KECLEON

Type: Normal

Abilities: Color change

Color change: Changes Kecleon’s type to the same type as the last attack used against it.

Summary:

Most Used Kecleon Set:

Of all the standard Kecleon sets, the Sub puncher seems to stand out from the rest when it comes to usage. It is able to hold its own against many of the OU pokemon out there and prove to be a real menace in the UU metagame. Being able to block status moves and/or cripple whilst behind a sub whilst landing hits with the infamous dark/fighting combo makes this set a great one to use.

Though the choice band set is commonly used, most people seem to prefer reliability over high risk-high gain.

Usual Counters:

Rotom and Banette can come in quite easily on the choice band set. Being users of the same move, they can really screw you over later on if you fail to dispose of them early. They can also fight back with Will O wisp, halving your attack power, therefore making Kecleon generally useless for the rest of the game.

Muk can counter Kecleon quite well, though it may want to be wary of a return from a choice banded set. Any special variations are laughed at.

If your opponent is unable to foresee them coming, Aggron and Steelix can counter Kecleon quite effectively. With a low base speed, they don’t seem to mind paralysis so much, apart from the hax factor.

Kecleon Is Used On:

In both OU and UU, Kecleon can prove to be a menace to the opposition. Kecleon’s potential is often overlooked, meaning he appears to be seen a lot more in the UU metagame. Its ability to take down the common walls such as Aggron, Steelix and Golem makes him even more desirable in a UU team, whether it be competitive or novelty. With a great movepool and decent base stats to back it up, Kecleon makes a great addition to any UU team out there.

Counter sash lead

Kecleon @ Focus sash

Nature: Lonely [-Def +Atk] (0 defence IVs)

Ability: Color change

Ev Spread: 252attack/244sp attack/12hp

~Fake out
~Counter
~Sucker punch/stealth rock
~Fire blast/HP fighting/Fire punch

A rather unique set that makes use of counter, one of the often overlooked moves in Kecleon’s movepool. Being a normal type, Kecleon makes for great bait when it comes to drawing out the many fighting types in the UU tier. Whether your opponent switches or not, you can hit them with a Fake out as they come in or knock off any potential focus sash they may be holding.

Should they come in with a fighting type poke, stay in and use counter while they use one of their super effective moves in the hopes that they’ll be +1 against you. When you hang on with your sash and kill them off with counter, they’ll start getting worried.

Thinking nothing of it, they might bring in a Steelix or Aggron to wall you. Something else they don’t know about is the special attack in the fourth slot. The pair might think they’re able to put up stealth rocks without a worry in the world, but once the respective special attack removes a large portion of their health, your opponent will really start worrying.

Kecleon will outspeed steelix no worries, enabling fire blast to hit Steelix at full power for a 2HKO on all standard variations.

If you run HP fighting to deal with Aggron, take 52 EVs off sp attack and place them into speed. Doing this will allow you to outspeed all Aggron with 0 speed EVs.

If Vileplume/Victreebel are more of a threat to your team, dump the special attack EVs into speed and teach Kecleon fire punch. With Fire punch and focus sash, the special attack EVs are irrelevant and 252 speed allows you to outspeed all Vileplume and all Victreebel with a Neutral nature and up to 8 speed EVs.

The 12 HP EVs allow you to OHKO all Snorlax with counter should you come in on one that has set itself up ready for a sweep.

The third moveslot comes down to overall preference. Stealth rocks will prevent Moltres, Articuno and Charizard from switching in safely on anything later in the game whereas sucker punch will let you hit the assortment of Psychic and dark types that may appear in UU.

Rain dance supporter

Kecleon @ Damp rock

Nature: Careful [-Sp.Atk +Sp.Def]

Ability: Color change

Ev Spread: 248hp/80 attack/180sp def

~Rain dance
~Body slam
~Stealth rock
~Magic coat/Toxic/Sucker punch/Drain punch/Brick break

A custom set built for a rain dance team. Due to Kecleon’s lack of speed, this set seems almost inferior to Persian. Despite the poor speed, Kecleon does have its advantages. One of the most notable advantages is the extra bulk. With a little more bulk on its side, Kecleon won’t have as much trouble setting up rain in the late game. Not only does it have extra defence, its STAB move deals some damage to the opposition AND offers the chance of paralysis. (Barring ghost types)

Stealth rock gets your entry hazards up early in the game, which is always handy seeing as there are many fire threats in UU that don’t take stealth rock too well. Kecleon carries enough bulk to be able to set them up.

The 4th move is all up to preference. Offensive moves for extra coverage or status. Being a supporter, toxic is always a nice move to have for any stalling contests that may happen to start later on. Sucker punch provides a move to hit the ghost types with and offers priority against frail sweepers later on. Drain punch for self healing and brick break for dismantling the screens on your opponent’s side and dealing damage to the steels such as Aggron and Steelix. (Assuming you don’t want to bring in a water sweeper just yet). You could also have Magic coat to stop status leads from putting you to sleep.

Nasty plot

Kecleon @ Life orb/Leftovers

Nature: Modest [+Sp.Atk –Atk]

Ability: Color change

Ev Spread: 200hp/252sp attack/52speed/6 sp def

~Nasty plot
~Ice beam
~Thunderbolt
~HP fighting/Fire blast/Grass knot/Psybeam

A special attacking Kecleon built for the element of surprise. The objective is simple, get a nasty plot boost in and proceed to sweep.

The listed moves offer great type coverage, being able to handle most, if not all pokemon in the UU tier. Boltbeam offers superb coverage, being resisted by only Lanturn. HP fighting with 52 speed EVs will allow you to get the jump on Aggron and OHKO off 1 nasty plot boost + LO boost. Fire blast offers a much more efficient option for taking down the likes of Steelix and the various grass types in UU. Grass knot will bring Gastrodon down whereas Psybeam gives you an attack to scare off Weezing and other fighting/poison type threats who may come in on you.

Sub puncher

Kecleon @ Leftovers

Nature: Adamant [-Sp.Atk + Atk]

Ability: Color change

Ev Spread: 240hp/236attack/32 sp def

~Substitute
~Thunder wave/Magic coat
~Focus punch
~Sucker punch

Good old sub punching Kecleon. The objective is simple. Predict a switch and throw yourself behind a substitute. From there, you may proceed to hit the enemy with either focus punch or sucker punch. Or, you may choose to cripple them with paralysis and go with thunder wave.

The dark/fighting combination is only resisted by 2 pokemon, Heracross and Toxicroak, making those two moves ideal for covering the majority of the threats in UU. If you cripple a poke whilst behind a sub, you will find it much easier to set up more substitutes as the turns tick over, however a little bit of hax and prediction are required to prevent you wasting too much HP making more and more subs.

Magic coat is another option to consider over thunder wave. Because Kecleon is so slow and has no reliable recovery moves in its arsenal, status is a major worry, especially when it comes to putting up subs. Magic coat makes Kecleon go first, blocking all status coming its way. From there, you may proceed to set up.

The HP EVs allow you to make 5 subs, taking leftovers into account.

Choice band

Kecleon @ Choice band

Nature: Adamant [-Sp.Atk + Atk]

Ability: Color change

Ev Spread: 220hp/252attack/36def

~Return/Body slam
~Sucker punch
~Focus punch
~Rock slide/Trick

In the UU metagame, a choice banded Kecleon can really hurt a lot of pokes, providing your prediction is up to today’s standards. First off, you have your choice of STAB move. Return if you want a move that puts a dint in anything that is unable to resist it, or Body slam if you would like to exchange power for a chance at paralyzing your opponent.

Once again, the dark/fighting combination of focus punch and sucker punch have been included in this set. Focus punch will take a huge chunk out of any incoming Golem or Aggron who think they can wall your ***. Sucker punch will give Kecleon that much needed priority and take down the ghosts and psychics who try to rain on your parade.

The last move comes down to preference. The potential to screw with your opponent’s team or the ability to take out a few other pokes who may pose a threat to your team. Rock slide will take care of any incoming Charizard, Aerodactyl, Frosslass, Drifblim and Articuno. With trick, these 5 will have no problem coming in on you.

RestTalker

Kecleon @ Leftovers

Nature: Careful [-Sp.Atk + Sp.Def]

Ability: Color change

Ev Spread: 252hp/80 attack/176sp def

~Return/Body slam
~Toxic/Fire punch
~Rest
~Sleep talk

Kecleon makes for a nice special wall with his high sp defence. The only real problem is the lack of a reliable recovery move. With the rest talking combo implemented, Kecleon makes for a nice status absorber. This set is self explanatory. Rest on low health and use sleep talk to attack.

Return makes for a nice STAB move, however, seeing as this Kecleon is built more for walling you may rather body slam for the paralysis factor. If you choose to run body slam, you’re better off running fire punch over toxic. With the chance of paralysis being 30%, toxic won’t be as beneficial because anything that comes in may suffer paralysis, rendering toxic useless.

Other options: Kecleon has many supportive options up his sleeve. You could try for a trick room supporter with max attack EVs, allowing you to get first strike and hit hard with the 306 attack he can reach. Give him a life orb if you don’t plan on keeping him around for long.

A specs set is a viable option, with Kecleon being able to reach 360 special attack with a specs boost. Paired with the great special attacking options up his sleeve, the specs set can be lethal as it isn’t expected. With 453 attack power in total, the choice band set outclasses the specs set however.

Access to the bolt beam elemental punches opens the door for a potential life orb set. Mind you, with no reliable healing move, don’t expect Kecleon to last very long.

Opinion: With decent stats and a great movepool, Kecleon makes a nice addition to many teams. It makes for a great pokemon to muck around with when it comes to trying different move combinations and team strategies. Ranging from a wall to a sweeper, there are many great things a Kecleon can do for ones team. Its unique ability can work for the better should you be carrying different types of moves. STAB fire punch for example?

lol, I'm not trying to be a mod. With all those alts I made, there's no chance anyways. XD It's great looking back to my first crappy analysis (when I first joined) and seeing how much better the new ones are.

If you do Toxicroak, don't forget to add PC's (PheonixClaw's) set.
