Lunatone:

Summary:

Most Used Lunatone Set:

Lunatone's most used set is probably the Calm Mind set. It allows Lunatone to set up against slower Pokémon like Clefable.

Usual Counters:

Pokémon that pack Pursuit, although uncommon in the Under Used environment, can easily destroy Lunatone. Pokémon with high Special Defense and a resistance to Lunatone's STAB Psychic make ideal counters. Ghost Pokémon such as Banette can switch-in on Lunatone and threaten it with a STAB Shadow Ball, unless Lunatone is carrying Shadow Ball itself. Steel-types will defeat most versions of Lunatone if it does not have Earth Power.

Types Of Teams Lunatone Is Used On:

Lunatone can be used as a Special sweeper on any team. Lunatone can be used on a Baton Pass team, but its mediocre Speed stat and large weaknesses will often leave Lunatone dead more times than not.

Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 120 SpA / 136 Spe
Nature: Modest (+SpA, -Atk)

- Calm Mind
- Hidden Power Rock
- Earth Power
- Ice Beam / Psychic / Signal Beam

Calm Mind Lunatone is the most used set, and for a good reason. After one Calm Mind, Lunatone can become a deadly sweeper. Hidden Power Rock gives Lunatone Special STAB, and along with Earth Power and Ice Beam, lets Lunatone attain near perfect type coverage. Ice Beam is generally the better option when choosing a move for the fourth moveslot, as it allows Lunatone to hit Grass and Ground-types hard. Psychic is for dual STAB and to destroy all Fighting-types in UU. Signal Beam can be used to faint Sharpedo and other Dark-types.

Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 120 Def / 136 Spe
Nature: Bold (+Def, -Atk)

- Baton Pass
- Rock Polish / Calm Mind
- Hypnosis / Substitute
- Hidden Power Rock / Earth Power / Ancientpower

Baton Passing is one of Lunatone's better qualities, given the many different options that Lunatone can pass. The choice between passing Calm Minds or Rock Polishes is decided by what your team needs more. Calm Minds should be passed to Pokémon that are good Special sweepers; while Rock Polish should be passed to strong Pokémon that don't quite fit the Speed requirement, such as Aggron, Golem, and Poliwrath.

Hypnosis can be used to put away one of your opponent's Pokémon, but if its shaky accuracy bothers you, you can opt for Substitute. Hidden Power Rock can be used to hit Flying-types such as Swellow. Ancientpower is used for the same purpose, but has the possibility of granting you a boost in every stat. Finally, Earth Power allows you to hit common switch-ins such as Steelix.

Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 120 HP / 136 Spe
Nature: Modest (+SpA, -Atk)

- Psychic
- Hidden Power Rock
- Earth Power
- Explosion / Signal Beam

With Choice Specs, Lunatone immediately poses a threat to your opponent. STAB Psychic always proves powerful coming off a 475 SpA stat, and it will hurt anything that doesn't resist it or is immune to it. Hidden Power Rock is once again for coverage and will dismantle most Flying-types in the UU environment. Earth Power is a must on this set as it allows you to easily KO Pokémon such as Steelix and Probopass. For the last slot, Explosion is the preferred option, allowing you to simply Explode on targets that your other 3 moves cannot handle, such as Claydol.

http://www.pokesho.com/img_icon_us/i_lunatone.gifLead@ Focus Sash / Wide Lens
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
Nature: Jolly (+Spe, -SpA)

- Hypnosis
- Trick Room / Rain Dance
- Explosion
- Stealth Rock

A bit gimmicky, but perfectly viable nonetheless. The idea of this set is to use Hypnosis on the first turn, hopefully disabling the other Pokémon before it hits Lunatone. Since putting the opponent's Pokémon to Sleep is the priority of this set, one can opt for Wide Lens instead of Focus Sash. After the opponent's Pokémon is asleep, Lunatone can proceed to use either Trick Room or Rain Dance on the switch. Trick Room is the ideal choice, as it allows Lunatone to outspeed a lot of Pokémon. Once you have set up Trick Room, Lunatone will easily be able to set up Stealth Rock, and later switch out or simply Explode. Rain Dance is an obvious choice for Lunatone to set up Rain, but there are generally better Pokémon that fit this role.

http://www.pokesho.com/img_icon_us/i_lunatone.gifDual Screen@ Light Clay
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 120 Def / 136 Spe
Nature: Bold (+Def, -Atk)

- Light Screen
- Reflect
- Earth Power
- Ice Beam / Stealth Rock

This set works similarly to Azelf, Uxie, and Deoxys-S. Using this set in tandem with Pokémon like Belly Drum Poliwrath is ideal, as it allows them to set up much easier and possibly sweep. Reflect and Light Screen, obviously, are used on this set to support the team. Light Clay prolongs the effects of the Defensive screens, allowing for more set up time. Earth Power is a must on this set to allow Lunatone to beat Pokémon such as Ninetales and Toxicroak. Ice Beam works well when used with Earth Power to grant Lunatone impressive type coverage. Stealth Rock is another option for this set, as you'll have several turns to set it up while your opponent's attacks are doing half damage. Stealth Rock also destroys Focus Sashes, which can possibly stop your other Pokémon from sweeping.

Taunt will make life a lot harder for Lunatone, but luckily, almost all Taunters in the UU tier can be taken care of by a combination of Earth Power and Ice Beam.

http://www.pokesho.com/img_icon_us/i_lunatone.gifSubSalacTone@ Salac Berry
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 252 Spe / 4 Def
Nature: Modest (+SpA, -Atk)
IVs: 30 HP

- Substitute
- Calm Mind
- Earth Power
- Hidden Power Rock / Ice Beam

This works much like any Salac Berry user in OU: Either come in on a Pokémon that is scared of Lunatone or force a switch on a Pokémon that is stuck on a Choiced Ground move (it will usually be the latter of the two). Then, simply use Substitute; after that, Calm Mind while they break your Substitute. Keep using Substitute until you’re at 25% health or less. From there, Lunatone will have enough Speed and power to have a chance to sweep.

Other Options:

Lunatone learns many moves that can damage usual counters, such as Grass Knot and Shadow Ball. Lunatone learns Charge Beam and Cosmic Power, but in the long run they are inferior to Calm Mind. The Calm Mind or Choice Specs set can be used on a Trick Room team, although, it is very gimmicky.

Opinion:

Lunatone definitely deserves credit for being a well-balanced Pokémon. Decent stats and movepool, combined with Calm Mind and a plethora of Baton Passing options make Lunatone a very helpful team player.

I'm not sure if it's worth adding but Lunatone can also be played in UU SS teams.
