Mawile

Summary:

Most Used Mawile Set:

Even with somewhat low stats, Mawile is a pretty good pokemon for it has the ability to baton pass out some very good stat uppers, or even take out pokemon like Golem and perhaps Tyranitar with very little difficulty. With stockpile, swords dance, and iron defense all at its disposal, Mawile makes a baton passer perfect to pass to fast - yet perhaps frail sweepers who want a little extra power in their attack - +2 attack extra power, or who need the defense from stockpile or iron defense. Also, with the new move tutors (and, surprisingly enough, naturally) in Platinum, Mawile gets the move iron head. Those who enjoy using flinch hax pokemon such as Togekiss will find that, while Mawile doesnt get the serene grace flinch bonus, STAB on iron head (with a decent 206 attack) allows Mawile to put up quite a fight against a bit of the UU tier.

Usual Counters:

With a base speed of only about 50 and Mawile's major weakness to three common types - fire, ground, and fighting, it isnt really that hard to counter. In UU, Rapidash, Azumarril, and Quagsire are some of the many pokemon that take Mawile down with ease, and one (preferably special, not physical) attack should easily take Mawile down if it is weak to that type.

Types of Teams Pokemon Is Used On:

Mawile works well on teams that need support with baton passing, and effectively makes Mawile the UU version of Celebi; well, a baton pass Celebi, at least. Mawile makes a decent physical attacker as well (whether choice banded, or not) and can be used as (with thunderpunch) a counter for Gyarados, who cant touch Mawile without earthquake.

Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP, 252 speed, 4 defense
Nature: Carful (+special defense, - special attack)/Impish (+defense, - special attack)

-Baton Pass
-Swords Dance/Iron Defense
-Stockpile/Swords Dance/Iron Defense
-Iron Head

The beforementioned baton passing set which Mawile uses perfectly is the above set. It can be tweaked here and there to specialize in offense or defense (though it is not recommended to have both stockpile and iron defense in the same moveset). This set can turn to a slightly more aggressive side with the use of salac berry over leftovers - trade the 6% health increase for a possible speed bonus which can be baton passed.

With a wide variety of stat upping moves, Mawile is a great baton passer - rivaling Celebi, to some respect, though Mawile's baton passing allows it to increase defenses a bit better than Celebi.

-Thunderpunch
-Swords Dance/Sucker Punch
-Ice Punch
-Iron Head/Brick Break

A great little set here, this moveset goes for an all out attacking way of things. The hold items (shuka berry, occa berry, and expert belt) are all preferred in my view to say, a life orb, as the increased damage is simply to much for Mawile to take, especially since due to its low speed, if the opponent brings in a sweeper on Mawile, it is likely to have to take one attack.

The moveset allows it to counter Tyranitar, Aerodactyle, Salamence, Gyarados, and a mound of other OU threats - showing that Mawile is perfectly playable in the OU tier as well as, say, UU. Sucker punch even allows Mawile to get an attack in on unsuspecting ghost types, such as Rotom (any form really), Dusknoir, and Spiritomb. Iron head gets STAB giving it a slightly higher power than brick break, but which of those you choose is a matter of preference.

Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP, 252 attack, 4 speed/252 HP 252 speed 4 attack
Nature: Adamant (+attack, - special attack)/Jolly (+speed, - special attack)

-Sucker Punch/Iron Head
-Ice Punch
-Thunderpunch
-Fire Blast/Fire Fang/Brick Break

The most aggresive Mawile set, the choice band attacker is a for to be reckoned with. This set also includes the possible introduction of fire blast or fire fang, which finally gives Mawile the ability to score an attack on steel/flying, or steel/bug types, such as Scizor (who now dies instantly to fire fang) and skarmory, who still gets KOed pretty easily by fire fang, and 2-3HKOed by fire blast. Aggron and Glaceon in UU also face major trouble from fire fang.

Iron head is strongly recommended over sucker punch due to one simple problem: if you get locked into sucker punch, the opponent can use stat upping moves until you either switch, or run out of powerpoints for sucker punch, so note the sucker punch is quite a risky move to use.

With three elemental moves (two punches and one fang) typing shouldnt be that much of a problem, though this set might have to require quite a bit of switching, as any moveset using a choice item does. This is the most physically powerful of the movesets for Mawile.

Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP, 176 defense, 80 special defense
Nature: Carful (+special defense, - special attack)

-Protect
-Toxic
-Stockpile/Sing
-Spit Up/Swallow/Sing/Iron Head

An all out staller, to say the least. This set effectively can outstall many other UU stallers (though it doesnt do to well in OU). It gets completely screwed by taunt though, which is why you may want to have spit up or iron head in the moveset. The toxic/protect/stockpile strategy works pretty well, though it relies on the ability for Mawile to take a few attacks.

Spit up and/or swallow are optional moves on this set, and if you use either of them, it is obviously required that you use stockpile as well. Spit up works well for offense, while swallow is a bit less aggresive, healing you rather than doing damage to the opponent.

This moveset is just sadly screwed up to easily by common attacks like taunt, so it isnt that recommended, outclassed by many other stallers.

Other Options:

The stall set certainly needs a little work, and a stockpile set is probably a decent possibilty, as Mawile learns both spit up and swallow in addition to stockpile. Other than that, it would be possible to get some sort of special attacker/stat decreaser Mawile in, with fake tears, icy wind, and such. Mawile thankfully has a decent movepool for attack, though there arent really many team support options for it other than baton passing.

Opinion:

Mawile isnt that bad a pokemon, but it isnt really that good either. It is sorely lacking stat wise, and has only a few real useable options competitively. On the other hand, it isnt a bad pokemon to use as a baton passer and such, and is somewhat useable in BL/UU/NU tiers and such. Not my favorite pokemon, but certainly useable.

Some capitalization errors here and there, some comma misconceptions at times; but all in all, this was a great analysis! Thanks for this marvelous contribution ^_^. I'll fix it up tomorrow.
