This article gives you ideas of how to use Flygon in battle in the Pokémon Black, Pokémon White and Pokemon B2W2 Games. It lists popular movesets used by competitive battlers, as well as a description on how to use each set to help you understand why the moves were chosen. These popular sets are usually the best to use in battle and so reading this guide will help you in your team building.

Gen 4: Overview

Flygon is most used in offensive teams and maybe stall if using the set Toxic stall, which is very rare.

1 Sets have Experimental/Statistics Data, which includes detailed information and calculations on countering threats you may encounter!

Ability Nature Item HP Atk. Def. SpAtk. SpDef. Speed
Levitate Jolly / Adamant choice scarf 4 252 0 0 0 252
- Scarf Flygon
Ability: Levitate
Item: Choice Scarf
Moves: Outrage / Earthquake / U-turn / Stone Edge / Thunderpunch / Fire Blast

Experiment #1 (Speed)

Flygon´s minimum Speed is 236 (354 w/ Choice Scarf). Max Speed w/o Speed nature is 299 (448 w/ Choice Scarf). Max Speed is 328 (492 w/ Choice Scarf).

Pokemon that Flygon can out speed with 492 and NOT 448:
- Scarf Jirachi, +1 DD Salamence (Speed Tie)
- Ludicolo in Rain (w/ 479)

Pokemon that Flygon can out speed with 448 and NOT 354:
- Scarf Rotom-A (w/ 448)
- +1 dD Jolly Gyarados (w/ 431)
- Agility Empoleon (w/ 429)
- +1 DD Dragonite, Scarf Togekiss (w/ 427)
- Agility Metagross (w/ 419)
- Scarf Heatran (w/ 418)

From the above statistics we can see that the only reason for Flygon to be Jolly over Adamant would be to Speed tie against a Choice Scarf Jirachi or out speed Salamence after DD.

Experiment #2 (Attack)

Jolly Max Atk EVs
- Earthquake 74.3% - 87.7% to DD Tyranitar
- Outrage 81.2% - 96.4% to Physically Bulky Salamence
- Thunderpunch 80% - 95.1% to Bulky Gyarados
- Stone Edge 53.5% - 63.2% to Bulky Gyarados
- Outrage 41.4% - 48.7% to RestTalk Rotom-A
- Outrage 94.3% - 111.5% to standard Gengar
- Earthquake 59.9% - 70.9% to Metagross
- Earthquake 50.5% - 59.4% to CM Wish Jirachi
- Outrage 71.4% - 84.7% to LO Starmie
- Outrage 41.6% - 48.9% to Bold Blissey
- Fire Blast 51.5% - 61.1% to Spiker Skarmory

=======================

From the statistics above we can conclude the following spreads to be ideal for Choice Scarf Flygon:

#1 Flygon @ Choice Scarf + Jolly/Adamant + 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Speed

======================

Scarf Flygon is a revenge killer, with Outrage and EQ as two primary STAB moves, but moves are resisted by skarmory and bronzong thats what fire fang is for, stone edge is for the +1 gyarados thats ready to sweep your team. Fire Fang is 3HKO on skarmory but i suggest you switch before it sets up entry hazards. Thunder fang for gyarados. While u-turn is for scouting the opponents team.

Flygon are some of the best sweepers/ revenge killers around. Outrage and Earthquake are two of the most awesome STABs to have in the metagame, while Fire Blast hits Skarmory and Forretress. Thunder Punch hits down +1 Gyara, who you outspeed with Scarf, but U–Turn allows for gets Hit and Run. This is Flygon´s most basic set, is one of the most simple sets and yet one of the most brilliant sets ever. Do not use a Special attack hindering Nature if you want to run Fire Blast instead of Fire Fang, or it will be weakened severly.

Banded Flygon acts like Scarf Flygon but more as a late-game sweeper instead of a revenge killer. Outrage breaks through stall and dragon claw is for non-confusion STAB move. Without Fire Fang Skarmory can easily counter this set.

Toxic Stall´s purpose is to stall the opponent with roost while they take damage from toxic, and occasionnaly Earthquake for damage. Dragon Claw is for those dragons to switch in on Flygon after they realize that Flygon has no scarf. Fire Blast is there Skarmory and Forrestress. Flygon has good resistances and immunities, making him able to take alot of attacks thrown at him while stalling the opponent out.

Fire Blast hits so hard with a Life Orb, with a 100% chance of 2HKOing 252 min Special Defence Metagross and Skarmory. Draco Meteor can severely damage Bulky Salamence and anything with Intimidate or Will–O–Wisp. Draco Meteor 2HKOs Max HP, Max Spdef Rotom appliances, which are incredibly bulky, proving how good this set is. Roost allows for healing off LO recoil and Earthquake serves as the basic STAB.

This set hits for the surprise factor. Specs Flygon beats down most of Flygon´s switches with Special Attacks, and beats them down with a flawless Fire/Ground/Dragon combo, with Hidden Power Grass for dealing with Swampert, or Hidden Power Electric to deal with Gyarados. U–Turn serves as a good hit and run.

Surprise is the fundamental element to success when battling other well trained opponents.

Flygon is known to cause a lot of switches, and you should take advantage of that, by setting up of course. Having a Spikes Skarmory on your team allows for Flygon to be a backup to a Spikes death match!

Sunny Day is amazing with Flygon, as Flygon doesn´t mind a random Fire attack since it resists them so well. Flygon´s Speed can give you an advantage for sweeping, and Sunny Day can boost Fire Punch to high levels, and allow instant hits for Solar Beam.

Most Used Set

The most used is the scarf set, with access to uturn and STAB moves like Outrage and EQ, it can be a revenge killer and a scouter, but sometimes the banded set is used.

Other Options

Flygon´s resistances and immunities gives him advantages, with decent stats and move pool, it can use specs and band effectively.

Flygon can pack a Toxic Stalling set, and is capable of using the usually shunned move: Fly. However, with Flygon´s bulkyness, a STAB Earthquake and decent speed, it is a good Pokemon to use. Stone Edge can hit Gyarados and Salamence, but Thunder Punch and STAB Outrage can also deal serious damage. Screech can help Phaze, and if the opponent stays in, they then have to face a STAB Earthquake or Outrage. Yache Berry can be used to fool players into thinking that it is a Choice Pokemon, and can hinder Ice attacks.

Usual Counters

Hippodown is a good counter with good defense and HP, it can take most of Flygons attacks other than gigadrain which isn´t commonly seen, but Hippowdown must have ice fang to scare it away but roar is another option. Mamoswine is the best counter. With access to Ice Shard it can OHKO flygon easily. Swampert is a counter with ice punch/beam and Roar, while Flygon switches or attack and swampert can take all of flygons attacks (max damage is 75%).

Flygon doesn´t have too many counters, but Skarmory can come in on Outrage or Earthquake and set up Spikes, but must watch out for Fire Blast or Special sets. Bronzong can hurt with STAB Gyro Balls and can come in on Flygon´s attacks. Cresselia isn´t 2hko´d by Outrage, and can Ice Beam Flygon down. Porygon-2 is amazing against Flygon, being immune to Eathquake when switching in and it isn´t Ko´d by Outrage, while it can Recover Stall Flygon. Mawile can come in on Outrages and threaten with Ice Punch. Revenge Killers like Mamoswine and Weavile can Ice Shard Flygon into oblivion, and so can CB Donphan.

Opinion

For scarf Flygon, scarf Starmie or Scarf Latias are always good choices. As for banded Flygon, basically any dragons that are faster and Starmie and others with super effective moves.

Flygon are known as The Lesser Garchomp, but luckily Flygon´s Movepool allows it to learn Thunder Punch, a move that can hit Gyarados for Super Effective Damage. Flygon´s most common set is the choice set, but there are other sets that can be viable and suprising.
