Nice. Moving up in the world of being accepted as an art, are we, video games?
Across all its incarnations it's the best selling video of all time - by an awful lot (see especially the Mobile section on the list) - so you can't really deny that it had an impact. As the article says, it's a "cultural icon." Same for Warcraft, though considering that basically all MMOs since then have baiscally tried to out-WoW WoW you could probably argue that it basically gave birth to the MMO as we know it.
Tbh I kind of rather their inaugural class was more about video games that revolutionized video games - Pong, Super Mario Bros. maybe Tetris, I think Doom did something technologically but I don't remember - than video games that revolutionized any specific genre or concept. Because then where do you draw the line?
- Legend of Zelda: Action/Adventure
- Portal: First Person Puzzle
- Mario Kart 64: Kart Racer
- Final Fantasy (probably 7): J/RPG
- Grand Theft Auto: Open World Sandbox
- Warcraft: MMO
- Warcraft: butt of most gaming jokes from the last decade
- Pokémon: Multiplayer
- Minecraft: User-created mods
- Minecraft: being Minecraft
- Super Mario 64, Jumping Flash, some other things, idk: 3D Platformer
- ad infinitum
Can't wait to see what they do next year, though. Also I think think this place is going to be a mandatory pilgrimage for me at least once or twice.

also doom was arguably the first major mainstream 3D FPS. Quake and Unreal came from the popularity of Doom, which gave us gems like Goldeneye
