This article gives you ideas of how to use Whimsicott in battle in the Pokémon Black, Pokémon White and Pokemon B2W2 Games. It lists popular movesets used by competitive battlers, as well as a description on how to use each set to help you understand why the moves were chosen. These popular sets are usually the best to use in battle and so reading this guide will help you in your team building.

Gen 5: Overview

Looking over Whimsicott´s stats, we see good speed, but it it doesn´t even need it because of Prankster, and with those apur attacking stats it isn´t going to be running either Infiltraitor or Chlorophyll. But on the glass half-full side of things to go with Prankster we see Taunt, Leech Seed, Substitute, Encore, Switcheroo, Reflect, Light Screen and the new-and-improved Cotton Guard. If all else fails it can use Stun Spore and Toxic. It really has 10 million non-attacking moves to get priority on, and abuse this wonderful new ability!

This is often considered Whimsicott´s best set: and for all the right reasons. This Whimsicott set is often used as a lead as it outspeeds and can Taunt almost every lead. The choice between Encore and Cotton Guard is a difficult one: Encore only lasts 3 turns now, which is sad. Cotton Guard, on the other hand, got a unholy boost with it now raising defence to +3 in 1 turn. It is also a good idea to save Whimsicott for later if using Encore, as it can force a switch/aid a set-up sweeper. Leftovers is the reccomended item, but if you feel that Whimsicott is to eaisily OHKO´d then use Focus Sash. Thanks to MikeDecIsHere, U–Turn has been slashed in with Encore and Cotton Guard. Use a Careful Nature and the given EV spread if you are using U–Turn. The EV spread allows Whimsicott to outspeed Max Speed Tornadus and Thundurus.

Other Options

A EV spread of 252 Def/40 SDef/216 Spe with a Impish Nature gives Whimsicott enough speed to outspeed Tornadus and Thundurus and the bulk to sponge some psychial hits. 252 Def/252 SDef/4 Spe doesn´t give it enough speed to beat most other Pranksters (Yes, Tornadus and Thundurus outspeed with this spread) but it gives it much more special bulk compared to the other 2 spreads.

Don´t count Whimsicott out as a dual screener: due to Prankster, it can set up both barriers rather eaisily. Reflect and Light Screen are the obvious two major moves in this set as they can do wonders when they are up. Glass Cannon sweepers like Infernape will benifet from the defence boosts, as they now do not have to worry about their frailness. The choice between Substitute and Leech Seed is difficult, but Substitute is reccomended for the extra survivability. But Leftovers recovery is sorley missed by Whimsicott, so Leech Seed can help with the extra survivability. The choice is once again between Encore and Cotton Guard: run Bold if Encore, Careful if Cotton Guard.

Team Mates

Anything that can take out a fellow Grass type is really helpful for Whimsicott, as Leech Seed doesn´t affect grass types. Infernape is a very good teammate, as it can OHKO Ferrothorn like it wasn´t there, and Whimsicott can set up a Encore to give it a Nasty Plot/Swords Dance boost. Heatran is also a very good teammate for Whimsicott, as it can absorb Fire type attacks with Flash Fire. It also sets up Stealth Rock, and resists all of Whimsicott´s weakness. Anyone who can set up hazards helps Whimsicott, such as Skarmory or Ferrothorn.

Other Options

Stun Spore- Can work well on Whimsicott, as it can support slower sweepers.

Toxic- Can be used with Substitute, Leech Seed and Giga Drain for a super-draining set.

Sunny Day- Can block out Rain and Sandstorm, but Sun´s usage is on the rise.

Tailwind- Can be used like a gimmick set, but isn´t recommended.

Memento- Can also be used to badly hurt a sweeper.

U–Turn- Can be used if you´re really worried about being Taunt bait.

Giga Drain- Can be used if you´re really worried about being Taunt bait.

Energy Ball- Can be used if you´re really worried about being Taunt bait.

Trick Room- Doesn´t greatly benifet Whimsicott, where without Prankster it´s speed is it´s best asset.

Switcheroo TrickScarf anyone?

Usual Counters

Any Grass type can be classified as a counter to Whimsicott, as they all are immune to Leech Seed. Ferrothorn stands out, as it completely walls Whimsicott (no matter what your running) and can Gyro Ball Whimsicott for a 3HKO. Reuniclus views Whimsicott as set-up bait, as it takes no damage from Leech Seed due to Magic Guard. Most variants of attacking Heatran can safley switch into Whimsicott, and Flame Charge on the switch.

Opinion

When I was looking over the Gen 5 Pokedex when it came out, I was pretty sad because there were not many good Grass types, my favorite type. I saw Whimsicott (Erefuun, at the time) and it all went away. Whimsicott is one of the best users of Prankster, as it has millions of non-attacking moves to get priority on. I thought Well, this thing is going to be a avid SubSeeder, and I was right. Despite being voted UU by Pokemon Online once, it is still a great Pokemon that should be considered on any Stall or Semi-stall team. Haven´t tried it yet? Drop it into one of your teams, and see what it can do!
