Grumpig:

Summary:

Most Used Grumpig Set:

The most used set is probably the SubCM or Choice Specs set as both are Grumpig's most threatening sets and are very hard to counter. Trick can stop stallers such as Chansey, Steelix, and Spritomb. While SubCM can cause mayhem against those that try to stop it from sweeping.

Usual Counters:

Usual counters are Steel, Ghost, Dark, and Bug-types. Some common counters are Mismagius, Registeel, Steelix, Absol, Spiritomb, Rotom, etc. Mismagius can Calm Mind and be able to take it down one-on-one. Registeel is able to take Focus Blast or Hidden Power Fighting very well, however, it lacks power and Grumpig might be able to counter some Registeel sets with its Rest/Sleep Talk set. Steelix can inflict huge damage with Gyro Ball. Spiritomb can set up on Grumpig with Calm Mind and counter it.

Types of Teams Grumpig Is Used In:

This Pokémon is probably the best to use in an offensive team. Although, you should make sure your team is able to defeat the common types that counter Grumpig.

In Depth:

Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Nature: Timid (+Spe, -Atk)

- Substitute
- Calm Mind
- Psychic
- Focus Blast / Hidden Power Fighting / Grass Knot / Energy Ball / Signal Beam

With this spread Grumpig becomes very bulky and fast. With Base 80 Speed it can outspeed many Pokémon and have the capability to set up Calm Mind and Substitute very well. Psychic contributes STAB and can cause massive damage after two Calm Minds. One Calm Mind boosts its SpA to 326 and SpD to 384, making it very powerful and at the same time bulky. Focus Blast is for Pokémon that are resistant or immune to Psychic, like Dark and Steel-types. While Grass Knot and Energy Ball are viable for Grass/Ground/Rock-types, but Psychic can do just as much, so Focus Blast or Hidden Power Fighting (more PP and 100% accuracy) are more viable. Thick Fat also contributes to Grumpig’s bulkiness.

Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Nature: Timid (+Spe, -Atk) Or Modest (+SpA, -Atk)

- Calm Mind
- Psychic
- Grass Knot / Energy Ball / Shadow Ball
- Focus Blast / Hidden Power Fighting

This makes Grumpig a dangerous threat with its Speed and power. The given Speed EVs boost Grumpig's Speed to 284, which is enough to outspeed many UU threats. With the given EVs in SpA it reaches 279 SpA. This might not look so nice, but with Life Orb and one Calm Mind, Grumpig reaches a SpA of 544 and a Sp.Def of 384, which is very threatening. Psychic is for that exquisite STAB and massive sweeping. Shadow Ball for Ghost and Psychic-types that are able to resist Fighting and Psychic well.

Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Nature: Timid (+Spe, -Atk) Or Modest (+SpA, -Atk)

- Trick
- Psychic
- Focus Blast / Hidden Power Fighting
- Shadow Ball

Grumpig with Choice Specs can be deadly and at the same time tricky. Common Pokémon that try to ruin Choice Specs Grumpig's fun, like Chansey, can be Tricked Grumpig’s Choice Specs. The rest of the moves are self-explanatory.

http://www.pokesho.com/img_icon_us/i_grumpig.gifRest/Sleep Talk Grumpig@ Leftovers
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 252 HP / 136 Def / 120 SpD
Nature: Calm (+SpD, -Atk)

- Rest
- Sleep Talk / Calm Mind
- Psychic
- Toxic / Shadow Ball / Hidden Power Fighting / Calm Mind

You could use Toxic while being a threat with STAB Psychic and/or Calm Mind. You can also go with Shadow Ball and Psychic to formulate a spectacular combination. But, you aren't taking advantage of much with a weak 216 SpA. You can also use Sleep Talk to take advatange of Rest and at the same time Psychic and Shadow Ball to sweep. Since it isn't so great to have the Toxic and Psychic combination because Steel-types resist it very well, you can go with Hidden Power Fighting.

Other Options:

Charge Beam can also help contribute to sweeping, but isn't very powerful nor reliable. You can use a Counter/Mirror Coat set with its defenses as a good surprise factor. You can use Power Gem to hit Flying and Fire-types, like Moltres, which can immensely dent you. You can also try dual screens with Reflect and Light Screen. Grumpig also gets Thunder Wave and Trick Room for other means of support.

Opinion:

Grumpig can be a great threat to teams that are unable to stop it. Although, some Pokémon that defeat Grumpig at its own game exist, like Mismagius, Spiritomb, Clefable, and Slowbro. It still is, however, the only Psychic-type in UU that can properly CM sweep and be able to handle its counters.
