Summary:

Most Used Deoxys-A Set:

Deoxys-A is usually used as a mixed sweeper since it has 180 Base attack stats and a 150 Base Speed Stat. Choice Specs and Choice Band sets are also viable but suffer from the move restriction problem and are more scared of Pursuiters. CounterCoat Sash sets are also viable since they carry the surprise factor but are ruined by the common entry hazards and the uncommon Sandstorm / Hail Storm.

Usual Counters:

Giratina can survive Choice Specs Ice Beams and Choice Band Ice Punches easily. Then, it can retaliate by throwing a Dragon Pulse / Dragon Claw in Deoxys-A’s face causing it to faint. Ghost and Fighting Arceus can easily counter the Choice Band sets and can do well against the Choice Specs and Life Orb variants of Deoxys-A. A bulky Bug Arceus can survive nearly every move from Deoxys-A but will fall to boosted Fire Punches. Spiritomb is immune to Superpower, Counter, and Psycho Boost. It can then Pursuit or Shadow Sneak Deoxys-A away. However, it is 2HKOed by Choice Specs boosted Thunder, so it must take care when switching-in. Metagross, Jirachi, Scizor, and other Steel-types can take care of Deoxys-A easily, but should be careful of Hidden Power Fire / Fire Punch.

Types of Teams Deoxys-A Is Used On:

An amazing sweeper such as Deoxys-A should obviously be found on offensive teams.

EVs: 6 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Nature: Hasty (+Spe, -Def) Or Naive (+Spe, -SpD)

- Thunder
- Ice Beam
- Superpower
- Shadow Ball / Hidden Power Fire

Deoxys-A is an incredible mix sweeper, having outstanding Attack and Special Attack stats. Thunder is intended to OHKO Pokémon such as Manaphy; it can also score a 2HKO on Ho-oh and Kyogre. Additionally, the 30% chance of Paralysis Thunder brings is always welcome. Ice Beam is intended to pack damage on the abundant Dragon-types in the Uber tier. Ice Beam is also helpful to deal with Groudon. Superpower is for a powerful hit against the walls that try to resist Deoxys-A’s moves, such as Blissey and Dialga. Hidden Power Fire scores an OHKO on Scizor and 2HKOs Jirachi and Metagross; while Shadow Ball helps against Mew, Mewtwo, Ghost Arceus, and the common Deoxys-S leads.

- Ice Beam
- Thunder
- Superpower
- Psycho Boost

This set hits incredibly hard, but suffers from Pursuiters. Psycho Boost might have terrible type coverage in the Uber metagame, but it allows Deoxys-A to score an OHKO on Palkia, something that is very hard to achieve. Superpower takes care of Blissey and Dialga, however, Deoxys-A is not capable of OHKOing Blissey with Superpower anymore since it lost the boost Life Orb gives it. Thunder is now capable of OHKOing Ho-oh and Kyogre thanks to the boost Choice Specs grants.

Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Atk / 6 Def / 252 Spe
Nature: Adamant (+Atk, -SpA) Or Jolly (+Spe, -SpA)

- Ice Punch
- Thunder Punch / ExtremeSpeed / Pursuit
- Superpower
- Fire Punch

This set still suffers from Pursuiters and move restriction, but it does hit amazingly hard. Ice Punch helps with Rayquaza and Garchomp, but fails to even 2HKO Groudon and Lugia. Ice Punch can also help deal with Latios and Latias, who often switch-in thinking that they are capable of standing Deoxys-A’s assaults. Fire Punch helps with Scizor, Forretress, Metagross, and Jirachi. Superpower can now OHKO Dialga thanks to the boost Choice Band brings to the table. Thunder Punch can only 2HKO Kyogre and Ho-oh, while Pursuit helps against Psychic and Ghost-types. ExtremeSpeed offers Deoxys-A a priority attack that helps deal with weakened foes and enemy Deoxys-A, making an Adamant Nature recommended as there’s no need for the extra Speed when using the aforementioned priority move.

Ability: Pressure
EVs: 50 HP / 220 SpA / 240 Spe
Nature: Hasty (+Spe, -Def) Or Naive (+Spe, -SpD)

- Ice Beam
- Superpower
- Thunder
- Counter / Mirror Coat

This set carries the surprise factor and can easily kill 2 Pokémon per game, but only works once. Predict that your opponent hits you with a strong Physical attack, survive with Focus Sash, then Counter it causing the opponent to faint. Mirror Coat is also an option.

Always use this set as a lead so you can avoid Stealth Rock and other forms of residual damage.

http://www.pokesho.com/img_icon/i_deokishisu_a.gifSub Deo-A@ Petaya Berry
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 6 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Nature: Hasty (+Spe, -Def) Or Naive (+Spe, -SpD)
IVs: 30 HP

- Ice Beam
- Superpower
- Thunder
- Substitute

Bring this in late-game when the opponent’s Dialga or Blissey are weakened enough for Superpower to kill. After that, keep Substituting until you reach 25% health. You’ll get the Petaya Berry boost then. Thunder and Ice Beam will hurt everything pretty badly. However, one should be careful of Sandstorm and Toxic Spikes, as they can ruin this set’s effectiveness by cutting down Deoxys-A’s HP constantly.

Note: 30 HP IVs are needed to allow Deoxys-A to receive the Petaya Berry boost on the 3rd Substitute.

Other Options:

Zen Headbutt OHKOs Fighting Arceus and 2HKOs Ghost Arceus who threaten to wall the Choice Band set. The downside to this is that Zen Headbutt gives practically no other coverage in the Uber metagame due to its Psychic-typing.

You could try running a Trick Choice Scarf Deoxys-A, but it isn’t really effective.

Opinion:

It has 180 Base attack stats and a 150 Base Speed stat. If that doesn’t scream “amazing sweeper”, then I don’t know what does. It does come at a price though—anything in the game can OHKO Deoxys-A.
