Hitmontop

Summary:

Most Used Hitmontop Set:

I commonly see this useful little UU pokemon used for rapid spinning, which to tell the truth, it works somewhat well as. Other than that, Hitmontop also plays well in a role of a physically offensive - or defensive pokemon. In this respect, offensive Hitmontops often are seen with moves like bulk up and close combat. Fake out includes one of the moves that Hitmontop is rarely seen without, though it doesnt really accomplish that much, especially with low attack effort values.

Usual Counters:

Surprisingly enough, there are very few UU pokemon that can counter Hitmontop solidly and consistently, the few being Spiritomb, Weezing, and possibly Claydol. On the other hand, assuming that the Hitmontop in question is lacking a ground type move, pretty much any poison type pokemon will counter it, such as anything from the Nidoran lines, and Toxicroak being some examples in UU. Sadly, in OU, anything with levitate easily counters Hitmontop.

Types of Teams Pokemon Is Used On:

Hitmontop easily excells in the job of rapid spinning, though it is slightly outclassed by Donphan. It does very well in teams that are in need of a bulky rapid spinner, or bulky sweeper.

In Depth:

http://www.pokemonelite2000.com/sprites/dpmfa/dpmfa237.pngSpin, Spin, Spin!@ Shed Shell
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP, 180 speed, 76 defense
Nature: Impish (+defense, -special attack)/Adamant (+attack, - special attack)

-Rapid Spin
-Close Combat
-Fake Out/Toxic/Stone Edge
-Stone Edge/Fake Out/Toxic/Forsight

The most commonly seen rapid spinner moveset for Hitmontop, this moveset is sadly rendered almost completely useless against ghost types, with the exception of either stone edge or toxic. On the other hand, assuming the opponent has no spin blocker, this moveset can do very well, especially if the opponent has no spin blocker. With a decent hit point stat, and a greater defense stat, Hitmontop is actually able to absorb a few attacks and possibly put some status effect onto the opponent. It also has the nice ability to use fake out and stall out a turn.

This set wont even suffer that much from annoying defensively powerful OU pokemon, like Skarmory (to whom close combat will 2HKO). Not even ghost types can easily wall it, due to forsight. Other than that, this moveset can actually be annoying for opponents, who will find that with a great defense, Hitmontop can be very annoying to try to take down.

The final added bonus of this moveset is the item that i strongly recommend: the shed shell. It makes it virtually impossible to revenge kill Hitmontop, as it can scurry away from any trap - be it a move or an ability.

http://www.pokemonelite2000.com/sprites/dpmfa/dpmfa237.pngTechnical Attack!!@ Life Orb
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 attack 240 HP, 16 speed
Nature: Adamant (+attack, - special attack)

-Fake Out
-Close Combat
-Mach Punch/Quick Attack/Bullet Punch
-Aerial Ace/Pursuit

This moveset is centered around one of Hitmontops' abilities: technician. This increases every move with a power of 60 or under by 50%. This is effectively getting a STAB bonus on any attack, so something simple, like quick attack can become a force to be reckoned with. With a wide variety of moves, a Hitmontop using this set can take down quite a few types with ease.

Fake out, just as a starting move is raised to 60 power rather than 40. Group the life orb's extra 30% damage on there, and you could be doing over 50% damage to your opponent, and they wont even have the ability to retaliate! Mach punch, quick attack, and bullet punch are all great moves to have, and you may even want to have two of them on the moveset, for wider type coverage. With technician, these three powerful priorety moves raise to a base power of 60, packing quite a punch, to say the least.

Other than that, the effort value set allows Hitmontop to outspeed max speed bases up to about 70 base speed, outspeeding enemies in UU quite easily, and managing to put up a bit of a fight in OU.

http://www.pokemonelite2000.com/sprites/dpmfa/dpmfa237.pngBulky!@ Leftovers
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 HP, 116 attack, 136 special defense, 4 speed
Nature: Careful (+special defense - special attack)/Impish (+defense - special attack)

-Bulk Up
-Close Combat/Revenge/Hi Jump Kick/Earthquake
-Mach Punch/Bullet Punch/Sucker Punch/Forsight
-Stone Edge

This is, to say the least, one of the more bulky sets for Hitmontop. It's centered around the move, bulk up, which is effectively a curse that doesnt decrease your speed. With some careful planning, bulk up can put some serious power into Hitmontop's attack.

This Hitmontop set can effectively counter many of the main pokemon that wall Hitmontop. Bullet or sucker punch will both counter ghost types, limiting Rotom and Spiritombs' ability to wall Hitmontop. If you dont want either of those, forsight is another option, that will allow all Hitmontop's attacks to hit ghost types. Poison types wont be able to take an earthquake if you manage to get a bulk up or two, and even flying types will have some trouble, due to stone edge.

Overall, with some planning and prediction, this can be one of the most powerful movesets available for an offensive Hitmontop.

http://www.pokemonelite2000.com/sprites/dpmfa/dpmfa237.pngYour Choice!@ Choice Band/Choice Scarf
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 attack, 184 speed, 72 HP
Nature: Adamant (+attack, - special attack)/Jolly (+speed - special attack)

-Earthquake
-Close Combat
-Sucker Punch/Forsight
-Stone Edge/Bullet Punch/Aerial Ace

The most straightforward, physically powerful moveset for Hitmontop, the choice item moveset is only hampered by priorety moves, and can effectively blast through anything else. Due to the move choice, this moveset will result in almost nothing walling Hitmontop easily (the exception being Weezing).

Earthquake takes care of poison types, forsight and sucker punch send ghost types scurrying away (though note that sucker punch only works if the opponent is using an offensive move), stone edge, bullet punch, or aerial ace is your choice, and each one of them will take care of a different type. And then the final powerhouse move that is on virtually every moveset for Hitmontop: close combat. Close combat goes very well with choice items, as after a close combat, you will probably want to get Hitmontop off the field even if the opponent doesnt send in a pokemon that can easily defeat Hitmontop.

Other than that, this moveset is completely straightforward: hit the opponent as hard as you can and then get out of there.

Other Options:

Some sort of rest/talker would work well, with Hitmontops' high defense stat, and some sort of moveset involving agility/endure/revenge would probably work well. As a matter of fact, endure provides quite a few options, including edeavor (in addition to revenge). Sub/counter movesets could also work pretty well if used right.

Hitmontop is a somewhat straightforward pokemon though, so note that these options are probably more of gimmick sets than actual useable movesets.

Opinion:

Hitmontop is a pretty strong pokemon for UU. Sure, it doesnt have the best base stats (Hitmontop's base stats total 455), but it seems to be a strong rapid spinner as well as a fairly powerful attacker. Hitmontop seems to good for its tier, and i have often seen it played well in OU.

Hitmontop is a really nice pokemon to use, to say the least, with powerful attacking moves, as well as some very good defensive stats.

You should mentione forsight in your analysis seeing as that is one of the common moves run with it. Or you could also put it on other options. Otherwise nice job

i am cool

Yeah a Foresight set is an awesome option for taking care of Rotom.

Also, I'm too tired to fix the capitalization errors...can you please just capitalize every moves' name? 'Rapid Spin', not 'rapid spin' etc.

youre using things like "I". youre not supposed to talk about YOUR personal experiences or anything about you for that matter. you have to inform everyone else. ill edit this later.

Im new to this and all, but is this analysis for OU? because the speed evs were for TTars but that is completely pointless in UU where Top resides. If not, the ev spread can be updated and as everyone said, add foresight

i am cool

Both of the above users are correct, and you should fix this analysis with my suggestions. I'm sorry but I'm not in the mood to waste three hours editing stuff that should've been well done in the first place.
