This article gives you ideas of how to use Slowbro in battle in the Pokémon Black, Pokémon White and Pokemon B2W2 Games. It lists popular movesets used by competitive battlers, as well as a description on how to use each set to help you understand why the moves were chosen. These popular sets are usually the best to use in battle and so reading this guide will help you in your team building.
Gen 5: OverviewLast generation, Slowbro was a UU Pokemon, primarily because it couldn´t counter Scizor and other Pursuit users like Tyranitar. In generation Five however, Slowbro gained some useful tools that help it become more of a threat. Like most Water Pokemon, it got the move Scald, which has a 30% chance to Burn the opponent. This helps Slowbro counter certain Pokemon like Scizor and Tyranitar if Slowbro is able to burn them. Also, it got the ability Regenerator, which helps it switch into battle with more ease. In addition to these new tools, Slowbro has great physical defenses, decent special attack, and a resistance to Fighting moves, which have become more common this generation. Slowbro also has a great selection of moves. Slowbro has the ability to hit many Pokemon for super effective damage, has the ability to inflict every status condition possible to opponents, and even has Slack Off for a recovery move. Slowbro can be a good addition to many teams because of its great physical defenses and helpful resistances.
However, Slowbro, like nearly any other Pokemon, has its faults. Its low base speed means that just about any Pokemon can outspeed Slowbro, which can hinder Slowbro´s ability to perform well in battles. Also, Slowbro has a mediocre special defense at best, so strong special attacks will severely damage Slowbro. Slowbro has five weakness to Grass, Electric, Dark, Ghost, and Bug moves, meaning that many Pokemon could have super-effective attacks on Slowbro. When played correctly, Slowbro can overcome these faults and be a valuable asset to most teams.

Because of its great defensive stats and its good selection of moves, Slowbro is a great candiate to be a good defensive wall. Slowbro also got the Regenerator from the Dream World, making it wall Pokemon easier. For its first move, Scald is preferred, as it hits for consistent damage and has a 30% chance to burn the opponent. Surf can also be used here, mainly because it has greater power than Scald. Slack Off should be the second move, and should be on most of Slowbro´s sets for that matter. Slack Off gives Slowbro a reliable method of healing, which is helpful for any wall. The third slot is used for supporting moves. Thunder Wave cripples many fast sweepers, like Volcarona, Gengar, and Latios. Toxic can cripple most walls, walls like Hippwodon and Swampert. The fourth slot is best used for a coverage move to pair with Scald or Surf. Ice Beam is preferred here, getting coverage on threats like Garchomp, Gliscor, and Salamence. Psychic, though it doesn´t hit many threats for super-effective damage, gets great neutral coverage with Surf, and also gets a Stab bonus. Flamethrower can be used to hit certain threats, most notably Ferrothorn, which Slowbro actually outspeeds.
Additional Comments
Because this is a physically defensive set, Slowbro wants to have max defense and HP EVs, along with a defense boosting nature. Leftovers should always be used as the item, while Regenerator should always be used as the ability.

Because of its good physical defenses, a good recovery move, and good coverage moves, Slowbro makes a good Calm Mind user. Again, the addition of Regenerator to Slowbro has helped Slowbro become even more difficult to kill. For the third slot, Surf is preferred, as Slowbro wants decent powered moves with good coverage on this set. Surf is Slowbro´s most consistent, strongest Water attack. Scald can be used instead of surf for the 30% chance of a burn, but power is generally preferred for this set. Psychic is preferred for the last slot because Slowbro gets very good coverage with Surf and Psychic, better coverage than other combinations of Slowbro´s moves. Other moves can be used instead of Psychic to hit specific targets. Ice Beam can be used to hit the many Dragon-typed Pokemon for super-effective damage, and Flamethrower can be used to hit some Steel Pokemon, most notably Ferrothorn, for good damage.
Additional Comments
Slowbro wants max physical bulk for this set; this way it can survive both physical and special attacks after a few Calm Mind boosts. Max defense and HP EVs are used for this set, with a Bold nature. Leftovers should be used as the item, while Regenerator should be used as the ability.
Ability | Nature | Item | HP | Atk. | Def. | SpAtk. | SpDef. | Speed
Regenerator / Own Tempo | Modest nature | choice specs | 252 | 0 | 4 | 252 | 0 | 0

In addition to being a good defensive Pokemon, Slowbro can also be a good user of Choice Specs. It has a base 100 special attack, not bad by any means, and it also has a wide range of moves to choose from. This set is designed to tear holes through a team, so strong moves are preferred for this set. For this reason, Surf is preferred over Scald, as Surf has more power than Scald. Scald does have that 30% chance to burn the opponent though, which can help in certain situations. Psychic is also preferred over Psyshock, mainly because Psychic has more pwoer than Psyshock. Psyshock has the benefit of hitting certain fat pink blobs (Blissey, Chansey, Snorlax) harder than Psychic though. Ice Beam is used in the third slot, mainly to hit the Dragon Pokemon like Dragonite, Garchomp, and Salamence hard. For the final slot, Flamethrower is preferred to hit some Steel-typed Pokemon, most notably Ferrothorn. Hidden Power Electric enables Slowbro to hit most water Pokemon for decent damage, most notably Gyarados. Trick can also be used for this set, since it could be used to potentally cripple certain defensive Pokemon, like Blissey. Note that Trick is illegal with the Regenerator ability, so Own Tempo should be used if trick is being used.
Additional Comments
The EVs and nature are obvious for this set. A Modest nature is used to increase Slowbro´s special attacking power to the best point possible. Max special attack and HP EVs are used to increase Slowbro´s bulk and power to the best point possible. Regenerator should almost always be used; Own Tempo should only be used if Trick is present in Slowbro´s moveset.
Defensively, Blissey or Chansey works well with Slowbro. Blissey can tank the special attacks aimed at Slowbro, while Slowbro can tank the many physical, fighting hits that can hurt Blissey. Also, Hydreigon resists all of Slowbro´s weaknesses minus Bug, and Slowbro can tank the fighting hits that may hurt Hydreigon. Offensively, Infernape can work well with Slowbro, as Infernape can usually do well against Scizor, Ferrothorn, and Tyranitar. Starmie can also do well against a lot of Slowbro´s checks, like Thundurus, Gengar, and Jellicent, despite Starmie and Slowbro sharing the same typing. Volcarona, if it gets a Quiver Dance set up, can also do well against many of Slowbro´s checks and counters.
Other OptionsFocus Blast - Could be used to hit certain targets, like hitting Ferrothorn and Tyranitar for decent damage. Slowbro usually prefers to use its other attacks though.
Fire Blast - Could be used as a strong Fire attack, or at least stronger than Flamethrower.
Grass Knot - Could be used as an alternate way to hit Water Pokemon. In particualr, it works well against foes like Quagsire and Swampert.
Yawn - Could be used to force switches or to put opponents to sleep. Usually, Toxic and Thunder Wave are better options, but Yawn can work also.
Trick Room - Could be used for a Trick Room supporter set, much like the first defensive set. Keep in mind though that Slowking is the better Trick Room sweeper, due to Slowking´s access to Nasty Plot.
Belly Drum - Could be used for a gimmick Trick room sweeper set.
Curse - Could be used for a Bulky Sweeper set. However, this is outclassed by Slowking, since Slowking has greater special defense than Slowbro. Having good special defense also helps on most Curse sets.
Usual CountersSadly, Slowbro has a lot of common counters. If Slowbro lacks Flamethrower or Fire Blast, Ferrothorn can switch into nearly all of Slowbro´s attacks and either set up entry hazards or Leech Seed on Slowbro. Tyranitar can also switch into most of Slowbro´s moves and threaten Slowbro with super-effective Dark attacks. Scizor can also greatly damage Slowbro with its super-effective Bug attacks, and it can even set up a Swords Dance on Slowbro if Flamethrower isn´t present. Latios also is a great counter to Slowbro, as it can switch into anything that Slowbro has to offer, barring status moves, and hit Slowbro back with strong special attacks. Despite being strong on the physical defensive side, Slowbro doesn´t have a strong special defense. Thundurus, Gengar, and Starmie all make decent checks to Slowbro, as they all can hit Slowbro hard with strong special attacks. Rotom-W, Jelicent, and Blissey are all good Slowbro counters as well. Also, one way to damage Slowbro is to poison or Burn it. Slowbro usually doesn´t carry status-healing moves, so it will be crippled by Burns and Poison.
Opinions
Slowbro is one of the premiere bulky waters in Generation 5, with good bulk, good defenses and moves like Slack Off, and Thunder Wave to support him, you can expect to see quite a few Slowbro in the OU Environment.
