Navigate Generation ⇓

This article gives you ideas of how to use Bronzong in battle in the Pokémon Black, Pokémon White and Pokemon B2W2 Games. It lists popular movesets used by competitive battlers, as well as a description on how to use each set to help you understand why the moves were chosen. These popular sets are usually the best to use in battle and so reading this guide will help you in your team building.

Gen 4: Overview

Usually, Bronzong will be found defensive teams. Its presence on such teams is caused by its ability to set up Stealth Rock and Sleep a Pokémon.

1 Sets have Experimental/Statistics Data, which includes detailed information and calculations on countering threats you may encounter!

Ability Nature Item HP Atk. Def. SpAtk. SpDef. Speed
Levitate / Heatproof Relaxed leftovers / lum berry 252 / 200 116 / 132 20 / 4 none 120 / 172 none
- Lead/Supporter
Ability: Levitate
Item: Leftovers / Lum Berry
Moves: Stealth Rock / Gyro Ball / Earthquake / Explosion / Hypnosis

Experiment # 1 (Speed)

Bronzong needs to maximize the power of its Gyro Ball so we´ll give it 0 EVs in Speed and 0 IVs in Speed.

Experiment #2 (Defenses)

- Needs 252 HP and 104 Def EVs in order to take two Dynamic Punches from Lead Machamp.
- Needs 252 HP and 12 SpDef EVs with Sassy Nature to survive two Shadow Balls from LO Gengar after SR damage.
- Needs 252 HP and 72 SpDef EVs with Sassy Nature to survive two LO Hydro Pumps from Starmie.
- Needs 252 HP and 88 SpDef EVs with Sassy Nature to survive two LO Thunderbolts from Jolteon after SR damage.

From the above statistics we can see that Bronzong needs 252 HP EVs with 104 Defs and 88 SpDef EVs along with Sassy Nature. This leaves 64 EVs in Atk. Lets see if that is enough.

Experiment #3 (Attack)

64 EV Atk
- Gyro Ball will always 2HKO DD/Mix Salamences w/o Intimidate.
- 70% chance of OHKO on standard Heatrans after SR damage with Earthquake.
- 100% OHKO on Bulky Gyarados with Explosion w/o Intimidate.
- 78.5% chance oh OHKO on standard Gengars after SR damage with Gyro Ball, 100% OHKO after Gengar loses HP with LO damage.
- 100% OHKO on Bold Blissey after SR damage.

=======================

From the statistics above we can conclude the following spreads to be ideal for Lead/Supporter Bronzong:

#1 Bronzong @ Leftovers/Lum Berry + Sassy + 252 HP / 64 Atk / 104 Def / 88 SpDef

======================

This set presents status, Stealth Rock, and fairly good type coverage. Levitate or Heatproof depends on personal preference. Not many people expect Heatproof Bronzong with Earthquake, which allows it to take out opposing Heatran leads. The second EV spread is better suited as a surprise counter to Infernape, Heatran, and other Pokmon like Jolteon or Raikou who think they can set up. The ability to take a status move such as Hypnosis on the first turn from Gengar and Gyro Ball it back can put you at an advantage.

This set, like any other Bronzong set, should obviously be used as a lead. Sleep an opponent, then set up Dual Screens that will help your teammates survive more hits. Stealth Rock is for further team support, but Explosion can be used if you want to get rid of a potential threat to your team. Oddly enough, 128 / 128 EVs spread the Defenses quite evenly (with the Nature determining what takes priority).

This is obviously meant to be used alongside Trick Room teams, as Bronzongs sluggishness and Explosion aid it to become a true supporting member for Trick Room teams. You start the match by Trick Rooming, then proceed by Exploding (youll usually kill a Pokmon when you use Explosion). After that, bring in your slow Pokmon (which becomes fast under Trick Room) and start sweeping!

Earthquake takes care of Heatran and Infernape that think they can switch-in easily, while Gyro Ball takes care of faster opponents such as Gengar and Weavile.

Bronzong lacks a reliable recovery move, so it has to resort to using Rest. Gyro Ball and Earthquake are powerful options that deal with a lot of Bronzongs counters and other threatening Pokmon. With this set, not only does killing Bronzong become a near impossible task, but you also get a lot more chances at countering a Pokmon that might harm your team, as you can finally recover your health.

Not very common, but Calm Mind Bronzong can work. Put a Pokmon to Sleep and start statting up with Calm Mind. You can replace one of the two attacking moves with either Grass Knot or Hidden Power Ground, as the former gives you a quicker way of dealing with Swampert that might Roar out your boosts, while the latter can aid you against Heatran. However, Shadow Ball and Psychic get excellent coverage together. Although, if youre running that combanation, then be careful of the ever so common Steel-types.

The Bronzong that generally starts Rain Dance / Sunny Day teams. The general idea here is to Hypnosis and set up the appropriate weather. Then, you Stealth Rock or put up a Screen. Afterwards, use Explosion and sweep with one of your teammates.

Ability Nature Item HP Atk. Def. SpAtk. SpDef. Speed
Levitate Sassy / Relaxed choice band / macho brace 252 / 200 116 / 132 20 / 4 none 120 / 172 none

This set is designed to cripple one Pokmon from your opponents team. That could be achieved by Tricking your opponents Pokmon the appropriate Item. Macho Brace not only makes Gyro Ball much more powerful, but it can also be Tricked on a fast sweeper such as Infernape. If Choice Band is Tricked on an opponents wall, they will be incapable of countering your sweepers efficiently. Choice Band can also raise the damage that will be produced from the 3 Physical moves listed above.

Most Used Set

The lead Bronzong set is the most “Standard” set run on Bronzong. The reason behind its high amount of usage is because its ability to set up Stealth Rock greatly aids your team. This is because Stealth Rock will weaken the opponents Pokémon allowing you to gain the advantage with one of your sweepers.

Other Options

Toxic might be an interesting option on Bronzong, alongside Hypnosis, but its generally a gimmicky option and it might prove to be ineffective.

Usual Counters

Bronzong is very difficult to OHKO even with the strongest of STAB super effective moves. Although, Suicune can wall Bronzong pretty well since an Explosion from Bronzong wont OHKO Suicune and Hypnosis wont really do much to Sleep Talking Suicune variants. Heracross and Lucario are good choices for getting rid of Bronzong because after a Swords Dance a Life Orb Lucario can OHKO Bronzong with Close Combat, and Choice Band max Attack Heracross easily OHKOs Bronzong with either Close Combat or Megahorn. Heatran can wall Bronzong if Bronzong doesnt run Heatproof as its ability or runs Earthquake in one of its move slots. Tyranitar can do an OK job at countering Bronzong as it 2HKOs with Choice Band boosted Crunch or can set up with Dragon Dance.

Opinion

Bronzong…the ultimate wall of the Over Used environment. Not only does it have a unique type combination shared only by a few Over Used Pokémon (Metagross and Jirachi for the most part), but it also has 2 amazing Abilities. One negates one of its only 2 weaknesses and the other does the same, this thing is just amazing isnt it?!
