This article gives you ideas of how to use Mewtwo in battle in the Pokémon Black, Pokémon White and Pokemon B2W2 Games. It lists popular movesets used by competitive battlers, as well as a description on how to use each set to help you understand why the moves were chosen. These popular sets are usually the best to use in battle and so reading this guide will help you in your team building.
Gen 5: OverviewThere are so many good things about Mewtwo. Great stat distribution, eclectic move pool, Mewtwo is the god of Pokemon for a reason. For some reason, Game Freak decided that Mewtwo wasn´t good enough though, so they gave it a new toy, Psycho Break. Psycho Break is a 100 BP Psychic Special Attack that deals PHYSICAL damage. This means that Mewtwo´s only eal counter, Blissey, is as good as dead. Mewtwo FiNALLY has a reason to use its STAB.
Tension is also an underrated ablility, as the inability to consume a berry can sometimes destroy a Pokemon, like Chople Berry Heatran. That being said, Psychic STAB is kind of terrible. With 110/90/90 defenses, Mewtwo can be easily picked off by Shadow Sneak. These are all essentially nitpicks though. Mewtwo lacks any true flaws and counters due to its versatility, and is essentially the perfect Pokemon.

This set is the most common set that Mewtwo uses in the Ubers metagame, and for good reason. After a Calm Mind, Mewtwo´s special attack stat becomes a frightening 611. Factor this in with the fact that Mewtwo can hit Pokemon with that stat both physically and defensively, and you have one of the deadliest Pokemon in the game. Psycho Break is required with this set, as it is Mewtwo´s greatest weapon. After a Calm Mind, Psycho Break can 2HKO Latias, Chansey and Blissey. Psycho Break also means that Mewtwo won´t be loosing any Calm Mind wars. Aura Sphere is recommended in the second slot, as it has very good type coverage with Psycho Break. Ice Beam occupies the last spot to hit two specific Pokemon, Groudon and Lugia. Both Groudon and Lugia pack phasing moves that can ruin your sweep with Mewtwo. Lugia can survive a boosted Psycho Break and easily whirlwind you away. Groudon can survive and knock Mewtwo away with a Dragon Tail or just outright kill you with Earthquake. Flamethrower is an option to hit Scizor and Metagross, as both of these Pokemon can survive an attack and U-turn/Meteor Mash/Pursuit/Bullet Punch Mewtwo into oblivion. Thunder is listed in order to hit Kyogre harder, but Psycho Break can put a nice dent in it already.

This set is used to make Mewtwo more bulky, as a Mewtwo with a few Calm Minds is very hard to take down with special attacks. Recover is recommended in the second slot, as it allows Mewtwo to have a lot more survivability. Substitute is a viable alternative, as it can be used to stop Dragon Tail or for scouting. It also gives Mewtwo a chance to get a hit on Pokemon that would normally take it down, like Scizor. Psycho Break is recommended in the third move slot, as it is Mewtwo´s most powerful attack. The last move slot is for coverage. Aura Sphere is recommended in the last spot, as it has good type coverage with Psycho Break. However, Ice Beam can be used to hit Lugia, who completely walls Mewtwo without it.
Additional Comments
204 HP EVs is recommended, as it gives Mewtwo the ability to make 101 Substitutes. Max Speed is also recommended to allow Mewtwo to speed tie with Darkrai. The rest is dumped into Special Attack. Pressure is listed first, as it is the only ability Mewtwo has access to. Once Tension is released, it becomes a viable alternative. Leftovers is the item of choice, as it is a great way for instant recovery, especially with Substitute.

Pressure / Tension | Timid | leftovers | 4 | 0 | 0 | 252 | 0 | 252

With the coming of Gen V, a new move has been added to make set up sweepers miserable, Dragon Tail. With Dragon Tail now in the metagame, Taunt just isn´t enough to protect Mewtwo from being phased out. However, this doesn´t mean that this set is useless, as Taunt still blocks status effects and makes Lugia´s life absolutely miserable. Calm Mind works well with Taunt, as Taunt usually forces the opponent to switch, allowing Mewtwo to set up. The third slot belongs to Psycho Break, as it is Mewtwo´s most powerful attack. Aura Sphere is used in the last spot, as it has good type coverage with Psycho Break. Ice Beam is a viable option, due to the abundance of Dragons seen in Ubers.

The classic StallTwo set returns in Gen V. This set does surprisingly well in the current metagame, as it hinders the two new physical sweepers in Ubers, Arceus and Zekrom, while still making old threats like Garchomp and Groudon useless. 32 speed EVs with a Timid nature gives you enough speed to outrun Jolly Garchomp, which is really what you should aim for. You could increase the speed EVs to out speed Arceus, but that would severely reduce your physical bulk. 252 HP and 224 Defense EVs makes Mewtwo surprisingly bulky. Combine that with Will–O–Wisp and Reflect, and you have a very good physical wall. With Will–O–Wisp and Reflect, Mewtwo has the ability to make its entire team wall a physical Pokemon. Taunt is required in this set, as it stop other Taunters from completely ruining Mewtwo. Recover is a great way for Mewtwo to stay healthy, and really makes Mewtwo hard to take down. Psycho Break can be used over Reflect if you want an attacking move, but Reflect serves this set better.
Ability | Nature | Item | HP | Atk. | Def. | SpAtk. | SpDef. | Speed
Pressure | Jolly / Timid | light clay | 252 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 4 | 252

With the nerf of Selfdestruct, this set looses a lot of viability, but it still can be used to bring in a frail Pokemon that wants to set up like Octillery or Mew for free. Taunt is used to stop other Taunters from ruining your fun and to prevent recovery after Mewtwo´s Selfdestruct hits them in the face. Light Screen and Reflect are the best options for team support, as they can really help frailer Pokemon seen in the Uber enviroment shine. After Mewtwo is done setting up, Selfdestruct is to go out with a bang. Even though the power has decreased, you can still bring in whatever Pokemon you want for free, which makes it a good last move. Psycho Break is always an option, as it is Mewtwo´s best move.
Since one of Mewtwo´s only counters is Multiscale Lugia, Stealth Rocks support is necessary in order to break the effects of Multiscale. Dialga is a great parter to Mewtwo, as it resists all of Mewtwo´s resistances and can easily get Stealth Rocks up. Foretress is another Stealth Rocks user that resists all of Mewtwo´s weaknesses. Thanks to the buff of Sturdy, Foretress is almost guaranteed to get Stealth Rocks up, barring sleep, and can also provide Rapid Spin support. Deoxys-S can set Stealth Rocks and Spikes up as a lead.
On the offensive side, Mixed Palkia is a great teammate for Mewtwo, as it can lure in Scizor, Metagross, and Careful Tyranitar expecting the Scarfed Set, only to be beaten down by Fire Blast/Aqua Tail. Palkia can also handle the top threat in Ubers, Kyogre.
Scarfed Genosect can be a cool teammate, as it resists all of Mewtwo´s weaknesses. Genosect can also come in on Metagross/Scizor and threaten with Flamethrower.
Scarfed Kyogre can also be great teammate for Mewtwo, as it can take on Ho-oh and other Scarfed Kyogre with Thunder.
Lucario resists all of Mewtwo´s weaknesses, and can begin setting up to sweep as the opponent switches out, barring if they pack Focus Blast.
Scizor can easily take out Giratina-O, Choice Scarfed Heracross, Deoxys-A, and Tyranitar, all of which can pose a big problem to Mewtwo.
Darkrai resists two of Mewtwo´s weaknesses and can put Mewtwo´s counter to sleep with Dark Void, incapacitating them for the remainder of the game.
Other OptionsFlamethrower- Can be used on any of Mewtwo´s offensive sets in order to hit Mewtwo´s greatest counters: Metagross, Scizor, and Genosect
Thunder Wave- An interesting support option, and is rarely seen on Mewtwo. No Pokemon likes to be Paralyzed, especially in the Ubers environment.
Amnesia- Can be used in order to increase Mewtwo´s bulk, but there are better options.
Grass Knot- An option, but it has terrible type coverage in Ubers, as it only hits two pokemon: Groudon and Kyogre. Better moves can be used.
Usual CountersIf Mewtwo lacks Flamethrower, Metagross and Scizor makes Mewtwo´s life absolutely miserable. Both of these Pokemon are resistant to Psycho Break, can survive a boosted Aura Sphere, and KO with U-turn/Meteor Mash. Scizor can also Pursuit Mewtwo if it wants to switch. Scarfed Genosect can survive Aura Sphere and Psycho Break and can KO Mewtwo if Genosect gets the Special Attack boost with Bug Buzz. Giratina-O can 2HKO Mewtwo with Shadow Sneak. Arceus can also pick Mewtwo off with Extremespeed.
Faster Pokemon can really put a dent in Mewtwo. Deoxys A and N can threaten Mewtwo if Mewtwo hasn´t gotten too many Calm Minds up. Chocie Scarfed Pokemon can easily take Mewtwo out. Scarfed Zekrom and Garchomp are the best choices for this, as neither of them care about Special Defense boosts.
If Lugia is at full health and has the ability Multiscale, then it can easily come in on Mewtwo, take any attack, and just Whirlwind it away. Lugia has to watch out for the Taunt sets though. Groudon can also come in on Mewtwo and KO or phase it away with Dragon Tail if Mewtwo lacks Ice Beam.
Mewtwo is easier to revenge kill, but with the right prediction and moves, Mewtwo can actually beat all of these counters. Mewtwo is absolutely frightening.
OpinionMewtwo is arguably the most dangerous Pokemon in the Metagame. With Psycho Break, Mewtwo can´t truely be walled, as it can hit Pokemon both Physically and Specially. Mewtwo was good before, but now it´s truly a monster.
