This article gives you ideas of how to use Exeggutor in battle in the Pokémon Black, Pokémon White and Pokemon B2W2 Games. It lists popular movesets used by competitive battlers, as well as a description on how to use each set to help you understand why the moves were chosen. These popular sets are usually the best to use in battle and so reading this guide will help you in your team building.

Gen 5: Overview

Exeggutor was always a good Pokemon. In Gen I, it was one of the best Pokemon around. As time went on though, the Coconut Pokemon slowly declined into the UU environment. Game Freak decided to bless Exeggutor with two things in Gen V. The first was everlasting sun in the lower tiers. The second is that Exeggutor was given an interesting ability known as Harvest. Harvest allows an infinite use of a berry, meaning that Exeggutor can use Rest/Lum Berry infinitely without ever being asleep. With decent 95/85/65 defenses and access to a full recovery move, Exeggutor can finally run other sets aside from Trick Room and Sun Sweeper.

Exeggutor still has its flaws. With base 55 speed, Exeggutor isn’t going to out speed anything without sun. Exeggutor has a decent 95 base attack, but almost no physical options. Exeggutor’s typing also gives it a whooping 7 weaknesses, including a 4x weakness to Bug.

With Vulpix/Ninetails obtaining Drought, Exeggutor finally is able to become an effective offensive threat due to the everlasting Speed Boost thanks to Chlorophyll. Grass Knot is recommended in the first slot due to its reliability. It also allows Exeggutor to nail Tyranitar and Hippowdon hard without being bound to an attack like Solarbeam. Solarbeam can be used though due to its consistant base power, which will allow Exeggutor to hit Vaporeon significantly harder.. Sleep Powder is recommended in the second slot, as a sleeping Pokemon is essentially a dead Pokemon in this Generation. The third move slot is for whichever you want to hit with Exeggutor´s Psychic STAB. Psychic is used to hit Pokemon like Roobushin, while Psycho Shock gives you a chance to beat Blissey and Evo Stone Chansey. Against the latter, Exeggutor might be better off switching, as it has no chance of OHKOing either and might end up with a nasty paralysis.

The last move slot is for type coverage. HP Fire has nice coverage with Grass and allows Exeggutor to hit Nattorei and Scizor, who completely wall the rest of Exeggutor´s move set. HP Ice can be used to OHKO Garchomp and Gliscor and to hit Latios, who also walls Exeggutor´s entire move set without it.. HP ground is an option to hit Heatran, but most of them are on a Balloon anyway. HP Rock allows you to nail Volcanrona for 4x super effective damage while still hitting Pokemon like Scizor for neutral.

Additional Comments

A Timid Nature puts Exeggutor at a nice 458 speed in the sun, which allows you to out run Scarfed Latios with max speed. Modest can be used for extra power, but you will most likely get nailed hard before you can utilize the extra power.

This set is designed to abuse Exeggutor´s newfound ability, Harvest. With Harvest and Lum Berry, Exeggutor can not be crippled by status effects, making it a perfect Status Absorber. Rest is the icing of the cake on this set, as combining it with Lum Berry and Harvest gives Exeggutor access to a full recovery move without any drawbacks. Sleep Powder is recommended in the second slot in order to cripple one of your opponent´s Pokemon for the remainder of the game. The last two move slots belong to Exeggutor´s STAB. Psychic is recommended in the third slot in order to hit Breloom, as Exeggutor with this set is one of, if not the best Breloom counter. The last spot is reserved for Giga Drain. With the increase of power, going from 60 to 75 base power, Giga Drain becomes viable in competitive play. Although Exeggutor has access to Rest, the extra HP gained from Giga Drain is always helpful.

Additional Comments

The EV spread is designed to increase Exeggutor´s physical bulk. With this EV spread, Exeggutor basically laughs at Breloom, resisting both of its STAB, immunity to Spore and still able to OHKO offfensive variants with Psychic. As for nature, Bold is recommended to increase Exeggutor´s bulk, but Modest can be used if you want the extra power.

This set is designed so that Exeggutor can take advantage of its newfound ability, Harvest, while maintaining a viable Offensive threat. Sleep Powder is listed first for the simple fact that sleep is devastating in this generation. Rest is listed second for the Rest/Lum Berry/Harvest combination, which grants Exeggutor a full recovery move with no strings attached. The third move slot is a toss up between Psychic and Psycho Shock. Psychic allows Exeggutor to prey on Fighting types due to their weaker sp.Def, like Machamp, Roobushin, and Breloom. Psycho Shock can be used to nail Blissey significantly harder and still can OHKO Breloom and Machamp. Bulk Up Roobushins will whave their way with you though. The last move slot is reserved for Leaf Storm, as it is Exeggutor´s most powerful attack. It´s a shame that there isn´t a berry that has the same effects as White Herb, but c´est la vie.

Additional Comments

With 140 Spe EVs, Exeggutor will be able to out speed Bulky Politoed. Exeggutor isn´t going to be out speeding much else, so thats all it needs. Max spAtk EVs and and a Modest Nature is recommended so that Exeggutor can abuse its 125 base spAtk. The rest is dumped into HP for overall Bulk.

Although outclassed by the likes of Rankurusu and Bronzong, Exeggutor can be a pretty good Trick Room user. The premise of this set is simple. Come in on something that either isn´t threatening or off of fodder and either set up Trick Room or put your opponent´s Pokemon to sleep with Sleep Powder. When either one or both have been done, Exeggutor has a few option. Leaf Storm is recommended in the third slot due to the fact that it is Exeggutor´s most powerful attack. Explosion is recommended in the 4th slot so that you can bring in your next Pokemon for free. HP fire can be used no nail Nattorei and Scizor though, who won´t be taking a whole lot from either Leaf Storm or Explosion.

The EV spread is set to maximize Exeggutor´s attacking power while minimizing its speed. A Quiet nature is recommended so that Leaf Storm packs more of a punch.

Additional Comments

Lum Berry is recommended for the item so that Exeggutor will always be able to set up Trick Room unless it is OHKOed. Life Orb can be used if you want your attacks to hit a bit harder.

This set is mainly designed so that Exeggutor can set up screens and explode, which brings in a Pokemon for free under the protection of Light Screen and Reflect. The EV spread is designed so that Exeggutor has a chance to out speed something while maintaining some bulk in the precess. Sleep Powder is the best support move that Exeggutor has, as it essentially makes one of your opponent´s Pokemon useless (minus a Sleep Talker). Light Screen and Reflect are great support options which can allow a frailer sweeper, like Cloyster (specially) or Lucario to set up. Explosion is to go out with a bang, and while it has been nerfed in this gen, it still allows the user to bring in a Pokemon for free.

This gimmicky set takes advantage of Exeggutor´s Harvest ability in order to attempt a Curse sweep. Curse is the key to this set, as it boosts Exeggutor´s offensive presence while increasing it´s physical bulk at the same time. There are two variants to this set, an offensive EV spread and a defensive EV spread. The offensive spread takes advantage of Exeggutor´s ability to infinitely use a Cusap Berry while the defensive spread utilizes Exeggutor´s access to a full recovery move with the help of Lum Berry. The second move slot of this set is dependent on what EV spread you are utilizing. Substitute is utilized in the offensive spread so that Exeggutor has a safe method to widdle it´s health so it uses Cusap Berry. The defensive spread prefers the use of Rest so that Exeggutor can reliably get in several Curses before attacking. The last two move slots are reserved for Exeggutor´s physical attacks. Seed Bomb and Return don´t have the best coverage together, but they are the best physical moves that Exeggutor has access to, since Harvest is illegal with all move tutor moves.

Although Exeggutor has an average 90 Attack stat, with access to Swords Dance, Exeggutor can become a potent physical sweeper. With Swords Dance, Exeggutor´s attack stat becomes a respectible 578 with a Jolly nature. Wood Hammer is recommended in the first move slot, as it is the most powerful physical attack that Exeggutor has access to. Seed Bomb can be used over that if the recoil is unappealing. The third move slot goes to Zen Headbutt, as it is Exeggutor´s only other physical STAB option. Low Kick is recommended in the last slot to hurt Steels like Heatran hard. Explosion can be used in order to go out with a bang and take a nice chunk of the opponent with you. Synthesis can be an option since it recovers Exeggutor to full HP in the sun.

Team Mates

Heatran is an amazing partner with Exeggutor. They both resist each other´s weaknesses and Heatran can absorb any Fire attacks that come Exeggutor´s way. Heatran can also set up Stealth Rocks which can help turn some 2HKOs into OHKOs. For any chlorophyll set, Ninetails is almost required, as the everlasting sun will greatly boost Exeggutor´s offensive presence. Exeggutor appreciates Rapid Spin support, as Spikes/Toxic Spikes/Stealth Rocks will start to wear it down quickly. Foretress is a great partner for this, resisting all of Exeggutor´s weaknesses barring Fire. For the Trick Room set, slow sweepers, like Marowak, Gigaleth, Clampearl, etc. are always welcome as teammates. For Dual Screens, frail Pokemon looking to set up, like Shell Breakers, are great teammates with Exeggutor, and can save them from some potential KOs from priority users.

Other Options

Energy Ball- Can be used over Leaf Storm for reliability, but the difference in power is humongous.

Sunny Day- Can be used for a Self-Chlorophyl set, but with Ninetails around there really isn´t any point.

Ingrain- Can be used for self recovery, but Exeggutor will have no way of switching out, which can mean instant death.

Stun Spore- Can be used on a Double-Status set with Sleep Powder.

Exeggutor really doesn´t have all too many other options.

Leech Seed- Can be used an another way of healing, but Exeggutor doesn´t have the bulk to pull of a Leech Seed set.

Usual Counters

Unless Exeggutor has Low Kick or HP Fire, Steel Pokemon are a great counter to the big tree. Heatran is the best option, as it resists all of Exeggutor´s attack options aside Low Kick. Metagross and Jirachi are other great counters, being 4x resistant to Exeggutor´s Psychic STAB. Neither of them will like taking a sun-boosted HP Fire though. Scizor can easily threaten Exeggutor with U–Turn, as long as it isn´t packing HP Fire. A Specially Defensive Tyranitar can come in, change the weather, and put a halt to Exeggutor if it´s a special set. Rankurusu can easily come in and start Calm Minding on Exeggutor while Exeggutor can´t do all that much to Rankurusu. Scarfed Sazandora is resistant to all of Exeggutor´s STAB and can threaten with U–Turn. With Chlorophyll, Exeggutor only has a speed of 458, so any Scarfed Pokemon with a base speed of 95 or higher will out speed Exeggutor. Sazandora and Latios are great counters to Exeggutor, as they resist all of Exeggutor´s moves in the sun and can KO with Draco Meteor.

Opinion

Exeggutor is a very underrated Pokemon. With the addition of everlasting sun and the ability Harvest, Exeggutor can become a viable threat in this generation. It will most likely start out as a BL Pokemon, but with the ability to counter Breloom, it might creep its way into OU.
