Summary:

Most Used Mawile Set:

Even with somewhat low stats, Mawile is a pretty good Pokémon, for it has the ability to Baton Pass some very good boosts, or even take out Pokémon like Golem and perhaps Tyranitar with very little difficulty. With Stockpile, Swords Dance, and Iron Defense at its disposal, Mawile makes a perfect Baton Passer. Also, with the new move tutors, Mawile gets the move Iron Head. Those who enjoy using flinch hax Pokémon such as Togekiss will find that, while Mawile doesn’t get the Serene Grace flinch bonus, STAB on Iron Head (with a decent 206 Attack stat) allows Mawile to put up quite a fight against a bit of the UU tier.

Usual Counters:

With a base Speed of only about 50 and Mawile's major weakness to three common types - Fire, Ground, and Fighting - it really isn’t that hard to counter. In UU, Rapidash, Azumarril, and Quagsire are some of the many Pokémon that take Mawile down with ease, and one (preferably Special, not Physical) attack should easily take Mawile down if it is weak to that attacl.

Types of Teams Mawile Is Used On:

Mawile works well on teams that need support with Baton Passing, and effectively makes Mawile the UU version of Celebi; well, a Baton Pass Celebi, at least. Mawile makes a decent Physical attacker as well (whether Choice Banded or not) and can be used as (with Thunder Punch) a counter for Gyarados, who can’t touch Mawile without Earthquake.

In Depth:

Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Spe / 4 Def
Nature: Carful (+SpD, -SpA) Or Impish (+Def, -SpA)

- Baton Pass
- Swords Dance / Iron Defense
- Stockpile / Swords Dance / Iron Defense
- Iron Head

Mawile can be tweaked here and there to specialize in offense or defense (though it is not recommended to have both Stockpile and Iron Defense on the same moveset). This set can turn into a slightly more aggressive side with the use of Salac Berry over Leftovers - trade the 6% health increase for a possible Speed bonus which can be Baton Passed.

With a wide variety of stat upping moves, Mawile is a great Baton Passer - rivaling Celebi, to some respect, though Mawile can increase Defenses a bit better than Celebi.

Nature: Adamant (+Atk, -SpA) Or Impish (+Def, -SpA)

- Thunder Punch
- Swords Dance / Sucker Punch
- Ice Punch
- Iron Head / Brick Break

A great little set here, this moveset goes for an all out attacking way of things. The hold Items (Shuca Berry, Occa Berry, and Expert Belt) are all preferred in my view to say, a Life Orb, as the increased damage is simply too much for Mawile to take, especially since due to its low Speed, if the opponent brings in a sweeper on Mawile, it is likely to have to take one attack.

The moveset allows it to counter Tyranitar, Aerodactyl, Salamence, Gyarados, and a mound of other OU threats - showing that Mawile is perfectly playable in the OU tier as well as UU. Sucker Punch even allows Mawile to attack unsuspecting Ghost-types, such as Rotom (any forme really), Dusknoir, and Spiritomb. Iron Head gets STAB giving it a slightly higher power than Brick Break, but which of those you choose is a matter of preference.

Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe Or 252 HP / 252 Spe / 4 Atk
Nature: Adamant (+Atk, -SpA) Or Jolly (+Spe, -SpA)

- Iron Head / Sucker Punch
- Ice Punch
- Thunder Punch
- Fire Blast / Fire Fang / Brick Break

The most aggresive Mawile set, the Choice Band attacker is a force to be reckoned with. This set also includes the possible introduction of Fire Blast or Fire Fang, which finally gives Mawile the ability to score an attack on Steel and Bug-types, such as Scizor (who now dies instantly to Fire Fang) and Skarmory. Glaceon in UU also faces major trouble from Fire Fang.

Iron Head is strongly recommended over Sucker Punch due to one simple reason: if you get locked into Sucker Punch, the opponent can use stat upping moves until you either switch, or run out of powerpoints for Sucker Punch, so note that Sucker Punch is quite a risky move to use.

With three elemental moves (two punches and one fang) type coverage shouldn’t be that much of a problem.

Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 176 Def / 80 SpD
Nature: Carful (+SpD, -SpA)

- Protect
- Toxic
- Stockpile / Sing
- Spit Up / Swallow / Sing / Iron Head

An all out staller, to say the least. This set can effectively outstall many other UU stallers (though it doesn’t do to well in OU). It is shut down by Taunt though, which is why you may want to have Spit Up or Iron Head on the moveset. The Toxic / Protect / Stockpile strategy works pretty well, though it isn’t that reliable.

Spit Up and/or Swallow are optional moves on this set, and if you use either of them, it is obviously required that you use Stockpile as well. Spit Up works well for offense, while Swallow is a bit less aggresive, healing you rather than doing damage to the opponent.

This moveset is just sadly defeated too easily by common attacks like Taunt, so it isn’t recommended.

Other Options:

It would be possible to try Mawile with Fake Tears, Icy Wind, and such.

Opinion:

Mawile isn’t that bad a Pokémon, but it isn’t really that good either. It is lacking stat wise, and has only a few real useable options competitively. On the other hand, it isn’t a bad Pokémon to use as a Baton Passer, and is somewhat useable in BL/UU/NU tiers. Not my favorite Pokémon, but certainly useable.
