Whiscash

Summary:

Most Used Set:

Whiscash is NU simply because Swampert, Tyranitar, Wailord and other pokemon of similar typing are just much better. Whiscash, however, does offer a good substitute to Swampert in the UU and NU metagame. Most people say that the main set to consider for Whiscash would be a standard set, however, using specific items and moves, the "Offensive Fish" set brings out the best potential in Whiscash. With 420 attack when holding a choice band, whiscash has the power to do serious damage to the foe, closely matching the power of Tyranitar. Moves such as waterfall and earthquake are extremely potent, not only because of the attack stat, but because of the STAB that goes with it.

Usual Counters:

This pokemon is easy to counter. With a water/ground typing, anything that has a grass move will deal serious damage on it. Any flying / bug pokemon also has an advantage, as its able to counter any ground attacks dealt by Whiscash. To counter the Choice band set, any physical wall such as Leafeon that is not weak to ground is a viable option.

Types of Teams Pokemon Is Used On:

Whiscash is a good pokemon to use on an NU offensive team. Even though it has high HP, its not meant to be a wall, due to its low defense and special defense stats. With 110 base HP, Whiscash is able to afford a few hits, and so, can be used on teams were a Poison, Steel, or Rock pokemon is used by the opponent. Whiscash is a viable counter for the Rock and Steel types of NU, and it is, therefore, convenient against these slow and bulky pokemon.

In Depth:

Ability: Anticipation
EVs: 6HP, 252 Atk, 252 Speed.
Nature: Adamant

-Stone Edge
-Waterfall / Aqua Tail
-Earthquake
-ZenHeadbutt / Spark

Whiscash has potential to be the Tyranitar of NU. With a choice band in its fins, its able to do serious physical damage to the opponent, and together with STAB, can 1HKO even bulky opponents. Stone Edge is a great move for countering flying type pokemon, or any ice types that may attempt to wall Whiscash's waterfall attack. ZenHeadbutt is a useful option for countering Fighting type pokemon and Poison/Grass types such as Victreebel, whilst Spark also offers the ability for Whiscash to deal some damage to water type pokemon.

With a Choice Band and maximum Effort Values in attack and speed, Whiscash is able to outspeed many pokemon, and deal a great amount of damage. The attack boost allows it to counter bulky opponents, both physical and special with ease.

Earthquake, noteably Wishcash's best move, can easily be countered by switch-ins, so Stone Edge or Spark, are vital for countering flying type foes.

Ability: Anticipation
EVs: 220 HP, 110 Atk, 180 Def
Nature: Brave (Adamant if not using Icebeam)

-Stone Edge / IceBeam
-Earthquake / Waterfall
-Rest
-Sleep Talk

This set deals with the ability to rest and annoy the foe. With 180 EVs in Defense, Whiscash becomes a physical wall, and with Rest, it can recover its HP easily and annoy the opponent. The Lum Berry offers a 1 time "no fee" revival, enabling an instant revival with the option for you to continue attacking. Sleep talk allows you to use rest for an infinate number of times, whilst still being able to attack the opponent.

Other options for this set include the use of Icebeam, which is particularly useful for countering grass types, whilst Stone edge provides coverage against flying types. Earthquake or waterfall, again, with STAB can do serious damage to the opponent.

Whiscash's Anticipation ability provides a useful warning to you, allowing you to detect potential 1HKOs. When that happens.... bail out!

Ability: Anticipation
EVs: 6 HP, 252 SpAtk, 252 Speed
Nature: Modest

-IceBeam / Blizzard
-Surf / Hydropump
-Hidden Power: Electric / Dark / Fire / Ground
-Toxic / Hydropump

A special attacking Whiscash is rare, and unexpected. With 414 Special attack after choice specs, you have the power to deal serious damage to physical walls, who are expecting physcial attacks. Blizzard, or Icebeam for accuracy is an excellent option for countering flying type opponents and grass type opponents, which are Whiscash's main counters. The Hidden Power allows for futher coverage across many types, and the toxic element is useful for dealing damage to Chansey. Hydropump deals the greatest amount of damage. With STAB and with 414 SpAtk, it is almost certainly going to 1HKO Aggron.

Hidden Power fire is useful for countering steel type foes, as well as keeping the protection from ice and bug type pokemon, which may attempt to counter whiscash.

The 252 EVs in speed are important, as it allows Whiscash to move first against most NU pokemon. Even with high HP, the poor defense and SpDef stat makes it vulernable to attacks.

Ability: Anticipation
EVs: 6 HP, 252 Atk, 252 Def
Nature: Adamant

-Waterfall / Aquatail
-Earthquake
-Tickle / Rest
-Amnesia/ Thrash

This set is a standard set for Whiscash. Without the choice items, you are free to use what you like when you like. Aquatail, or Waterfall for accuracy, provide a decent attack. With STAB and 280 attack, Whiscash can do some good damage to NU pokemon, and with 252EVs in defense, it's able to take a few hits.

Amnesia is a useful move for increasing the special defense stat, and once setup, allows Whiscash to become a wall. With Rest, Whiscash can continue setting up its special defense.

Thrash provides coverage against all types, and tickle is useful for lowing the opponents attack and defense stat in battle.

Other Options:

Whiscash is the Swampert of NU, and has the ability to inflict serious damage to the foe. With 110 base power HP, it can also act as a wall and annoy the opponent. Although Whiscash's Attack and Special Attack are very similar, it has a poor movepool, and so other special attacking options are not feasible. A possible status affliction set can be made with Spark and toxic; however are very similar to what's stated here.

Opinion:

Whiscash is overshadowed by Quagsire and Swampert, and so has never found its place in OU. In the NU metagame, its particularly useful though, and its decent typing allows it to counter many UU pokemon.
