Dialga:

Summary:

Most Used Dialga Set:

Dialga is usually used as a mixed attacker. The Bulk Up set is also pretty common. Its prevalence is due to it being a potent Physical attacker and with the right support it’ll be able to easily sweep teams.

Usual Counters:

Fighting-type Arceus is the best counter around, taking neutral / not very effective damage from absolutely all Dialga’s moves. The only worry Fighting-type Arceus has is Draco Meteor, and that problem can be solved with the help of Calm Mind and Recover.

Heatran is also a good counter for Dialga. Heatran can come in on the many attacks it resists or even attempt to switch-in on Overheat to gain a Flash Fire boost and then OHKO Dialga. But if you’re using Heatran as a Dialga counter, then watch out for Aura Sphere, Earth Power, Earthquake, and Brick Break. Deoxys-D will hate being Poisoned by Toxic or taking a Choice Specs Draco Meteor, but where Deoxys-D shines is having the ability to stall out the mixed attacking moveset. And thus, it makes a pretty excellent counter to Dialga.

Skarmory does pretty well against the Bulk Up and Choice Band (be careful of Overheat) movesets, it can also set up Spikes and Roar out the Bulk Up boosts. Forretress works in a similar manner, but it has to switch out to another counter after setting up, due to the lack of a phazing move. Lugia works similarly to Skarmory, but is going to hate a Choice Specs boosted Draco Meteor, Thunder, Overheat, or being Poisoned by Toxic. Lugia can set up Reflect or Light Screen and Whirlwind out Dialga's Bulk Up boosts. Blissey handles the Choice Specs verison quite well, unless Blissey’s HP is under 70% or Aura Sphere causes a Critical Hit.

Groudon does well against most Physical Dialga, and it usually OHKOs it with Choice Band boosted Earthquakes. Dugtrio can only switch-in on Thunder, but is an excellent choice to revenge kill a slightly damaged Dialga. Speaking of trapping, Magnezone is good at that and can use Metal Sound to abuse a powerful Thunder afterwards.

Types of Teams Dialga Is Used On:

Bulk Up versions of Dialga usually have teams centered around them. Other sets are usually found on offensive teams.

In Depth:

Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 SpA / 136 Atk / 120 HP
Nature: Quiet (+SpA, -Spe) Or Mild (+SpA, -Def)

- Fire Blast / Earth Power
- Thunder
- Brick Break / Outrage
- Draco Meteor

This Dialga hits many Pokémon in the Uber metagame hard. It also serves as a great stall breaker in the Uber environment due to its immunity to Toxic and resistance to Stealth Rock. Draco Meteor is Dialga's main STAB move and inflicts heavy amounts of damage on anything that doesn’t resist it. Draco Meteor also nails the common Latias and Giratina who switch-in expecting to wall Dialga.

Thunder scores a 2HKO on Ho-oh, Lugia, and Kyogre. It can also score a possible OHKO on Manaphy. Fire Blast is able to 2HKO a Specially Defensive Metagross even with Rain in effect, although, it’s not a guaranteed 2HKO if you’re using Expert Belt. Fire Blast can also OHKO Scizor, Forretress, and has a 41% chance of OHKOing 252 HP / 252 SpD Calm Jirachi. Although, you could use Earth Power over Fire Blast as it takes care of opposing Bulk Up Dialga.

Blissey likes to wall your Special hits, but she is not going to enjoy getting hammered by Brick Break. Heatran cannot switch-in safely as well because of Brick Break. Outrage is an option over Brick Break because it OHKOs both Latias and Latios, which Draco Meteor cannot do after the aforementioned Pokémon have gained a Calm Mind boost.

When it comes to the choice of Items, Expert Belt is usually the better option, because Dialga has excellent type coverge so it will hit most things for Super Effective damage. In addition, Dialga does not enjoy the recoil he takes from Life Orb. However, you could use Life Orb because it gives that extra kick of power. Now if you deicide to use Life Orb, then you should consider running a less Defensive set by switching to a Mild Nature and taking away some HP EVs and putting them into a different stat of your choice.

Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpD / 6 Atk
Nature: Careful (+SpD, -SpA)

- Outrage
- Bulk Up
- Rest
- Sleep Talk / Earthquake

This set focuses on making Dialga a potent Physical attacker while still retaining some Defensive bulk. With the given EV spread, Dialga becomes one of the best Kyogre counters in the game. The reason behind this set being such an excellent Kyogre counter is because it is resistant to Water Spout, Surf, and Thunder, while still surviving Choice Specs boosted Ice Beams.

After a couple of Bulk Up boosts, not even Choice Band Earthquakes from the likes of Groudon will be able to even 2HKO Dialga; and after Dialga has gained said Bulk Up boosts, it will be capable of unleashing a powerful Outrage which will tremendously dent even the Steel-types that resist it. However, if you want to get rid of Steel-types faster, then Earthquake is an option over Sleep Talk. Although, the combination of Sleep Talk and Rest is too good to give up. As for the Item, Leftovers is more reliable and consistent, but Adamant Orb can give Outrage a needed kick in power.
Note: Dialga will not be locked into Outrage if the aforementioned move is picked when using Sleep Talk.

Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 SpA / 224 HP / 32 Spe
Nature: Modest (+SpA, -Atk)

- Aura Sphere
- Dragon Pulse
- Overheat / Thunder
- Draco Meteor

Choice Specs Dialga is one of the most hard hitting Special Attackers in the Uber metagame. A STABed Draco Meteor running off of his superb Special Attack stat hits many opponents hard and will deal serious damage to anything that doesn’t resist it. Aura Sphere will only 3HKO Blissey, it is useless to use Brick Break because it will fail to 2HKO Blissey. Aura Sphere's reason for being here is to deal heavy damage to opposing Dialga, Tyranitar, Heatran, and Darkrai.

Thunder is your best friend against Kyogre and it also comes with a chance of causing Paralysis.
The 32 Speed EVs allow Dialga to outrun max Speed Adamant Natured Tyranitar, while the HP EVs here help Dialga switch-in easier.

Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Atk / 224 HP / 32 Spe
Nature: Adamant (+Atk, -SpA)

- Outrage
- Earthquake
- Overheat
- Shadow Claw / Stone Edge

Not as powerful as the previous moveset, but it can still do some nice damage. Outrage is an obivous must on this moveset. Outrage 2HKOs 252 HP / 0 Def Groudon, it is also capable of OHKOing Kyogre that do not invest in HP and Defense with Stealth Rock in play.

Earthquake is a must on this moveset as well as it deals Super Effective damage against Steel-type Pokémon such as Metagross, Registeel, opposing Dialga, and Heatran. Overheat is here to defeat Skarmory and Bronzong, who think they can wall your Ground and Dragon moves. The last moveslot is mostly up to personal preference and what your team can handle. Shadow Claw hurts the common Psychic and Ghost-types found in the Uber metagame. However, Outrage already does enough to them, so Stone Edge can be a nice alternative to hurt Lugia and Ho-oh, and it still messes up Rayquaza if it decides to switch-in.

Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 140 SpA / 118 SpD
Nature: Modest (+SpA, -Atk)

- Draco Meteor / Dragon Pulse
- Thunder Wave / Toxic
- Stealth Rock
- Flamethrower / Thunder / Roar

Dialga is commonly used as a Mixed attacker / Physical sweeper / Special sweeper, but one should not forget his amazing supporting capabilities. The choice between Draco Meteor and Dragon Pulse is dependant on personal preference. Thunder Wave is the preferred option here as Ubers is such a fast-paced metagame. However, Toxic allows Dialga to cripple one of its most common counters, Groudon.

Stealth Rock aids Dialga to become one of the best supporters in the Uber metagame; it also allows Dialga to guarantee a 2HKO with Flamethrower against 252 HP / 252 SpD Careful Bronzong. In addition, Flamethrower allows Dialga to take care of Grass-type Arceus, while Thunder can take care of Lugia, Kyogre, Manaphy, and Ho-oh; its chance of causing Paralysis is also always welcome.

Other Options:

Dialga has a huge movepool, so it has some pretty nice alternative choices leftover. Roar is nice for phazing and ruining stat uppers, but do not be tempted to use it with Stealth Rock since it will ruin Dialga’s versatility drastically. In the Uber metagame, a Base Speed of 90 and below is sluggish, so Dialga can afford to use Trick Room.

Opinion:

Dialga is one of the best Defensive Pokémon in the game. Dark, Ghost, Bug, Electric, Water, Normal, Flying, and Grass resistances help Dialga become even more of a Defensive beast than it already is. Dialga is also a unique Dragon-type since it isn’t hit Supper Effectively by Dragon and Ice moves. Although, a weakness to Fighting and Ground-type attacks hurt Dialga drastically.
