Banette:

Summary:

Most Used Banette Set:

Banette generally runs the Trick Choice Scarf / Choice Band set and is usually used as a lead on Under Used teams. Its ability to shut down Under Used stallers by Tricking a Choice Scarf / Choice Band onto them, and then crippling a few Pokémon with its status moves, is just splendid.

Usual Counters:

Open Banette’s mouth and it will die…Or, just outpredict it. Something fast (incase Banette is using a Choice Scarf) that can kill with an unboosted attack makes short work of Banette, just watch out for Focus Sash and status moves.

Types of Teams Banette Is Used On:

Banette is usually used as a lead on virtually any type of Under Used team. Its ability to shut down Clefable, Steelix, Rotom, Hitmontop, and many other Under Used stallers by Tricking a Choice Scarf / Choice Band on them is just astounding.

In Depth:

Ability: Frisk
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe
Nature: Adamant (+Atk, -SpA)

- Shadow Sneak
- Sucker Punch / Pursuit
- Return
- Trick / Thunder Wave / Will-o-wisp

A STAB, Choice Band boosted Shadow Sneak coming from a 115 base Attack stat is nothing to snicker at. Pursuit over Sucker Punch is up to what kind of predicting you want to do and whether you want to be trapping a Pokémon that would want to switch out from you or hitting one that would stay in and try to attack you. Return is so you can actually hit incoming Dark-types and you can do a fair amount of damage to the more frail ones like Absol, Sharpedo, and Cacturne. Trick is a fun option in the last slot due to Frisk, but the other two moves can be more reliable, this is due to you being able to get outpredicted into Tricking a fellow Choice Bander that switches in thus getting locked into Trick and being forced to switch out.

Ability: Frisk
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Nature: Timid (+Spe, -Atk)

- Trick
- Calm Mind
- Hidden Power Fighting
- Shadow Ball

Trick your Choice Item onto something that doesn't want it and then attempt a Calm Mind sweep. Hidden Power Fighting and Shadow Ball provide Banette with the best coverage it's going to get. Timid Nature and max Speed is to try to get this thing to attack first and keep up a sweep.

Ability: Frisk / Insomnia
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe
Nature: Adamant (+Atk, -SpA)

- Shadow Claw / Shadow Sneak
- Knock Off
- Will-o-wisp
- Thunder Wave / Destiny Bond

This set showcases the one thing that sets Banette apart from all the other Ghosts in the Under Used environment: Knock Off. This set can be quite effective if played correctly. Will-o-wisp is for crippling Physical attackers, while Thunder Wave is to cripple faster opponents. Destiny Bond has some merit but is difficult to work with Banette's low Speed and although it is tempting, shouldn't be used with Thunder Wave.

Ability: Frisk
EVs: 56 Atk / 200 SpA / 252 Spe
Nature: Jolly (+Spe, -SpA)

- Snatch
- Knock Off / Thunder Wave / Will-o-wisp
- Shadow Claw / Shadow Sneak
- Sucker Punch / Return

This thing might not look very effective in theory, but in practice it has some qualities over other Banette sets…Lead off with this guy and you can immediately scout your opponents lead, then proceed to Snatch a boost if you don't see a Choice Item and have some good prediction skills. Or, you can cripple the other Pokémon as you hang on with your Focus Sash.

Other Options:

Banette’s move pool is limited, so practically everything that is viable competitively has been covered. However, Trick Room can be used if you’re looking for something fun to set up Trick Room, but that role is generally done better by Bronzong in the Over Used metagame and Grumpig in the Under Used environment.

Opinion:

I have to say Banette is fun. Frisk is very cool and can give away a lot of what your opponent wants to do, making prediction that little bit easier. The 115 base Attack is nice but, when paired with his other abysmal stats, he's not winning any awards. Use Banette if you feel like having a laugh and he can surprise you with some nice results.
