Summary:

Most Used Vileplume Set:

Vileplume is a weird, yet powerful Pokémon for the Under Used tier. Its most used and most reliable set is the "Elect-Plume" set, which allows you to take advantage of Vileplume's Chlorophyll Ability, and outspeed most, if not all, Pokémon. With 252 EVs and the x2 Speed factor from Chlorophyll, Vileplume is left with a 436 Speed stat, capable of outspeeding Electrode, nearly all OU Pokémon, and even some Pokémon with Choice Scarfs. Thanks to its base 100 Special Attack stat, Vileplume is then able to seriously damage the foe, or inflict Sleep, thanks to a 75% accurate Sleep Powder.

Usual Counters:

In the OU metagame, Skarmory and Heatran are the biggest threats, as they are both extremely resistant to its Grass moves and possess an immunity to its Poison moves. Skarmory's Drill Peck will almost certainly OHKO Vileplume, and Heatran's scorching Fire Blast will destroy Vileplume’s light, flower-like body. The best counter for it in the UU metagame is Cradily, thanks to its high Special Defense and typing. It is immune to Leech Seed and thanks to its Rock-type, Hidden Power Fire has very little effect.

In UU, Muk and Swalot also have good Special Defense and have a good resistance to most of Vileplume's attacks, so in those scenarios, Vileplume does not stand a chance.

Types of Teams Vileplume Is Used In:

Vileplume is generally used in offensive teams. Due to its high base Special Attack stat, it’s a useful Pokémon for sweeping in the UU metagame. Vileplume can also be used as a status annoyer, aiding the setup of other Pokémon. Thanks to its relatively even base stats, Vileplume can also become a Physical Pokémon, and as its movepool allows for such moves as Swords Dance, together with a status move, you are able to set up and sweep the opponent’s team.

Nature: Modest (+SpA, -Atk) Or Timid (+Spe, -Atk)

- Sunny Day
- Sleep Powder / Stun Spore
- Solarbeam
- Sludge Bomb / Hidden Power Fire / Hidden Power Rock

Although Vileplume has only base 50 Speed stat, it has the special Ability: Chlorophyll, with doubles its Speed in sunlight. In order to take advantage of this, Vileplume needs to use Sunny Day, which will not only double its Speed, but also allow first turn SolarBeam; this enables Vileplume to attack first in almost all situations, thanks to a huge 436 Speed stat, which outspeeds a 252 EVed Hasty Electrode! Together with STAB and 299 Special Attack, Vileplume is able to seriously damage Pokémon and can potentially sweep through Suicune, Rhyperior, and other Physical walls. The Heat Rock Item extends the effectiveness of Sunny Day to 8 turns instead of 5, allowing you more time to attack at maximum Speed.

Sludge Bomb or Hidden Power Fire / Hidden Power Rock give Vileplume greater coverage against types your opponent may use. Sludge Bomb is useful particularly on other Grass-types, whilst Hidden Power Fire covers both Grass and Ice-types, which are common countering types for this bullet mushroom. Alternatively, you may use Hidden Power Rock to cover Ice and Flying-types, making a good Gyarados counter.

Stun Spore or Sleep Powder allows Vileplume to take advantage of the opponent, and will force the opponent to switch, giving time for it to set up Sunny Day. It is best to use a Modest Nature on this set, so your attacks are much stronger, and thanks to Chlorophyll, you'll still outspeed most Pokémon, thanks to 398 Speed.

Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 6 Spe
Nature: Adamant

- Swords Dance
- Drain Punch
- Razor Leaf
- Sleep Powder / Stun Spore / Body Slam

Vileplume has a poor Physical attacking move pool, and so there aren't any strong attacks on this set; however, thanks to Swords Dance and a status move, you are able set up a Swords Dance, and then take out the foe. Drain Punch is extremely useful for claiming back lost HP. The 252 EVs in Attack and the Adamant Nature give Vileplume 284 Attack, which is useful for countering Special walls such as Cresselia, Milotic ,and Blissey. Drain Punch also allows you to do severe damage to Blissey, whilst restoring your HP.

Sleep Powder or Stun Spore is necessary for the setting up of Swords Dance. Thanks to Stun Spore's accurate Paralysis infliction, Vileplume is able to Paralyze the opponent, and hopefully do decent damage later. Razor Leaf provides STAB and coverage for all major Water, Rock, and Ground-types.

Body Slam is a viable option for Vileplume, as not only does it attack the foe, but it also inflicts Paralysis, giving time for you to set up Swords Dance.

Ability: Chlorophyll

- Substitute
- Leech Seed
- Sludge Bomb
- Stun Spore / Body Slam / HP Rock

This set is rarely seen on Wi-Fi, as Leech Seed is not legally obtainable, unless from a Japanese Pokémon Center. Thanks to Vileplume's solid Defense stats, it’s able to wall both Physical and Special attacks, and thanks to Substitute and Stun Spore, it can become very annoying. Sludge Bomb is a must for countering Grass Pokémon your opponent may switch-in. The idea of this set is to set up Substitute and Leech Seed. With the Big Root Item, Vileplume gains an extra 30% health from the opponent, and so recovers what was lost in this setup.

This set is easily countered by Taunt, and so Body Slam could be an option, or you could switch Stun Spore for another move altogether. Hidden Power Rock provides realistic coverage against Flying and Ice-types, which are extremely likely switch-ins.

Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 HP / 50 Def / 150 SpA / 52 SpD
Nature: Modest (+SpA, -Atk)

- Energy Ball
- Sludeg Bomb
- Aromatheraphy / Leech Seed
- Stun Spore / Sleep Powder

This set is not weak to Physical or Special moves, so it is capable of withstanding any threat, therefore, fooling the opponent. The 252 EVs in HP allow maximum room for damage, whilst the EVs in Defense and Special Defense help Vileplume withstand hits from both types of attacks. Its Modest Nature and Special Attack EVs allow it to, again, inflict decent damage to the foe, and together with STAB, Energy Ball can 2HKO Suicune, or OHKO Rhyperior.

Aromatheraphy is a useful move for healing what your opponent may have done to you, but if unnecessary, Leech Seed can be used to annoy the opponent and cause a switch, where you can then inflict Sleep or Paralysis using Stun Spore or Sleep Powder, which, as a result, solves the Speed problem Vileplume has.

Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 6 Def

- Sunny Day
- Solarbeam
- Synthesis
- Hidden Power Fire

This set takes full advantage of Sunny Day. The Sun allows Vileplume to take full advantage of Synthesis. The Heat Rock, again, allows the Sun to last for 8 turns, giving you enough time to damage the foe.

Sunny Day also boosts Fire-type moves, and so Hidden Power Fire is slightly stronger, providing a greater defense against Ice, Steel, and Grass-types. The most important factor of this set is the ability for Vileplume to sweep the foe. With 328 Special Attack, STAB, and SolarBeam being Base Power 120, this mushroom can sweep Suicune, Rhyperior, Whiscash, Swampert, and any other Grass-weak foes.

Other Options:

Vileplume has plenty of other options spanning from its impressive movepool. Unlike Venusaur, it also learns Stun Spore, and so can impose Paralysis on the foe, overcoming its Speed let down. It is able to use Giga Drain and Leech Seed, which give this Pokémon a chance to heal, and as a result, set up for a possible team sweep. One of its later moves, Drain Punch, allows Vileplume to heal and do serious damage to Blissey, which is a common foe to encounter in the OU metagame.

Opinion:

Vileplume is an amazing Pokémon, and it’s suprising how it’s classified as NU. Thanks to its impressive movepool and reasonable base stats, you can just about do anything with this mushroom Pokémon. The only thing that lets it down is its poor typing, making it weak to 4 extremely common types: Fire, Flying, Psychic, and Ice, which seriously pose a threat to its sweeping prowess.

Lastly, the best part about Vileplume is its Ability which doubles its Speed in the Sun. This enables it to be fast, even outspeeding some Ninjask. Together with 100 base Special Attack, this mushroom can offensively damage the opponent to the core.
