Of course they were, especially if you picked Venusaur, since Agatha and Lance pretty much destroyed any chances of just soloing through the game with Venusaur, or using a team of one or two Pokemon for battle and a bunch of HM Slaves. Their levels were pretty high, so I remember having to grind a lot for them. The 4th Gen E4 is pretty hard, due to levels and Pokemon like Bertha's Hippowdon/Lucian's Bronzong, the latter being exceptionally hard to take down if you had no Fire Moves. 5th Gen E4 was pretty easy, for the most part.
I remember having a lot of trouble with the fr/lg e4. d/p was easy, i had a team of luxray, staraptar and infernape, and i basicly raped through the game with that. Platinum was a bit harder because i picked piplup, but stil doable. B/W was easy, knowing what type's gonnna come makes it a bit easier the first time, so i beat them with pokemon all in the 50's (i was expecting to get my *** kicked, but i wanted some exp, and this was the easy way to do it, but then i suddenly won..)
