Navigate Generation ⇓

This article gives you ideas of how to use Gastrodon in battle in the Pokémon Black, Pokémon White and Pokemon B2W2 Games. It lists popular movesets used by competitive battlers, as well as a description on how to use each set to help you understand why the moves were chosen. These popular sets are usually the best to use in battle and so reading this guide will help you in your team building.

Gen 4: Overview

This tank pokemon is rarely used in the UU metagame, due to the wider options available; however, they can be a good viable option for use on stall teams, as they can be trained in Defense or Special Defense, to provide a decent wall. The move: Recover, allows you to annoy the foe, and keep it in battle for much longer. Gastrodon is also seen on offensive teams, and thanks to its Base 92 Special Attack, it can deliver powerful special moves, capable of countering any physical type walls.

Gastrodon´s Relaxed nature, together with its high HP, allows it to survive well against Physcial hits, giving you time to attack the opponent with both Physcial and Special moves. Together with 92Base Special Attack and 83Base Attack, Gastrodon provides a well balanced, and average damage offence. Thanks to its good movepool, this set allows you to mimic Swampert, and cover Grass, Flying, Steel, Fire, Rock, Ground, and Dragon types, which are all extremely common to the UU metagame.

Toxic is a good option for tackling physical and special walls your opponent may use; however, Surf is also a great move, as it provides a Special alternative to Earthquake, countering phyiscal walls with ease. Lastly, thanks to the 252 EVs in Defense, Gastrodon is able to survive physcial moves from most UU pokemon, and therefore, allows you to take advantage of the Recovery move. The 48 EVs in Special Attack allows you to make the most of its high Special Attack stat, and allows you to 1HKO other NU pokemon, such as Sudowoodo, with ease. Again, the held item, leftovers, is a great help to recovering some HP, particularly in Hail conditions or when the pokemon is attempting to use Leech Seed.

This standard set provides coverage against both physical and special walls. The 252EVs in HP and 128 EVs in Defense and Special Defense, allow it to endure reasonably threatening hits, and its Bold nature allows it to stay at a good speed. The Stockpile move allows Gastrodon to improve its Defense and Special Defense further, with a +1 factor to both on each use.

The idea of this set is to use Stockpile to get a boost to your Defense and Special Defense, then to use Recover, which would, as a result stall most UU and NU sweepers. Once setup, you´re in a reasonable position to attempt to tackle the foe. Using Lum Berry can provide a switch in Toxic Spikes, or an mispredicted sleep. Ice Beam can take on Salamence if you have a boost from Stockpile, but Toxic allows you the guarantee that you are not walled by Vaporeon. Again, the use of Surf and Icebeam are vital for attacking the foe. Thanks to 92 Base Special Attack, this pokemon still has 220 Special Attack, even without EVs, allowing it to do reasonable damage to Rock, Ground, Fire, and Flying type foes.

Curse is an extremely useful move, particularly in the UU metagame. On each use, Gastrodon´s attack and Defense are boosted by 1 stage, allowing you to continuously wall physical threats, and then later sweep your opponents team. With 252EVs in Special Defence, you are able to take hits from possible Special Attacks, which your opponent may deliver to try and counter your Curse setup. Recover, again, is an extremely useful move, as it allows you to recover 50% of your HP, providing a very stable wall, and therefore, a greater chance of a setup.

248 EVs in HP, give you an even Defense, while max Special Defense means that Gastrodon´s impressive Special defense stat is boosted for maximum survivability. Waterfall is a great STAB to have, and takes advantage of the Attack boost has to offer, but Earthquake is Gastrodon´s strongest move. Stone Edge allows you to counter flying type pokemon and Shedinja´s, but Waterfall prevents Claydol´s from attempting to set up. All these moves provide decent coverage for attempting a sweep after setting up Curse.

This set is extremely risky, but if used correctly, can offer a counter to both Celebi, Roserade, and other Grass type pokemon, With access to Mirror Coat, and high HP, Gastrodon can become the UU version of Wobbuffet, and redirect lethal attacks back into the opponent, 1HKOing them all.

The sercet to this set is in prediction and timing. Gastrodon must be placed on the field when your previous pokemon has been knocked out, or placed as a lead to your team, therefore, you will have a full turn to perform the attack. Based on your opponents attack typing, use Counter to counter Physical Attacks such as Razor Leaf, or Mirror Coat to counter Special Attacks such as Leaf Storm. The focus sash will guarantee you don´t get knocked out, allowing you to take a hit from anything.

Recover allows you the possibility of recovering from 1HP up to 50% HP after knocking out the foe, whilst moves such as Surf can be used to tackle a non lethal opponent. Toxic is a great move for countering possible walls your opponent may stick in front of you, so is advised over Surf.

If someone uses Taunt, this set is flawed, so its best to switch.

Yes, this is an Anti-Lead Gastrodon. Gastrodon are very bulky, and it has the ability to outstall most leads, such as Swampert and Azelf. Azelf´s Psychic, Swampert´s Earthquake and Metagross´ Earthquake all 3hko, while Azelf is 2hko´d by Surf, and Metagross is 2hko´d by Earth Power. Using Protect will make sure that you don´t need to worry about an Explosion from a suicide lead. Using a Rindo Berry may let you survive a random Grass Attack, but a Lum Berry protects you from a threatening status. Sticky Hold means that Trick Leads can´t take your item.

Most Used Set

The most commonly used set is the Mix Attacker set, which deals with similar, Swampert-like offensive moves. This set deals with the recovering potential Gastrodon has, and so, is a good, late game option, for attempting to wall, or break the opponents offensive tactics. Thanks to Gastrodon´s Earthquake move, it is able to do serious damage to Steel and Poison types, which are commonly seen in the UU metagame, making this a viable counter for Arbok and Aggron. The move: Recover, allows Gastrodon to recover its HP, during times where the opponent may be Paralyzed, or Asleep.

Other Options

Amnesia boosts Gastrodon´s Special Defense and is a great Setup option for making it an unbeatable wall, taking most Special attacks. You are then able to use Recover, which would restore the health you lost in the process. Rindo Berries are also viable for surviving possible Grass Attacks, however, the best option is to switch out. In addition, Yawn is a great move for forcing your opponent to switch, especially on Pokemon, which can threaten Gastrodon. Moreover, Spit Up works great with Gastrodon´s bulkiness and great Special Attack.

Gastrodon lacks the move: Stealth Rock, which, as a result, limits the possibilities of countering focus sashes, and flying type foes. Due to these faults, Gastrodon is not usually used as a lead pokemon.

Usual Counters

Gastrodon is unable to take any Grass attacks, due to its typing. Going for a Rindo Berry is incredibly risky, and so, any Grass type pokemon is a great option at tackling this pokemon -viable counters include the grass type, Roserade. Other pokemon that can counter Gastrodon include Celebi and Bronzong, which have the ability to wall Gastrodon, and thanks to their movepools, they can both execute Grass Knots, which would 1HKO a Gastrodon. Lastly, Abomasnow can provide a decent counter to Gastrodon´s Earthquake attacks. Skarmory and Bronzong can both be used to wall the Curse set, thanks to their high Defense Stat, and Rotom-C is a good option to counter, as it is able to use Leaf Storm.

Opinion

Gastrodon, like Swampert, has great typing and a good movepool, with decent Stats. Its ability to access the move Recover allows it to perform tasks Swampert cannot do; however, it lacks to ability to provide a decent wall thanks to its poor Defense and Special Defense Stats, and due to this issue, it is only really used in the UU metagame.

Gastrodon is a decent wall in UU, but is overshadowed by Quagsire and Whiscash, and due to its position, it is known as the inferior Swampert.

Gastrodon is an underestimated Pokemon. It can be as good as Swampert in many ways, and it can stall with more success. Anti lead Gastrodon is one of the best Anti leads available, despite not having Stealth Rock. Overall, Gastrodon is brilliant, but at the same time limited, especially in movepool.
