Summary:

Most Used Set:

The most used set would be the Parafusion set. It's other sets are usually outclassed. Thunder Wave and Confuse Ray are interesting moves on a Normal type pokemon, and Stantler puts them to good use.

Usual Counters:

Mismagius can come in on a Normal attack and set up using Substitute and Calm Mind. Since Mismagius is faster, it can set up a Substitute and wont be affected by any of Stantler's moves barring bite, which they rarely carry anyway. Steel and Rock types can
take any of Stantler's hits. Burn or Paralysis can cripple Stantler badly. Due to Stantler's below average defenses, anything faster than it can pose an immediate threat to it.

Types of Teams Pokemon Is Used In:

Stantler is normally used as a Support Pokemon on Balanced teams, where it works best. He can also be uesd on Offensive Teams using the Choice set.

In Depth:

Parafusion

Stantler @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe
~ Thunder Wave
~ Confuse Ray
~ Return / Stomp
~ Earthquake / Bite

The EVs are sorted to give Stantler as much survivability and power as possible. It doesn't need much speed because of Thunder Wave. Return is its STAB attack, but Stomp can be used to go with the Parafusion. Earthquake is the last move and is mostly filler. Bite could be used over it to hit those Ghost types, mainly Mismagius and Rotom who are immune to Earthquake as well. Intimidate is the preferred ability, but Frisk is also usable.

Dual Screen

Stantler @ Leftovers / Light Clay
Ability: Intimidate
Nature: Jolly
EVs: 196 HP / 60 Atk / 252 Spe
~ Reflect
~ Light Screen
~ Hypnosis
~ Body Slam / Earthquake

The idea of this set is to use Hypnosis to sleep an opposing Pokemon, and set up Light Screen and Reflect. Intimidate can help Stantler survive a hit to let it set up, or to force a switch to give Hypnosis an extra shot at hitting if it misses the first time. Body Slam provides a nice 30% Paralysis rate, but Earthquake can be used instead to hit Steel and Rock types hard.

Choiced Deer

Stantler @ Choice Band / Choice Scarf
Ability: Intimidate
Nature: Jolly / Adamant
EVs: 252 Atk / 40 Def / 216 Spe
~ Return
~ Earthquake
~ Sucker Punch / Hypnosis
~ Zen Headbutt / Hypnosis

Stantlar's attack with a Choice Band and Jolly nature reaches an impressive 433. Return is it's most powerful attack and gets STAB. Earthquake is to take care of Rock and Steel types that are barely scratched by Return. Sucker Punch can OHKO offensive rotom, and can finish off faster opponents. Zen Headbutt is Stantler's best way of handling Weezing, Nidoking, Nidoqueen, and the other of the many Poison types in UU. Hypnosis can go over either Sucker Punch or Zen Headbutt if wanted. If you decide to ues Choice Scarf, Adamant is the preferred nature, with a simple 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe EV spread.

Other Options

Stantler has access to Attract, which can be used with Thunder Wave and/or Confuse Ray to give the opponent a small chance of hitting back. Trick Room can be used to help out your Teammates. Me First is a risky option, but it can work. Stantler also has a decent base 85 Special Attack and the ability to use Calm Mind, with a few Special attacks such as Energy Ball, Psychic, Thunderbolt, Shadow Ball, and Hidden Power. Too bad its only Special STAB moves are Hyper Beam and Hidden Power Normal. Toxic can be used, although his other status inducing moves are prefered. Double Edge can be used over Return for a stronger STAB attack, but the recoil usually isnt worth it. Stantler can also perform a bit of a gimmick set of using only Protect and Last Resort, but thats very risky and usually better left to Ambipom due to higher speed and Fake Out.

Opinion

Stantler can be a very helpful Pokemon. Thunder Wave, Confuse Ray, and Hypnosis and really infuriate your opponent. Intimidate is always a good ability to have at your disposal. Normally the Choice set is outclassed by Tauros, but Stantler is still usable.
