpA
Nature: Naive (+Spe, -SpA)

- Fire Blast
- Stone Edge
- Dragon Pulse / Pursuit / Crunch
- Earthquake

This set offers some surprise against some Physical oriented walls such as Skarmory. Fire + Ground + Dragon isn’t resisted by anything, but if you feel then need to add Pursuit or Crunch to hit Starmie, Gengar, Cresselia, and other Psychics / Ghosts then go ahead. Fire Blast can 2HKO Skarmory and has a 7.69% chance of OHKOing Skarmory with Stealth Rock down. Forretress and Scizor are obviously OHKOed, but sadly Sassy 252 HP / 120 SpD Bronzong is only 3HKOed, so watch out for that.

http://www.pokesho.com/img_icon_us/i_aerodactyl.gifCursing Surprise@ White Herb
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 170 HP / 204 Def / 136 Spe
Nature: Jolly (+Spe, -SpA)

- Curse
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge / Rock Slide
- Crunch / Pursuit / Ice Fang

You may be wondering by now, Curse on a Pokémon with such high Speed?! That may be unorthodox but what you’re missing is Aerodactyl’s held Item. White Herb negates negative stat boosts such as getting -1 Speed after using Curse or -2 SpA after using Overheat. You basically use Curse to give you +1 Attack and Defense, while the Speed drop is negated thanks to White Herb; this is equivalent to using one Bulk Up. From there you can attempt to sweep with a +1 Attack and Defense Aerodactyl.

Note: Only use Curse once, as White Herb can only be used once.

Other Options:

You could try Thunder Fang, but it's usually out-damaged by Stone Edge if you're using it for bulky waters.

Opinion:

Aerodactyl isn’t the attacking beast it was in the Advance generation…But the generation shift did give Aerodactyl a few notable options. Aerodactyl can basically be a Physical sweeper, suicide lead, phazer, PP staller, stat up Physical sweeper and more. Choice Band Aerodactyl might not be the destructive beast it was in the Advance generation, but it still can hit decently hard.

on the stall phazer set remove where you put roar/nothing and rest/nothing, they dont have to be there. other than that another excellent analysis!

Roar / Nothing as in you can use Roar or nothing...The same applies to Rest.

If that is what you're saying at least.

why would you want no move there?

Because Sleep Talk will then only pick WhirlWind in that case making WhirlWind get priority.

If Sleep Talk picks WhirlWind then WhirlWind will go with Aerodactyl's 394 Speed instead of going negative priority.

That's the whole concept of the set, read better :P.
