Eh, I thought, since I'm here, I should post this.
Chapter 1: Unexpected Punishment
a dog Pokemon said, looking straight ahead at the mass of burned shrubbery before him. What used to be a gorgeous bush full of plump, juicy berries became nothing but a pile of burning leaves sitting under the dark remains of fruit skin.
I cant run away from this either
Everyone will know it was me. It was inevitable; he would be punished for this again just like all of the other incidents he had caused in the past few days. Every time, he had been very careful, and yet the accidents wouldnt stop. Sighing, he sat down and watched the small flames flicker as he awaited punishment.
NOOOOOOO!!!!! MY ORAN BERRY BUSH! a scream resounded into the sky as the voices owner appeared, running towards the burning circle where a blue berry bush once belonged. It was a short, green, four-legged Pokemon with a stubby tail. Each of its toes had a single nail and along its neck was a necklace of flower buds. Atop its head grew a large leaf that was longer than its small body. Its large, red eyes had become watery and small tears began to form along the bottom of them.
Why, oh why, did this have to happen? she asked quietly to herself, her voice shaking from sadness.
You got that right! Of all the places, why did it have to be here!?
The Pokemon sniffled, lamenting over her cherished berry bush. The dog Pokemon himself almost felt ready to cry, though, not exactly for the same reason... He knew that if she found the one who ruined her berry bush, it wouldnt be pretty; just thinking about what would happen made him shiver.
Fortunately enough, the leaf Pokemon had not noticed him yet. If he could just sneak away, maybe he could save himself before it was too late. All he would have to do is hide behind something until the leaf Pokemon left. Spotting a healthy bush nearby, he slowly edged towards it. But the ground was wet and muddy, and with each step, his paws sunk deeply into the mushy soil with a clump. Lifting his paws from the muck was even more challenging; the mud stuck to his paws, adding unwanted weight to his light steps. He could feel his nervousness building as seconds passed by and the leaf Pokemons sniffling became less frequent.
Thats enough tears for now
My sweet Oran Berry bush MUST be avenged! the leaf Pokemon declared wholeheartedly to herself, causing the dog Pokemon to flinch in surprise. He ran for the bush as fast as he could and hid himself behind its thick leaves.
I know youre there, Burn! COME OUT RIGHT NOW! the leaf Pokemon yelled loudly enough to make the dog Pokemons ears ring. Reluctantly, he walked away from the bushes and was just as soon face-to-face with the angry leaf Pokemon.
Cerise! he yelped in surprise.
What are y-
Dont give me that response! she interrupted, I was just on my way back from my daily walk when I notice my Oran Berry bush has turned into
into THAT! she yelled, gesturing with her leaf to the now ash-filled circle of burnt berries and leaves.
Im- Im sorry! I didnt me-AHHHHHHHHHH he shouted, watching as groups of small rocks began to float and hover around the leaf Pokemons body.
Oh, youll be sorry, all right! YOULL BE VERY SORRY! she shouted, her eyes now in the shape of an anger-filled glare.
With a swish of her leaf, the hovering rocks launched themselves towards the dog Pokemon. The dog Pokemon jumped around, dodging the rocks as best as he could.
Cant we talk about this!? the dog Pokemon shouted, now zigzagging to get away.
Stand still and Ill think about it! she responded, summoning larger rocks from the ground.
Sighing, the dog Pokemon stopped running and did as he was told. It was inevitable; he would be punished for this. Gritting his teeth, he approached the leaf Pokemon and forced his eyes shut. If todays punishment was to take Cerises Ancientpower head on, then so be it.
you actually did it, she gasped, raising her eyelids in surprise, but I cant forgive y-
Stop! another voice called from behind the angry Pokemon.
Surprised, the leaf Pokemon stopped her attack and turned her head around.
my Oran Berry bush
she said, once again indicating what was left of her berry bush, Its gone and its all HIS fault!
Then leave his punishment to our authorities. You should know by now that they have been giving him proper punishment.
Yes, youre right. But
And what if you had hit him with it? You could seriously injure him; someone as weak as him just cant handle it he said matter-of-factly.
Hey, what did you say!? the dog Pokemon retorted, walking past the leaf Pokemon for a better look.
The Pokemon that had just insulted him was a small lion. Most of its fur was blue except for an area under its neck and under its torso. A golden ring looped around each of its forelegs and tufts of fur grew out from below its cheeks and above its head. It had large, oval-shaped ears with a golden diamond, almost star-like shape on each. Its long, black tail had a star on the end of it and its golden eyes stared audaciously at the dog Pokemon.
I said youre weak, he repeated intrepidly, the sooner you realize this, the better off you will be.
The dog Pokemon gave him a glare. How do you know? You cant be that strong either, Star! he accused.
The lion Pokemon glared back for a moment, but quickly calmed himself and let out a sigh of pity.
I dont have time for this; I have errands to run outside of the village. Ill be back for you later, he said coolly, turning away.
Star, wait! the leaf Pokemon called just before the lion Pokemon left.
Did you say outside of the village?
You got it. I can leave the village whenever I want as long as I dont go too far, he confirmed, But that will change, too soon enough. Then I can finally realize my dream
Muttering the last sentence, he crouched down into a running position and dashed off at top speed, his figure quickly disappearing into the trees.
Show-off, the dog Pokemon criticized angrily.
Why does he have to be such a big jerk? he wondered aloud.
The leaf Pokemon started to laugh lightly.
Hey, whats so funny?
No-thing!~ the leaf Pokemon teased, still giggling.
Ignoring the leaf Pokemon, the dog Pokemon walked away towards the closest source of water. There was a circular lake in the center of the village, which supplied most of the plant life with food, nearby. Even though water was the dog Pokemons weakness, he enjoyed standing over the lakes edge to look at his reflection. He treaded through the muddy earth until he finally reached the sky blue water.
What he saw in his reflection was his usual, bright orange face with a cream-colored muzzle. His belly, tail and fur on his head were also cream-colored while his limbs were the same shade of orange as his face with black designs running across them. The dog Pokemons forepaws had two nails growing out of them and his fierce-looking eyes that resembled black pearls gave him a feeling of courage.
He lifted his head and looked at the village. It was noon and the luminous sun radiated with light, illuminating the lake. The waters surface reflected the light blue sky and clearly depicted a small group of fluffy clouds that threatened to block the sun. The buildings of the village surrounded the large pool and its residents could easily be seen from where the dog Pokemon was standing. In the center of the lake subsisted a tiny island with a single building in the middle of it. The dog Pokemon knew he would be there soon to accept his punishment.
His thoughts trailed off when he noticed the lion Pokemon making his way to a relatively large building on the other side of the lake. Star, a Shinx whose parents were known for their fighting ability, was around the same age as the dog Pokemon. He didnt know a lot about Star, but his parents had left the village soon after he was born with little indication as to when they would return. With no parents to take care of him, Star was forced to live alone. Incidentally, the dog Pokemons parents were exactly the same and while other Pokemon would watch him occasionally, few were very close to him or treated him like a family member. Nevertheless, they were friendly, but he often wondered why he and Star didnt live together since they were in the same situation. The dog Pokemon lifted his head even more to stare at the sky. The clouds were just beginning to cover the sun, quickly covering the landscape with shade.
HEY, BURN! Are you really going to let him get ahead of you? a voice shouted into the dog Pokemons ear, catching him off guard.
YAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!! the dog Pokemon yelled, jumping into the air in shock. He whirled around to see the leaf Pokemon smiling in triumph.
I had to get you back somehow, didnt I? You should really thank Star for saving you, she said, watching as Star entered the building.
Why? So he can nag about how weak I am? I dont think so, the dog Pokemon turned his head away in defiance.
Oh, come on! You two could be great friends! He may look like a jerk, but he
Just give him a chance! she urged.
The dog Pokemon thought for a moment and decided.
Alright, if you say so
he complied half-heartedly.
Good the leaf Pokemon smiled warmly.
The clouds that blockaded the sun had moved on, allowing the village to once again bask in its brightness. The leaf Pokemon turned away from the lake.
I have to go; Star isnt the only one with things to do, she informed.
Okay, the dog Pokemon acknowledged, I sure hope youre right about Star, he said nervously.
Of course I am! the leaf Pokemon affirmed, Oh, and good luck with your punishment! she said before running off in the direction she had come from.
Once the leaf Pokemon was out of view, the dog Pokemon sighed. Thats right; I still have to visit Ms. Vaporeon for my punishment. Not wanting to drag the situation out, he walked away from the lake and headed to Stars distant home in an arc. The ground below him was much less sodden than the area near the patch of berry bushes and the many footsteps of various Pokemon helped shape the land, making it easier to travel through. As he walked, the dog Pokemon passed by several homes built by Pokemon. Each building was primarily composed of stone, straw, and wood, but varied in shape, color, and design. Some houses seemed to be made only for shelter and sleep while others were designed for comfort and luxury. In front of some homes, he could see mailboxes, specially-made boxes of metal attached to long, wooden sticks that were planted thoroughly into the ground. Occasionally, he would pass by other Pokemon going about their business. If they greeted him, he would give them a nod, maybe a smile, and move on.
He was about halfway to Stars home before he let his mind wander again. Truthfully, he didnt think Star would be friendly to him at all after he thanked the lion Pokemon. The only reason why he agreed was because the leaf Pokemon, Cerise, had insisted. Cerise, a Chikorita, was also around the same age as the dog Pokemon. She lived with her mother in a home very close to the patch of berry bushes. Out of the many families of Pokemon in the village, they were perhaps the friendliest towards him. They provided food for him during the day and even allowed him to live in their home after his parents left. He didnt stay with them for long, but during that time, he and Cerise had become friends. It didnt take long for the dog Pokemon to learn about the Chikoritas short temper and her frightening power. Whenever the dog Pokemon angered Cerise, she would attack him, often knocking him out in the process. If he had refused to talk to Star, the leaf Pokemon would probably be very angry.
The dog Pokemon finally came to a stop in front of a relatively large structure. The buildings design resembled the face of a black and blue lion Pokemon. Neatly cut, light blue stones outlined the head and ears, and the forehead and cheeks were comprised of black-painted wood. The wood formed the shape of tufts of fur that pointed outwards. Painted straw lined the entire face, giving it an appearance similar to fur. The windows near the middle of the face were semiovals that tilted inward to act as intimidating eyes. The inside of the ears and the window frames were a deep yellow. Another opening that acted as the heads mouth was used as the entrance. The dog Pokemon quickly identified it as a Luxios head, something that Star would become if he ever evolved. He felt uneasy just staring into the structures eyes, but he was able to gather enough courage to step forward.
Just as he reached the entrance to the building, Star stepped out, a bag around his neck. He showed no signs of surprise when he noticed the dog Pokemon standing in front of him.
What are you doing here? the lion Pokemon asked indifferently.
I just got here and hes already being a jerk. Sheesh.
Hey, Star, the dog Pokemon began.
I just wanted to thank you for saving me from Cerise earlier. You know, I would probably be dead right now since Im so weak. Thank you for stopping her.
It suddenly dawned on him that this was a stupid idea. Thank Star because he could have been hurt? Admit that he was weak and needed his help? He would rather be knocked out than do something like that.
What do you want? I have work to do and I would prefer to finish it before nighttime, Star was quickly becoming impatient.
The dog Pokemon smirked. He knew exactly what he wanted to do. He would challenge Star and prove that he wasnt a defenseless Pokemon by defeating him.
Star, I cha-
Why hello, Star, Auburn. Are you two enjoying the weather? a voice greeted behind the two Pokemon.
Star immediately turned his attention towards the owner of the voice; the dog Pokemon turned around as well.
Ms. Vaporeon, Star said simply.
The Pokemon was Ms. Vaporeon, the current mayor of the village. She was an aquatic Pokemon. Her body was light blue and her neck had a white collar around it. Her yellow ears, as well as the fin on her head, were made of webbing and darker blue ridges ran from her spine to the end of her long tail fin.
Im sorry, Ms. Vaporeon, I-
If you wanted to say you burned the berry bush, I already know; Cerise told me, the Pokemon replied calmly.
the dog Pokemon, Auburn, let his head droop downward.
I wanted to talk the two of you together. You know the rules of this village; no one your age is allowed to leave it without supervision unless they prove to be capable of defending themselves and have the maturity to handle it.
Burn averted his eyes from the mayor; Star, however, listened intently, eyes locked on the aquatic Pokemon.
Turning to Star, Ms. Vaporeon continued.
Star, I have decided to test you in order to see if you are worthy of such a privilege. I am sure you have noticed that one of the errands given to you today puts you further from the village than usual, but still well within the forest that surrounds us. The path there is filled with hostile Pokemon that could attack you at any moment. You simply have to fend them off, complete your errand and come back. If you can do this, you will be allowed to leave the village whenever you desire.
Thank you, Ms. Vaporeon. I will try my best, Star responded, quiet determination emitting from his golden eyes.
Oh, Im not done yet, the Vaporeon notified. Ms. Vaporeon turned her gaze towards the dog Pokemon and then back to Star.
Huh? Burn, who had been looking away for most of the conversation, looked at the mayor.
Auburn, you have yet to receive your punishment for carelessly destroying something with Ember, she paused.
Burn chose not to correct her. Accident or not, what happened was his fault. Besides, being punished wasnt so bad; he was starting to get used to the idea after so many consecutive days of it. Whatever the punishment was going to be this time, he was ready.
You are to accompany Star and help him with his errands.
What? Star whispered angrily to himself in surprise.
Burn remained silent, but he tried to give Ms. Vaporeon the best I-dont-think-want-to-do-that face he could make.
Star will be in charge of you until the errands are finished. You must listen to his commands quickly and obediently.
Youve got to be kidding me!
If you work together, you can accomplish much more than just one of you can alone, the mayor said, ignoring the two Pokemons obvious signs of discouragement.
Naturally, you will need something to resort to if you cant make it back home on your own. Just in case you find yourselves in trouble, I have given Star an item called the Escape Orb. An Escape Orb is a curious object that allows you to return home safely just by hitting the center of it. Be sure to keep that within reach at all times.
Star, still frowning from the recent development, nodded.
That is all. Good luck, the mayor said, Gee, that was a mouthful, she mumbled as she walked away.
Burn and Star stared at the Vaporeon and then glanced at each other. As soon as their eyes met, they turned away quickly.
You better not slow me down, Star advised.
Whats the hurry? As long as Im with you, this will be a breeze, Burn bragged.
If only he actually felt that way. The idea of fighting hostile Pokemon was both scary and exciting, but would he be able to face them and finish Ms. Vaporeons special errand?
Oh, really? the lion Pokemon questioned suspiciously, Then lets go. We're doing the easy errands first. Why dont you lead the way?
Gladly, Burn answered confidently.
And with that, the two Pokemon began their journey into the forest. What awaited them inside were the first stepping stones of their future exploits. Today marked the beginning of their incredible adventure.
In the bushes nearby:
A single eye poked through a pile of tall berry bushes, eagerly watching the two Pokemon with interest.
Finally, another group of Pokemon is going into the forest! Yes
I think its time to have a little fun! In a flash, the eye quickly disappeared from the bushes without a sound.
